Head Protection The wearing of adequate and appropriate head protection in the workplace is vital. For OHS stakeholders refer to AS/NZS 1801 which provides the basis for correct selection. Under the criteria of Australian Standards several factors need to be considered in relation to the life expectancy of a hard hat and its components. 1) AS/NZS1801 states that safety caps and safety helmets have a recommended life of up to three years from the date of issue. 2) The hard hat harness should, as best practice, be replaced every two years. 3) Before using a hard hat always check for cracks, fading or abnormal wear, dull or chalky surface and brittleness. Replace immediately if any of these factors are present. 4) Reduce exposure to extended heat and sunlight by storing in a bag or locker rather than a vehicle parcel shelf as this will assist with maintaining the integrity of the head protector. What Type of Head Protection Should Be Selected? Type 1 ABS Safety Cap - This is the most commonly worn head protection in construction and general industrial applications. It comes with or without a gutter for rain and chemical dust considerations. Type 2 Polycarbonate Safety Cap - This is used specifi cally in high heat environments. Bump Cap - Isn’t manufactured to AS/NZS1801 and generally used to protect against scrapes and minor knocks in domestic situations. Vented - Generally selected when ventilation to assist with cooling the head is required. Unvented - Is best used in areas where dust and chemical hazards exist.
