We opened the doors with our
Chairman Emeritus Ruth McGoldrick
and Countess Henrietta de Hoernle
cutting the ribbon. We honored Ruth
for her time of over 40,000 hours of
service and dedication to the Thrift
Shoppe and the incredible amount
of money that she helped raise over
the years. Countess de Hoernle was
also thanked for her support in the
original funding and pledge to help
purchase the Shoppe.
The Thrift Shoppe has taken on a new
look and we celebrated with a grand
reopening on Friday, November 2 for
employees and volunteers to be the
first to shop in the new atmosphere.
We continue to have quality
merchandise with extraordinary
values that help raise funds that
go directly to the Hospital. We are
so lucky to have such wonderful
donors and patrons who continue to
support the Thrift Shoppe and have
helped to raise more than $450,000
annually. The Thrift Shoppe is now
able to offer payroll deductions for
our employees for their purchases.
Be sure to come visit the Shoppe,
as you will be amazed at how
wonderful it is and what great items
you can find at affordable prices.
October Volunteer of the Month
Ellen Manes
Ellen was selected as the
October Volunteer of the
Month after receiving high
praise for her work assisting
Gift Shop Manager, Lois
Ackner. Ellen, who also holds
a full-time position at Whole
Foods as a Produce Graphic Artist, began
volunteering for D-RMSL in March 2009 and has
earned over 870 hours of service.
After graduating from Goucher College in
Towson, Maryland, Ellen worked for 20 years at
Medquist, before deciding she wanted a career
change and went on to earn a Master of Fine
Arts degree at Digital Media Arts College in
Boca Raton and joined Whole Foods.
Ellen has a long history of volunteering, starting
as a teenager and spending a total of eight years
at Akron, Ohio’s Children’s Hospital and another
hospital in the Akron area. Ellen’s mother, Evelyne
Manes, is a former D-RMSL volunteer.
Thank you Ellen for all you do for D-RMSL and
Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
Letter from the President
2013, it’s hard to believe it is here already. I would like to welcome you all
into the new year with good health! Over the last year, we have seen many
changes throughout the League and the Hospital. We must accept them
and learn to adapt to these new beginnings. Our biggest changes are the
new look in the Thrift Shoppe, the new computer program system for our
volunteer software, and of course, the mandatory flu vaccinations.
I am so amazed every day by how many volunteers we have who
continue to give their time and ask if there is another day they may be
needed. You truly are a pleasure to work with and I commend you on
your loyalty, but most of all, your compassion and desire to give to our
patients the gift of your time. We have recently had our survey from the
Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation and we passed with great
accolades. This of course could not have been done without the help of all of you as volunteers along
with our employees. We are One Team. One Mission.
Thank you again for your donation of time and talent and for all that you do for Debbie-Rand and Boca
Raton Regional Hospital. I am proud to represent such an incredible group of people, and all of you make
my job a pleasure.
Once again, have a happy and healthy 2013!
Debbie Leising, President
Gift Shop Open House
(HELP)
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Hospital Elder Life Program
(HELP) is an innovative model
program designed to improve
the hospital experience of older
patients.
As always, the Gift Shop Open House was a rousing success. The
festivities were enjoyed by all who could attend and the joint was
jumpin’. To ensure nobody missed out, we extended the discounts
right through the holidays! The Gift Shop continued to have raffles and
occasional surprises right up until Santa came. Stop by and visit our
own little “winter wonderland” right here in Boca Raton.
TAV Scholarship Program
It’s now that time of year when Debbie-Rand TAVs need to start
preparing for the scholarship application process. Thanks to the
generosity of longtime friend, benefactor and Boca Raton resident
Lucille Barton, scholarships are available to our deserving teenage
volunteers. Although Lucille passed away in 2003, she has continued
her legacy of giving to Debbie-Rand through her charitable foundation
with the Lucille Barton/Debbie-Rand scholarship program, which she
started in 2000. We are so fortunate to have people like Mrs. Barton
who give back to our community even after they are gone.
The Lucille Barton Foundation has made it possible to fund scholarships
to those TAVs who have given 200 or more hours of service to our
organization, have a financial need, and have shown exemplary service
to Debbie-Rand and Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
Over the past 10 years alone, the League will have given more than
$200,000 in scholarships to our TAVs who seek advanced education
beyond high school. For more information or for an application,
please contact the volunteer office. Look for additional information in
the February issue of this newsletter as well.
Hospitalization can be a
pivotal point in the life of an
older person. All too often,
hospitalized older patients
experience decline in their
physical and mental abilities,
which makes it difficult for them
to fully recover from their illness
and to regain their previous
ability to function.
For some patients, this means
going to a nursing home after
leaving the hospital instead of
returning home. The Hospital
Elder Life Program was
developed to prevent these
problems. This program gives
the volunteer a level of patient
contact and responsibility that
is unique amongst hospital
programs.
Debbie-Rand is interviewing
volunteers to help get this
project underway. If you are
interested in becoming a
volunteer in this special program
and would like more information
please contact Aimee at
561.955.3463 or by email at
ayahn-carmichael@brrh.com
There will be special training
and orientation for this project
and it does require a special
commitment so please consider
this when applying for the
interview.
Using the New Sign-in System
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION CENTER (VIC TOUCH)
Change can be challenging, but it can also be exciting and fun! Volunteer Information
Center (VIC Touch), the new sign-in software for volunteers, is exciting and fun, I promise
you. Also VIC Touch is the most complete volunteer software available in today’s market.
