The Red Devils from Jeffersonville, Indiana, were next up on CAL’s schedule Tuesday
night. Jeff took the early lead to eight’s, but CAL then took charge leading the rest of the
way. Games two and three were no contest with Jeff never in the lead in either. CAL
won the match easily (25-16, 25-10, 25-12).
Friday after school, the Centurions traveled to Lexington
to play in the Blue Grass Invitational Tournament,
where they were seeded fourth of 24 teams. CAL easily
won Friday night’s matches against the Madison
High School Indians (25-16, 25-14) and the Ashland
High School Blazers (25-11, 25-13).
Saturday morning proved a bit more challenging against the South
Warren Spartans. CAL dominated the first game, struggled a bit
in the second, but then dominated the third (25-14, 21-25, 15-10).
There was no bite in the next match with the Greenwood Gators.
CAL won easily (25-18, 25-21). After a four hour break, the Centurions
returned to the gym to play the school named after the
1960’s space program, the Apollo Hawks of Owensboro. Things
looked fantastic as CAL trounced the Hawks in game one. However,
the Centurions lost their mojo in games two and three, resulting
in an extremely disappointing match loss (25-10, 24-26,
11-15). This put CAL in a three-way tie for the tourney championship. At this point,
tournament rules came into play, putting CAL in a consolation match instead of the
finals.
CAL’s heart was not entirely in the consolation match against the
strong Cooper High School team from Boone County. CAL fell
to the Jaguars without a fight (21-25, 17-25). As predicted in the
early seeding, CAL finished fourth overall. Ironically, the team
CAL beat first thing in the morning, the South Warren Spartans,
ultimately won the tournament.
This week, CAL will play LaFayette High School in Lexington
Tuesday night and KCD Thursday night at home.
