SECTION 1 RAVENGLASS TO CONISTON
19.57MILES
Introduction
An interesting start from the coast. We
take you along the route of the Eskdale
Railway, into one of the most isolated
valleys in Lakeland. However, in order to
get the descents, you’ll have to climb.,
and this soon begins.
This short day in mileage terms embraces
significant climbs and technical terrain to
test the best.
The Ride
In Wainwright’s Gospel any coast-to-coast
journey should begin with the ceremonial
dipping of a toe in the Irish Sea.
The ride into Eskdale allows you time to
warm up and get used to the Lakeland
fells, with maybe a brew once into the
valley.
Hardnott Pass is avoided with a dink to the
right, followed by a steep climb up and
over towards Coniston and Walna Scar.
Dunnerdale is the place where you meet
this legendary bridleway. Fortune favours
the brave, and good line choice is critical
as you descend on the excellent technical
and rocky surface to Coniston and the end
of a short first day.
