Doug Straley was promoted to Ass<strong>is</strong>tant Athletic Director for Sports<br />

Medicine in August 2009, after serving as Manhattan's Director of<br />

Sports Medicine for the previous six years. Straley superv<strong>is</strong>es the<br />

athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for<br />

Manhattan’s 19 Div<strong>is</strong>ion I athletic teams.<br />

Prior to h<strong>is</strong> arrival in Riverdale, Straley served as the director of<br />

sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, NY. At<br />

Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and<br />

management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate NCAA<br />

Div<strong>is</strong>ion III student-athletes.<br />

Before h<strong>is</strong> tenure at Manhattanville, Straley worked for three<br />

years as the ass<strong>is</strong>tant director of sports medicine at Assumption<br />

College. He ass<strong>is</strong>ted with the medical care of the athletic program’s<br />

19 Div<strong>is</strong>ion II varsity sport teams.<br />

Straley, a 1998 graduate of Northeastern University, worked as<br />

a student athletic trainer during h<strong>is</strong> undergraduate years. In 1999,<br />

he received a master of science degree in athletic training from<br />

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.<br />

Additionally, Straley served as the head athletic trainer for the<br />

Westchester Wildfire, a United States Basketball League (USBL) team<br />

coached by former New York Knick John Starks.<br />

Straley had been publ<strong>is</strong>hed on numerous occasions, and has made<br />

several presentations based upon h<strong>is</strong> research in the field of Athletic<br />

Training.<br />

Straley holds Athletic Training licenses in New York, Massachusetts,<br />

and Georgia, and <strong>is</strong> a member of the National Athletic Trainers<br />

Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.<br />

He <strong>is</strong> certified as a Strength and Conditioning Special<strong>is</strong>t, as an<br />

Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and First Aid. A decorated Eagle Scout,<br />

Straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at Northeastern for<br />

outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional<br />

development.<br />

A native of Newton, Mass., Straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry,<br />

NY with h<strong>is</strong> wife Jennifer and their daughter Annabelle.<br />

Katie Leighton ’02 enters her third year as academic adv<strong>is</strong>or for<br />

the Manhattan College Athletic Department. Leighton manages<br />

the academic support for Manhattan’s 300+ student-athletes, a role<br />

which has helped the department rank among the nation’s best<br />

according to several NCAA measures of academic success. Leighton’s<br />

duties include ass<strong>is</strong>ting student-athletes in class scheduling, monitor<br />

their academic progress, oversee the Student-Athlete Adv<strong>is</strong>ory<br />

Committee (SAAC) and coordinate tutoring and other special needs.<br />

Prior <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> appointment, Leighton worked as Manhattan’s<br />

compliance coordinator for the 2006-07 academic year. In <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> role,<br />

she was responsible for monitoring and regulating NCAA eligibility<br />

rules.<br />

Leighton, an alumna of Manhattan, was a four year letterwinner<br />

and two-time team captain for the women’s soccer program. During<br />

her career, she was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team three<br />

consecutive years. She earned CoSIDA Academic All D<strong>is</strong>trict I Team<br />

honors twice, and was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America<br />

Second Team at the conclusion of her senior year. Leighton graduated<br />

with a bachelor’s degree in education in 2002, and earned a master’s<br />

degree of arts with a concentration in counseling in 2007.<br />

Following her undergraduate studies at Manhattan, Leighton<br />

worked as a second grade teacher at Harley Avenue Primary School<br />

in Elwood, N.Y. She returned to Manhattan in 2003 holding the roll<br />

of ass<strong>is</strong>tant compliance coordinator/ticket manager for two years.<br />

During the 2005-06 academic year, Leighton was the ass<strong>is</strong>tant director<br />

for student-athlete support services at Columbia University.<br />
