It is vital that the correct type of safety eyewear is used and the product being provided in the workplace complies to AS1337:1992 which sets out the standards for eye protectors for industrial applications. It should be noted that if you are wearing eyewear which is marked as AS1067:2003 you will not receive any impact protection. This standard refers to sunglasses and general purpose glasses only and should not be used in a workplace environment. How do I know if I am wearing the correct eyewear? There are different types of eye protection that can be worn and it is important that the correct one is selected to give maximum safety. Below you will see the recommended applications for each style. Low Impact Spectacles These should only be worn in an environment where the main danger is from nuisance rather than impact. An example being an application such as sanding of woodwork where a lot of dust may be created, or an electrical pole worker who has an issue with glare. A low impact spectacle can be identifi ed due to the fact it has no lens marking. Medium Impact Spectacles Medium impact should be worn where there is a danger from medium velocity impact such as a nail from a nail gun. A medium impact spectacle that complies with AS1337:1992 will have the letter “I” marked on the lens if it is a tinted spectacle and “IO” if it has a clear lens. High Impact Protection High impact protection can only be achieved under the standards by wearing a suitably tested and identified full face shield. These should be worn when there is a danger of high velocity impact such as debris from an angle grinder. A Full face shield that complies to AS1337:1992 will have the letter “V” on the lens. Heat Protection There are many applications where molten metal or hot solids are an issue and it is recommended that for these applications that a suitable goggle or full face shield is used. Under the standard the lens will be marked with the letter “M” which is suitable for this application. According to government statistics there were over 6500 claims for eye injuries in 2002 in Australia. It is important that eye protection is a priority in the workplace so check the following to make sure you are operating safely.
