Doug Straley was promoted to Ass<strong>is</strong>tant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in August 2009, after serving as Manhattan's Director of Sports Medicine for the previous six years. Straley superv<strong>is</strong>es the athletic training of the 300+ student-athletes who compete for Manhattan’s 19 Div<strong>is</strong>ion I athletic teams. Prior to h<strong>is</strong> arrival in Riverdale, Straley served as the director of sports medicine at Manhattanville College in nearby Purchase, NY. At Manhattanville, he coordinated the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of athletic injuries for over 250 intercollegiate NCAA Div<strong>is</strong>ion III student-athletes. Before h<strong>is</strong> tenure at Manhattanville, Straley worked for three years as the ass<strong>is</strong>tant director of sports medicine at Assumption College. He ass<strong>is</strong>ted with the medical care of the athletic program’s 19 Div<strong>is</strong>ion II varsity sport teams. Straley, a 1998 graduate of Northeastern University, worked as a student athletic trainer during h<strong>is</strong> undergraduate years. In 1999, he received a master of science degree in athletic training from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Additionally, Straley served as the head athletic trainer for the Westchester Wildfire, a United States Basketball League (USBL) team coached by former New York Knick John Starks. Straley had been publ<strong>is</strong>hed on numerous occasions, and has made several presentations based upon h<strong>is</strong> research in the field of Athletic Training. Straley holds Athletic Training licenses in New York, Massachusetts, and Georgia, and <strong>is</strong> a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He <strong>is</strong> certified as a Strength and Conditioning Special<strong>is</strong>t, as an Athletic Trainer, and in CPR and First Aid. A decorated Eagle Scout, Straley won the Koko Kassabian award while at Northeastern for outstanding achievement in leadership, scholarship, and professional development. A native of Newton, Mass., Straley currently resides in Dobbs Ferry, NY with h<strong>is</strong> wife Jennifer and their daughter Annabelle. Katie Leighton ’02 enters her third year as academic adv<strong>is</strong>or for the Manhattan College Athletic Department. Leighton manages the academic support for Manhattan’s 300+ student-athletes, a role which has helped the department rank among the nation’s best according to several NCAA measures of academic success. Leighton’s duties include ass<strong>is</strong>ting student-athletes in class scheduling, monitor their academic progress, oversee the Student-Athlete Adv<strong>is</strong>ory Committee (SAAC) and coordinate tutoring and other special needs. Prior <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> appointment, Leighton worked as Manhattan’s compliance coordinator for the 2006-07 academic year. In <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> role, she was responsible for monitoring and regulating NCAA eligibility rules. Leighton, an alumna of Manhattan, was a four year letterwinner and two-time team captain for the women’s soccer program. During her career, she was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team three consecutive years. She earned CoSIDA Academic All D<strong>is</strong>trict I Team honors twice, and was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team at the conclusion of her senior year. Leighton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 2002, and earned a master’s degree of arts with a concentration in counseling in 2007. Following her undergraduate studies at Manhattan, Leighton worked as a second grade teacher at Harley Avenue Primary School in Elwood, N.Y. She returned to Manhattan in 2003 holding the roll of ass<strong>is</strong>tant compliance coordinator/ticket manager for two years.
