Welcome to the Grand Marais Art Colony 

The horizon of a new year is mirrored in the expanse of Lake Superior. With every 

lapping wave, lingering sunset or star-studded evening sky, each moment gives us a 

renewed opportunity to be inspired, connected and engaged. 

At the Grand Marais Art Colony, the beauty of nature surrounds and nurtures us. 

It is within this atmosphere that we can disconnect from the distractions of daily life 

and reconnect with our innate creative spirits. We can be more fully present and 

focused to pursue our artistic endeavors. 

Whether you seek artistic instruction, a rejuvenating retreat into a professional art 

studio, active participation in an art-centered festival event or a deeper appreciation 

of art; this year at the Art Colony there are many opportunities to immerse yourself 

in a creative experience surrounded by an engaged and supportive community. 

We are really excited about our new Artist-in-Residence program, which will feature 

artist Hazel Belvo this first year. Not only will Ms. Belvo produce a major body of 

large-scale work during her time at the Art Colony, she will also host three lectures 

and daily open studios for the public to learn, observe and experience the artistic 

process. Another new event is the Northern Fibers Retreat, a cozy festival in the 

heart of winter that celebrates the art and craft of fiber in a community of fellow 

fiber enthusiasts. These new events join our program roster that includes over 100 

classes, six other events and studio access in our four professional art studios. 

Let this new year be an endless horizon of creative exploration. Enter our 

community where strangers become friends and the artistic process is nurtured with

A b o u t T h e G r a n d M a r a i s A r t C o l o n y 

Resting on the edge of the wilderness and Lake Superior is the Grand Marais Art Colony, Minnesota’s longest-lived artist colony. For 

over 65 years, the Grand Marais Art Colony has cultivated a relationship between outdoor inspiration and artistic pursuit. Founded as 

the Outdoor School of Painting, a project of the Minneapolis School of Art (MCAD), the Art Colony has grown to offer a sanctuary 

for the creative spirit allowing both emerging and professional artists to seek guidance, instruction and space to grow.

Cook County is made up of a series of small towns, each with a unique personality, linked together by the ancient Sawtooth 

Mountains, the pristine Boundary Waters Wilderness and the rugged shores of Lake Superior. For generations, visitors have flocked 

to this area to savor its grandeur and explore the surrounding boreal forest. At the center of Cook County is Grand Marais, a quaint 

harbor arts village where you will find eclectic galleries and shops, restaurants and a wide array of accommodations to suit your needs.

From Minneapolis/St. Paul: I-35N toward Duluth. 

Merge on to Highway 61 (follow signs to North Shore) 

continue for 107 miles to Grand Marais. In Grand 

Marais, continue on Highway 61-the harbor will be on 

your right-when the lighthouse becomes perpendicular 

to you and the Java Moose Coffee Shop directly in front, 

turn left on to 3rd Ave. West (away from the harbor) and 

continue up the hill two blocks.

Facilities & Studio Rental 

Historic Building: Built in 1916 as a 

mission Catholic Church, this building houses the 

Administration Office, Founders Hall and Art Library. 

Purchased in the 1960s as the permanent location 

for the Art Colony, this stately white building with 

forest green trim is located just two blocks up from 

downtown Grand Marais and the harbor. 

Founders Hall: This studio has been an inspiring sanctuary for 

generations of artists. Mainly used for our visual arts classes, over 

the years the Founders Hall has hosted a variety of events such as 

exhibits, dances, weddings, concerts and retreats. Superb north 

lighting, high ceilings, suspended hardwood floors and ample wall 

space make this studio an enchanting space. 

Art Library: A cozy loft which includes a growing reference library 

plus a photography work station to document your artwork. 

Retreat to the North Shore of Lake Superior 

to rejuvenate the soul & focus on your art.

Studio Building: The Studio Building opened in 2005, providing the Art Colony with much needed space to provide services to 

artists and expand our art education programs. Located adjacent to the Historic Building, it is connected by a deck that features one of the 

best views of Lake Superior and Artist’s Point. This building includes a clay studio, glass studio, eco-friendly print studio, multi-purpose 

room and the CC Graham private visual arts studios. 

Multi-Purpose Gallery: A 

versatile room, this space is used for a 

variety of classes as well as a small gallery.

Does Paint Freeze? 

