Boca West Country Club and our
luncheon committee, which consists
of Barbara D. Cohen, Edmund
Nasralla, Mary Watts and Sharon
Pearthree, outdid themselves with
our 51st Anniversary Luncheon
“Tropical Paradise.”
The decorations were superlative, the
food was delicious, Edmund Nasralla
was a stand out as emcee of the
event and our models – Aimee Yahn-
Carmichael, Sally Brisker, Bernice
Weisman, Eva Friedel, Phoebe Chu
and Barbara D. Cohen – were lovely.
Pat Thomas hosted the fashion
show with flair, as a dashing Brian
Altschuler escorted the lovely models
and helped announce the raffles.
Beautiful clothes from the Debbie-
Rand Thrift Shoppe were just a small
sampling of what can be found in the
Shoppe itself. The event culminated
with Eva Friedel, a radiation/oncology
volunteer at the Sandler Pavilion,
winning the $1,000 raffle drawing.
Special thanks to everyone for
making the luncheon a success and
we look forward to seeing you and
your guests at our 52nd Anniversary
Luncheon next year!
September Volunteer of the Month
LOUIS AZUS
Since joining Debbie-Rand in
February 1999, Louis Azus has
earned almost 1,900 hours as
a Life Member. Currently, he
volunteers at The Center for
Hematology-Oncology (CHO).
Louis and his wife, Esther, are originally from
New York. At age 50, Louis resumed his college
career at Adelphia University and graduated
with a Bachelor of Science in business and
communications. This was while successfully
running his business as a Licensed Public
Insurance Property Adjuster. Now retired, Louis
is becoming a Volunteer Certified Emergency
Response Team member. In his spare time, he
enjoys playing golf.
Thank you, Louis, for your dedicated volunteer
service for Boca Regional. The CHO staff would
like to clone you, as you are fantastic with the
patients and a pleasure to have in the office.
Administrative Update
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I join Boca Raton Regional
Hospital as the Chief Compliance Officer. From the inception it has been
clear to me that this Hospital is a very special place where administrators,
employees, physicians, volunteers and members of the community are
committed to making this the finest regional medical center possible, with
a focus on compassion and quality care. I am pleased that I will be able
to add value to this team by sharing my experience and equal passion for
healthcare and the area that we serve.
Prior to joining Boca Regional, I spent nearly five years at a Baltimore,
Maryland hospital – MedStar Union Memorial – building the foundation for
a strong culture of compliance as their Director of Compliance and Privacy.
My other professional experience includes numerous years as a Corporate
Privacy Officer, and roles as a Health Information Management Director in
acute and long-term care. Through my years, I have learned that people
are the driving force for excellence in any healthcare organization. The buildings are simply brick and
mortar, but it is the people that make a difference.
My educational background includes an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology,
Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership, and a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership. In
addition to graduating Summa Cum Laude I have achieved credentials as a Registered Health Information
Technologist, Certified in Healthcare Privacy and most recently have passed my Board of Governors
exam to be soon deemed a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).
I am affiliated with various professional organizations including the Healthcare Compliance Association,
American Health Information Management Association and the American College of Healthcare
Executives. I enjoy my participation in these professional organizations as they allow me to stay current
with the ever changing landscape of the healthcare regulatory environment.
In closing, I appreciate the warm welcome I have received from everyone here at Boca Regional. My
primary goal is to contribute to our philosophy of One Team. One Mission. We all bear a responsibility
for always doing the right thing on behalf of our patients and the community. As your Chief Compliance
Officer I thank you for sharing in that responsibility and welcome you to contact me at anytime should
you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mary Matthews-Martin, MSN, RN, NEA-BC
Mandatory Flu Shots
Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s policy states that flu shots are mandatory
for all Hospital employees and volunteers. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention recommends annual influenza vaccination for
all individuals six months of age and older and mandatory healthcare
worker vaccination is endorsed by several national medical societies.
Volunteers who are unable to get a flu shot for religious or medical
reasons must complete an exemption form, which can be obtained in
the Volunteer Office. All volunteers must provide proof of receiving
a flu shot no earlier than August 2013 or complete an exemption
form. Volunteers who work in patient care areas and are granted an
exemption will be required to wear a mask while performing their
duties throughout the entire flu season (December 1 through March 31).
All volunteers must submit to the Volunteer Office proof of receiving a
current flu shot or a signed exemption form no later than December 1.
Upon submitting proof of receiving the flu shot, volunteers will have a
designation sticker affixed to their Hospital ID badge.
FLU FACTS:
1. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day
before symptoms develop and up to five to seven days after
becoming sick.
2. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against three to four influenza
viruses that research suggests will be the most common each year.
Protection develops approximately two weeks after vaccination.
3. Flu vaccines will not protect against flu-like illnesses caused by noninfluenza
viruses.
Our Shining Stars
Marion Pedalino, volunteer in the
D-RMSL Thrift Shoppe, made a
beautiful cake for all of her fellow
volunteers to enjoy.
Do you know of or have you
witnessed a volunteer going
above and beyond to help a
patient? Or maybe someone is
simply deserving of recognition
for displaying an exceptional
level of volunteerism? If so, let
us know and we will feature
them in an upcoming issue.
Safety Matters: Volunteer Trivia
D-RMSL is committed to ensuring our volunteers have
the knowledge needed to keep themselves and our
patients safe. As part of this commitment, we provide
a monthly safety question in this newsletter. These
questions represent what a volunteer may be asked
by The Joint Commission surveyor during a site visit.
Congrats to Nona Goldstein, who correctly answered,
“1) False. Volunteers may not lift/move patients into or
out of wheelchairs. 2) True. When transporting a patient
to their room, you must immediately notify the staff of
the patient’s arrival and not leave them unattended.”
See Aimee Yahn-Carmichael for your prize!
561.955.4100
This month’s trivia question is fill-in-the-blank. All of our
volunteers are expected to adhere to the Standards
of Communication, which are specific behaviors, use
of key words and attention to body language and
non-verbal behaviors. This means when you answer
a phone, you should say good morning/afternoon/
evening and state your _______ and your _______ and
ask how you may help them. At the conclusion of all
customer contacts, you should ask _______. The first
person to email Aimee at ayahn-carmichael@brrh.com,
will win a pair of Regal VIP Movie Tickets. Best of luck!
