Summer’s Here!
The Temperature is Rising ....
And so is the Need for Volunteers.
With summer here we can expect the usual
… hotter days, hurricane preparedness and
the need for volunteers! With many of our
snowbird colleagues now back up north
during the “off season,” coupled with
the many activities and events we all have
during the spring and summer, our Hospital
experiences a downturn in both the numbers
of volunteers we have and the number of
hours provided. Despite being in a region
that experiences seasonal fluctuation in
the population, we’re now seeing greater
patient volumes. The need for the valuable
services our volunteers provide remains high.
Please consider volunteering an extra shift.
If possible, consider an extra day or two. Talk
to your friends about the great experience of
being a Debbie-Rander and get them to join
us. We thank you for your help.
Administrative Update
It has been my privilege to have served as Executive Director of Facilities
and Bio-Med Services at Boca Raton Regional Hospital since January 17,
2011. During that time, I have come to appreciate the growing vitality of the
institution and have immersed myself in a number of exciting projects that are
transforming our campus and its capabilities.
I oversee 48 professionals including engineering, maintenance, safety/security
and bio-medical staff. I am responsible for ensuring that our facility’s structures
and equipment are all working effectively and that we are in compliance with
the many regulatory requirements of the healthcare industry. I also play a major
role in any new construction or renovation on campus.
I came to Boca Regional after serving as Deputy Director of Finance, Administration and Operations at
the Florida International University – University Museum. Prior to that position I held the post of Director
of Facilities at the University of South Alabama Medical Center.
I received an undergraduate degree in education from Eastern Illinois University and my Bachelor of
Science degree in engineering from the University of Illinois. I also hold an Executive Master of Business
Administration degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
I am extremely fortunate to be working at an institution with such significant transformational changes
to its facilities on the horizon. We are about to embark on creating a new Women’s Institute and Center
for Emergency Medicine. The majority of my peers would be fortunate to have just one project of that
magnitude during their tenure at a hospital. I will have the pleasure of being simultaneously involved in
two initiatives that will not only change the landscape of our campus, but also improve the way we deliver
care in two of our most iconic programs.
In addition to the marvelous philanthropic support Boca Regional receives, I, like all my senior team
colleagues, remain amazed at the level of volunteerism that is so pervasive at the Hospital. It is just
another reason that I am so happy to be working here. On behalf of everyone in Facilities I thank you for
all that you do for Boca Regional.
Sincerely,
Jeanne Brace, Executive Director
Facilities and Bio-Med Services
Boca Raton Regional Hospital
Names Volunteer of the Month
For the past year, we have interviewed and written about the
extraordinary work that volunteers are doing throughout the Hospital.
However, with this issue of “InnerView,” we will focus on the Volunteer
Office and the individuals who make this group so very special.
Everyone knows Aimee Yahn-Carmichael, director of the Debbie-
Rand Memorial Service League volunteers. She sees to every detail
that involves over 700 volunteers and ensures that the office staff runs
smoothly. What a superb job she does. Dotti Dufresne, who has a
perpetual smile, became the first employee in the office in 2001. Dotti
assists Aimee, Debbie Leising and the volunteer secretaries with the
responsibilities that come along with this job.
In addition, there is the board of directors with Debbie Leising serving
as president. They set policy, coordinate all the fundraising activities
and supervise all the special events and projects, which includes the
Annual Volunteer Luncheon. Behind the scenes are numerous projects
in various stages of development, such as the recruiting and training of
all new volunteers. The office staff makes sure that all departments are
properly staffed and when a volunteer calls in sick they see to it that a
replacement is found. Coordination of all activities is what makes the
volunteer effort at Boca Raton Regional Hospital the very best.
The board makes certain that compliance with OSHA and HIPAA
laws are strictly observed. That includes federal, state and local laws
dealing with healthcare requirements. Leadership within the office
makes sure that all the volunteers who are assisting alongside our
great professional staff are committed to a team effort that brings
about excellent results for all patients and visitors at our Hospital.
The following is a listing of the volunteers who staff the office
throughout the week. Mary Mildner chairs in the training of the office
staff. Those listed with (S.P.) alongside their names are involved with
Special Projects.
Sunday: Bonnie Johrendt
Monday: Evie Zimmerman, Rosa Bonorandi, Mary DeOliveria – S.P.
Tuesday: Mary Mildner, Mildred Strom, Nicole Abitol – S.P.
Wednesday: Joan Gridley, Gail Crossman, Tony Tsagris – S.P.
Thursday: Lynn Wilkinson, Eileen Carlins, Diane Morse – S.P.
Friday: Barbara Gideon, Mary Watts, Tony Tsagris – S.P.
donation from Elaine J. Wold and
the entire Keith C. Wold, MD family
to name the Wold Family Center for
Emergency Medicine at Boca Raton
Regional Hospital.
In announcing the gift, Mrs. Wold
said, “My family and I realize that all
with an emergency. It is critical that
patients and their families receive
the most efficient, comfortable, and
compassionate medical care during
these difficult situations.”
utilized to transform our existing
Emergency Department into the
Center for Emergency Medicine.
The state-of-the-art facility will
expedite emergency patient care in a
comfortable setting with an emphasis
on clinical excellence, efficiency and
privacy,” said Jan Savarick, president
June Volunteer of the Month
Dorcas began her “volunteer career”
with D-RMSL and Boca Regional in July
1990 and has logged just under 8,000
hours. Her first assignment was at the
Information and Reception Desk in the
DORCAS EPPRIGHT lobby. In 1994, she began volunteering
in the Surgi-Center and is still there on
Thursday afternoons. In 2001, she served on the Auxiliary
Board of Trustees and conducted TAV orientations.
Dorcas and her late husband, George, was also a D-RMSL
volunteer with 2,000 hours of service, moved to Florida from
Philadelphia in 1983. She also volunteers in her St. Andrews
Estates community, as well as her church. Dorcas attended
Temple University and worked for the Philadelphia Evening
Bulletin in advertising sales. She also volunteered as a Docent
at the Franklin Institute Museum.
Dorcas’s son, William, is a Company Commander in the
United States Coast Guard, stationed at Cape May, New
Jersey, where he and his wife, Cathy, reside.
Dorcas does a wonderful job making the Surgi-Center
patients comfortable and easing the concerns of their
family and friends. Thank you, Dorcas, for your many years
of caring service to D-RMSL and the Hospital.