Basic Winter Landscape Painting

Tuition: $150 

Painting outdoors is a time-honored tradition 

for capturing the subtle beauty of nature. Winter 

offers the painter a different type of beauty from 

bright whites and cool blues to raking shadows. This class, for the beginner 

to experienced painter, will focus on how to create an outdoor painting by 

simplifying the landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of 

sunlight and shadow. Students will be introduced to the aspects of winter plein air 

painting through the use of color, value, shape, composition and drawing. 

This class is part of the Winter Plein Air Festival held at YMCA Camp Menogyn. 

Lodging and food is not covered in the tuition but can be arranged with the Art 

Colony ($35/night including meals). 

Community Ink Day 

Print Your Valentines 

February 4: 1– 4pm 

Drop-in fee: $5 

Join us for this all-ages event to make and take 

home handmade printed valentines. It’s an 

afternoon of hands-on creative fun. Experience the Art Colony’s eco-friendly, 

professional Print Studio with coaching and assistance from experienced 

printmakers. All supplies are provided for you to make your own unique 

monoprints and relief stamps. 

Beginning Clay

February 9–March 29: 8 Thursdays: 6–8pm 

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $30 

Students with some previous clay experience and 

beginners alike will enjoy this class, which explores all 

things stoneware. Learn how to make bowls, mugs, jars 

and more in this eight-week class focused on wheelthrowing. 

Explore various glazing techniques and elements of functional pottery. 

This class includes 24-hour access to the clay studio during the session. 

I Heart Glass

February 11: 1 day 


Warm your heart with the vibrant colors of glass as 

your creativity leaps in honor of Valentine’s Day. 

Spend a cozy winter day experimenting with glass 

and color. You’ll learn basic glass cutting and glass 

behavior as we explore kiln-carving and full-fuse 

techniques to create beautiful items for you, your home or special valentine. 

Optional kiln opening on Sunday, February 12 at 9:00am or your items can be 

mailed. 

Wheel You Be Mine?

February 14: 5:30–7pm 

Tuition: $12 

Spend Valentine’s Day enjoying wine and chocolates 

while making heart-shaped bowls. Participants will 

create both a wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic 

bowl covered in colorful glazes. No experience 

necessary, a great activity for couples and singles alike 

who want to celebrate this holiday in an artful way.

Kiln-carved Fused Glass 


February 18-19: 1.5 days 

Day 1: 9am-4pm, Day 2: 9am-noon 


This is a fun introduction to glass fusing. Simply cut fiber paper shapes with 

scissors & x-acto blades and stack them in the kiln. Then melt your glass 

over these images to achieve beautiful, intricate designs with very little glass 

cutting required. This is a great class for beginners and advanced students. 

Origami I

Learn the Japanese 

art of paper folding. 

The tradition started in the 17 th 

century and has become a modern 

art form. In this class, you will learn 

to transform paper into a finished 

piece of art – decoration, geometrical 

shape, useful item, animal – the list is 

unending! 

Landscapes in Oil

Transforming Fiber into Art

February 15–16: 2 days 


Have you achieved a certain level of technical success 

in your textile work but are itching to communicate 

more, or further challenge your viewer? In this class, 

we will leap from tradition into contemporary art as 

students develop the ability to analyze their fiber 

work beyond the confines of technique. We will 

examine contemporary fiber artists, and students will complete an artist 

statement as a baseline for developing work. This class is individually driven, 

with studio time, private tutorials and mentoring. 

Experience the joy of creating art with organic 

materials. In this class, students will create a small 

sculpture using wasp nest paper and papier maché 

techniques. Small pottery bowls, saki glasses, or 

tennis balls will be used as a base form for the sculpture, which students 

will then embed with materials such as fiber, feathers, twigs, etc. Once the 

work is dry, further embellishments will be added, including thread, beads or 

organic materials. 

Origami II

Students create complex models and 

learn more about the art of paper 

folding. Students must have previous 

experience with origami or have 

taken Origami I. 

Painting in the studio is an important 

extension to outdoor painting. This oil 

painting class will focus on how to start a studio painting by simplifying the 

landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of sunlight and shadow. 

Emphasis will be placed on translating the elements of painting such as drawing, 

color, value, shape and composition from a small reference source to a large-scale 

format. Students are welcome to work from photographic references. 


Celebrate the Art and Craft of Fiber in the heart of cozy winter. This 

5-day retreat features a variety of classes, Lunch & Learn lectures and a 

community dance, all while celebrating with other fiber enthusiasts. 

Silk Painting Scarves 

Karen Rognsvoog 

Feb. 18-19: 2 days 


Painting on silk is a centuries-old art form 

originating in Asia. Students will use natural plant 

dyes to color the background of the silk scarves for their painting projects. 