Most of us volunteers only need to know how to sign-in and sign-out on VIC Touch. We
sign-in and sign-out by touching the correct item(s) on each screen. Before we describe
each screen, let’s explain the “touch” method that works best:
• Use only one fingertip to touch the screen. Do not use fingernails or other objects.
If one fingertip does not get a positive response, then use two fingertips, one-quarter
inch apart, touching both at the same time.
• Touch gently and firmly, just hard enough for the touch to register, but not so hard that the screen moves.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE WHEN YOU SIGN IN:
• The first screen asks you to input (touch) your volunteer ID number and then touch “Cancel,” “Backspace” or
“Continue.” If your ID number is correct on the screen, touch “Continue.”
• The second screen asks you if the name on the screen is yours. If the name is yours, touch “Yes.” If the name
is not correct, touch “No.” If you touch “No,” you will return to the first screen, again asking for your correct
volunteer ID number.
• The third screen asks you to touch “Sign-in,” “View my schedule,” “View my service” or “Exit.” For a routine
sign-in, touch “Sign-in.”
• The fourth screen asks you “Which assignment are you here to perform?” You may touch the correct
assignment or touch “Not sure” or “Cancel.”
• The fifth screen asks you “Is this information correct?” If the information is correct, please touch “Yes.”
• The last screen says “Thank you.” Please touch “Ok” and your sign-in is complete.
When you finish your shift, you will return to the Volunteer Office to sign out:
• The first screen asks you to touch your volunteer ID number and then touch “Cancel,” “Backspace,” or
“Continue.” See your correct number and you touch “Continue.”
• The second screen asks you if the name on the screen is yours. If the name is yours, touch “Yes.” If the name
is not correct, touch “No.” If you touch “Yes,” you go on to the third screen. If you touch “No,” you return to
the first screen asking for your correct , volunteer ID number.
• The third screen asks you what you want to do, and “Sign out” is the first option. Touch “Sign out” and you will
proceed to the next screen.
• The last screen says “Thank you.” Please touch “Ok” and your sign-out is complete.
This new software will allow the Volunteer Office to easily send out pertinent information to volunteers via e-mail.
Therefore, please check your e-mail on a regular basis. If you have not yet given your e-mail address to the Volunteer
Office, please do so as soon as possible.
Board Members Attend
AFHAV Annual Meeting
The first week in October, our Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League
President, Debbie Leising, Recording Secretary Evie Zimmerman
and Trustee Marci Nowak attended the 59th Annual Meeting of
the Association of Florida Healthcare Auxiliary Volunteers (AFHAV)
in Orlando, Florida. The AFHAV has 101 member hospitals. This
year, 260 representatives from 58 hospitals attended the annual
educational conference.
The theme of this year’s conference, “Volunteers…Giving the
Priceless Gift of Time,” included 16 sessions on topics of mutual
interest to volunteer organizations, among them: Interviewing and
Orienting Volunteers, Getting the News in your Newsletter, Building
Patient Loyalty Through Service Excellence and Where are all the
Wheelchairs. Each session included a presentation on how other
auxiliaries are addressing mutual interests and concerns with time
devoted to questions and answers from the audience. At both the
opening and closing sessions, the keynote speakers focused on the
important role volunteers play in our hospitals delivering “service
excellence” to our patients and their families.
“We are
Looking for
... a Few Good
Writers.”
Do you enjoy writing? Do you have
the knack for turning a phrase?
Bring out the hidden writer in you.
Debbie-Rand is putting together a
group of volunteers who would like to
contribute articles to our newsletter,
the InnerView.
Here’s a chance to put your writing
experience or just plain love of
the written word to good use. Our
editorial committee will assign articles
on an as-needed basis a month or
two ahead of the deadline for each
issue. We also welcome new ideas for
articles you think would be of interest
to our readers.
If you’re interested in becoming
a member of our Contributor’s
List, please contact Aimee Yahn-
Carmichael, Director of Volunteer
Services, for an interview. Aimee can
be reached at 561.955.3463 or by
email at ayahn-carmichael@brrh.com.
The AFHAV is divided into five geographically based districts.
Each year, in addition to the state wide Annual Meeting, each
district holds an annual meeting and also mini-meetings with
representatives from hospitals in close proximity to the host
hospital, all for the purpose of sharing information, experience and
best practices on topics of mutual interest. Debbie-Rand Memorial
Service League is a member of the South District, which stretches
from the Florida Keys north through Martin County. D-RMSL has
hosted both district meetings and mini-meetings.
Membership in the AFHAV provides the Debbie-Rand Memorial
Service League with opportunities to learn by sharing practices with
other healthcare organizations and allows our Auxiliary to share our
experience and good practices.
The AFHAV reinforces the reputation that Boca Raton Regional
Hospital is at the forefront of Florida healthcare organizations.
Safety Matters: Volunteer Trivia
The Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League is
committed to ensuring our volunteers have the
knowledge needed to keep themselves and our
patients safe. As part of this commitment, we
will provide a monthly safety question in this
newsletter. These questions represent what a
volunteer may be asked by The Joint Commission
surveyor during a site visit.
Congratulations Jason Lee, who correctly
answered, “Two 2012 Hospital National Patient
Safety Goals are: Identifying Patients Correctly
and Infection Prevention.”
561.955.4100
This month’s trivia is a multiple choice question. All
volunteers must use Standards of Communication
when visiting a patient’s room. This means that
when you enter a patient’s room you should:
A) State your name B) State what department
you are from C) State why you are there D) All
of the above. The first person to email Aimee
at ayahn-carmichael@brrh.com, will win a pair of
Regal VIP Movie Tickets. Best of luck!
