JAKE THIELMAN - Pitched two seasons for<br />

The Manhattan College baseball team has, the St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Cardinals (1905-06), two for<br />

through the years, produced some of the the Cleveland Naps (1907-08) and appeared<br />

most successful athletes that the school in one game for the Boston Red Sox (1908),<br />

has known. What follows <strong>is</strong> a l<strong>is</strong>t of former posting a 30-28 lifetime record, with a 3.16<br />

diamond dwellers that have made it to the ERA.<br />

PAT DUFF - Had one at-bat with the Washington<br />

Senators in the 1906 season.<br />

JOE GALLAGHER - Played during the 1939<br />

and 1940 seasons with the New York<br />

Yankees, St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Browns and Brooklyn<br />

Dodgers. An outfielder, Gallagher was best<br />

known as a long-ball threat off the bench.<br />

Hit 26 doubles, five triples and 16 homers<br />

while batting .273, with a slugging percentage<br />

of .446.<br />

TOM LOUGHRAN - Played for the New York<br />

Gothams in the 1884 season, appearing in<br />

nine games.<br />

BILL FINLEY - Played for the New York<br />

Giants in the 1886 season, appearing in 13<br />

games.<br />

JACK TAYLOR - Pitched nine seasons for the<br />

New York Giants (1), Philadelphia Phillies<br />

(6), St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Browns (1), and Cincinnati<br />

Reds (1) from 1891-1899. Posted a 120-117<br />

lifetime record, with a 4.23 ERA, including<br />

three straight 20-win seasons. Recorded a<br />

26-14 record with 33 complete games in the<br />

1895 season.<br />

PETE McBRIDE - Pitched for the Cleveland<br />

Spiders (1898) and the St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Perfectos<br />

(1899) for one season each, appearing in a<br />

total of 12 games.<br />

HENRY THIELMAN - Pitched for the New<br />

York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds in the<br />

1902 season, and the Brooklyn Superbas<br />

in the 1903 season. Won nine games in 25<br />

appearances for the Reds in 1902.<br />

LUIS CASTRO - Played the 1902 season for<br />

the Philadelphia Athletics as an infielder,<br />

posting a .245 average with 15 RBI over 43<br />

games. Was the first Latin American to play<br />

in the Major Leagues.<br />

DOC SCANLAN - Pitched eight seasons<br />

for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2), Brooklyn<br />

Superbas (5), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1)<br />

from 1903-1911, compiling a 65-71 record<br />

and a 3.00 ERA with 15 shutouts and five<br />

saves. H<strong>is</strong> best season was in 1906, when he<br />

posted an 18-13 record with a 3.19 ERA and<br />

six shutouts.<br />

CY FERRY - Pitched two seasons for the<br />

Detroit Tigers (1904) and Cleveland Naps<br />

(1905), appearing in four games<br />

JIM MULLIN - Split the 1904 season between<br />

the Philadelphia Athletics and the Washington<br />

Senators, and played the 1905 season<br />

with the Senators. Fin<strong>is</strong>hed h<strong>is</strong> career with<br />

a .197 average as an infielder, appearing in<br />

118 games.<br />

TOM O’HARA - Played the 1906-07 seasons<br />

for the St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Cardinals as an outfielder,<br />

posting a .252 batting average in 62 games.<br />

EDDIE ZIMMERMAN - Played the 1906<br />

season with the St. Lou<strong>is</strong> Cardinals and the<br />

1911 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers,<br />

both at third base. He appeared in 122 of<br />

h<strong>is</strong> 127 career games in 1911, batting .185<br />

with three homers and 36 RBI.<br />

COTTON MINAHAN - Pitched in two games<br />

for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1907 season.<br />

CHRIS MAHONEY - Pitched in one game for<br />

the Boston Red Sox in the 1910 season.<br />

GEORGE CHALMERS - Played seven seasons<br />

for the Philadelphia Phillies (1910-1916),<br />

posting a 29-41 record with a 3.41 ERA over<br />

121 games. Won a career-high 13 games in<br />

the 1911 season.<br />

DICK COTTER - Played 46 career games at<br />

catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (1911)<br />

and Chicago Cubs (1912), posting a .280<br />

career batting average.<br />

JIM HANLEY ‘10 - Pitched one<br />

game in the 1913 season for the<br />

New York Yankees.<br />

CHARLES MEARA ‘08 - Played<br />

four games for the New York<br />

Yankees in the 1914 season, batting .286<br />

over four games.<br />

JOHN “BUDDY” HASSETT ’33 - Played seven<br />

Major League seasons with the<br />

Brooklyn Dodgers (3), Boston<br />

Bees/Braves (3) and New York<br />

Yankees (1) from 1936-1942.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> lifetime batting average<br />

was .292 over 929 games as an<br />

infielder/outfielder. Batted .333<br />

in the 1942 World Series with the<br />

Yankees.<br />

NICK TREMARK ‘34 - Played outfield for<br />

the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1934-36. Had a<br />

lifetime batting average of .250.<br />

ANTON KARL ‘35 - Pitched for the Boston<br />

Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston<br />

Braves from 1943-47. Posted an 18-23 record<br />

with 26 saves and a 3.51 lifetime ERA.<br />

XAVIER RESCIGNO ‘37 - Pitched for the<br />

Pittsburgh Pirates from 1943-1945. Had 19<br />

wins as a starter and a 14-12 record with 16<br />

saves as a reliever.<br />

CHUCK SCHILLING ‘61<br />

- Hit .240 as a second<br />

baseman with the<br />

Boston Red Sox from<br />

1961-65. Broke Jackie<br />

Robinson’s second base<br />

fielding record.<br />

BOB CHLUPSA ‘67 -<br />

Relief pitcher for the St.<br />

Lou<strong>is</strong> Cardinals during the 1970 and 1971<br />

seasons. Drafted in the fifth round (105th<br />

overall) of the 1967 draft<br />

MARK CONNORS ’71 -<br />

Former New York Yankee<br />

pitching coach. Had been<br />

a roving minor league<br />

pitching coach for years.<br />

Head coach at the University<br />

of Tennessee in 1988-<br />

89. Currently serving as<br />

the bullpen coach for the<br />

Texas Rangers.<br />

TOM WADDELL ‘81 - Relief pitcher for the<br />

Cleveland Indians from 1984-86. Posted a<br />

15-11 lifetime record. Signed a $350,000<br />

arbitration contract in 1987.<br />

MIKE MURPHY ‘83 - Drafted by the Cleveland<br />

Indians in the 18th round as a pitcher.<br />

Spent three years in the Indian’s minor<br />

league system.<br />