Students will then use a Japanese Sumi-e brush to apply colors and designs. 

Other techniques include direct painting on silk with fabric paints, how to 

use a resist to prevent the paint from spreading, color mixing, composition 

and using silk salt for special effects. Students will bring home three unique 

silk scarves. 

Northwoods in Stitches 

Julie Crabtree 

February 18-19: 2 days 


Create a piece of textured stitchery inspired by 

the northwoods to decorate the front of a journal 

or sketchbook. Students will use dissolvable 

stabilizer, snippets of fabrics, hand stitching and 

free motion machine stitching to create textured trees, foliage, birch trees, 

ferns, etc. Once completed, we will add beads and attach the piece to the 

front of a journal. 

Festival Booth 101

Interested in participating in the Grand Marais 

Arts Festival or another art fair? This class 

will teach you the ins and outs of presenting 

your work in an outdoor venue from a veteran 

festival artist. Students will set up a few different canopy options and discuss the 

strengths and weakness of each. To determine the best presentation styles, we will 

set up an art fair booth and consider variations to accommodate each participant’s 

work. Discussion will also include customer interaction and art fair vehicles.

a small project each evening, touching on a range of 

fusing possibilities. Students will learn the basics of

glass frit and sheet glass to create both 2-D and 3-D glass pieces. 

Explore the colorful world of majolica glazes in 

this six-week class. Students will make a variety of 

earthenware pots, bowls and tiles and then paint them 

with the colors of the rainbow. Perfect for beginner and 

intermediate potters who want to make beautiful pots

access to the clay studio during the session. 

Printmaking Sampler

Torch-working Glass

Torch-working is a form of glassblowing utilizing a 

torch to melt the glass. This class will focus on this 

technique and borosilicate glass, which has a higher 

melting point than other art glass. Students will 

learn a brief history of torch-working, safety issues, tool and equipment use, as 

well as beginner techniques that will allow the student to leave the class with 

multiple small projects such as pendants, icicles and marbles. Highly detailed 

demonstrations and explanations will be given as well as individual attention to 

troubleshooting.

If you have always wanted to try soft pastels, this threeday 

class is for you. Discover how a colorful support can 

add depth and vibrancy to your soft pastel paintings. 

Use of color values, texture, and how to build layers 

will be taught. Each student will work on projects 

of their own choice with individual attention, class 

demonstrations and discussion. Students of all levels 

will gain new techniques from this class. 

Take the craft of felting into the realm of artistic 

expression. Students will create two pieces: an 

exploratory flat piece to learn the basics of wet 

and dry felting and a 3-D vessel. Natural fiber rovings and basic graphic principles 

will be the foundation of your work, to which you will add pictorial design via 

thread, roving, beads, buttons and other embellishments. Students will walk away 

empowered to create their own designs using this flexible and versatile medium.

Traveling exhibit coming to the Art Colony in June. 

“Sharing the Fire” will provide a view into the lives and work of four pairs 

of artists whose unique relationships celebrate some of the many ways that 

knowledge, experience and spirit are passed from person to person in this field. 

The Exhibition. Minnesota Potters: Sharing the Fire, includes works 

by Robert Briscoe, Jason Trebs, Linda Christianson, Jil Franke, Warren 

MacKenzie and Guillermo Cuellar. 

The Documentary. Produced by Kathleen Laughlin, it tracks the amazing 

sphere of these potters' stories with each other - exposing the challenge of 

becoming and subsisting as a practicing potter. 

The Workshop & Gallery Talk. Lead by Robert Briscoe and Jason Trebs 

will be held in conjunction with the exhibition. 

Anoka-Ramsey Community College is a fiscal year 2012 recipient of an Arts Tour Minnesota

This class is an introduction to painting in acrylics that 

presents basic painting techniques, design principles, 

and some rudimentary tricks of illusion to get new 

painters started. No experience is necessary for this fun, 

supportive art experience. Liz will do a short painting 

demonstration each day, and be available to students 

to assist as needed during the rest of the studio time. 

Students can bring their own supplies or have the 

instructor provide them through the Supply Fee. 

Using simple fused glass techniques and the Beetle Bit 

Cutting System, you can easily create beautiful glass 

jewelry. In this class, students will learn the basics of 

glass fusing while creating sparkly dichroic pendants, 

earrings and bracelets. Using the correct glass, running a 

kiln, temperatures and types of fusing will be discussed. 

Advanced techniques will also be demonstrated including creating a jewelry bar, 

using a glass saw and fire polishing reworked pieces. 

A Still Life a Day

Explore still life painting through five different artists 

from five periods of history. Music, food and related 

still life items will foster a deeper understanding of the 

theme and enable students to work faster and let go 

of the finished product while embracing the process.

Learn to make unique glass beads in this 

beginning to intermediate lamp-working 

class. Using a Hot Head torch and Mapp Pro 

gas, students will wind molten glass onto steel mandrels. Class will begin with 

basic glass application, adding multiple colors and shaping techniques. Students 

will progress to making a tiger print bead and using dots to create floral beads. 

Students will also work with the delicate dichroic coating on glass to add extra 

sparkle, making beads that shine.

Painting wildlife presents specific challenges 

to ensure the animal is the focal point of the 

painting. This class will focus on a mammal or bird of the northern forest as we

anatomy, coloration and distinct features such as faces and legs. Students will start 

with a one-color value study and then create a full-color painting.

Learn lithographic drawing techniques, electronic imaging, inking procedures, 

multi-color registration, and how to pull a lithograph on an etching press.

American wildflowers. In this three-day 

class, you will learn the fundamental 

structures, techniques and materials of

family and friends. Either way, you will have the knowledge and skills to begin 

creating your own cards at home. No experience necessary, patience is a must. 

Capturing the Light with Watercolor

Watercolor is unique in its ability to capture light in 

luminous flowing washes. This class focuses on color 

and creating the illusion of light. Students will learn 

techniques to paint everything from sunlit summer

Students will develop abstract paintings by taking 

their first drawings of the class and moving those 

images toward greater and greater abstractions in 

subsequent paintings. You will begin with India ink drawings then move into the 

media of your choice. Besides learning how to create an abstract image, we will 

also look at the career development of famous artists as they moved from realism 

to abstraction. 

Students will print images using the monotype technique, 

combining painting and printing processes. A monotype 

is a single, unique print taken from an inked design on a 

sheet of Plexiglas. Students will learn basic intaglio press 

management skills, how to use various inks in multiple 

layers, and additive and subtractive techniques to create 

powerful images. 

The Great American Poster

Get into the spirit of poster printing by creating an 

edition of unique posters by letterpress, using a variety 

of printing mediums. The posters can be fictitious 

with lots of artistic license, or to advertise a real event. 

The printing will be done on a Vandercook printing 

press. Students will use wood and metal hand-set type 

for text and illustrate by wood engraving, linocuts, 

woodcut and airbrush. There will also be some historic stock cuts available to use. 

Pastel Plein Air Painting

Marais. The basics of outdoor painting will

Wood-Fire Raku

Students will learn all facets involved with the woodfire 

raku process. Topics include: glazing, loading, 

firing, unloading and post-firing techniques. Students 

will work together to build a wood-fire raku kiln, a 

process that can be replicated at home. Students are 

encouraged to bring 10-15 small to medium size, cone 

05, bisqued raku vessels to the class. These vessels will 

be glazed and fired during the workshop. Wheel demonstrations and requests will 

be provided as time permits. 

Bead-scapes: Land, Sea or Sky

This is an intermediate level class for people with 

some bead work or appliqué experience and a 

desire to expand their skills in composition, depth 

and texture. Project emphasis is placed on students 

painting a landscape of their choice with beads on felted wool. Additionally, 

students will create multiple small bead renderings to discuss and share with the 

group in a work/study format. Each day will focus on a different textural element, 

technique or pattern creation. 


Gels & Grounds Galore

considerations when working with acrylic grounds 

and gels. Explore a variety of seductive surfaces to paint or draw on with different

This class is for practicing artists who have produced

“Master Class” setting, students will explore the artist within, elaborating on their

hammering steel into a wild animal from the North Shore. In this metal-working 

class focused on forged and welded steel, students will make a 16” sculpture. 

Students will learn various techniques to make realistic sculptures that will be ready 

to set on a mantel or desk or even in the garden. Learn the basics of metalwork 

while learning to think and build in 3-D. Bring images of animals of interest. 

Introduction to Intaglio Printing

Learn the basics of Intaglio printing and open 

the door to a variety of printmaking techniques. 

In this class, we will use drypoint to apply and 

develop an image onto a copper plate and then 

print it using the intaglio process. Students will learn to make and modify a 

drypoint plate, prepare the ink, ink and wipe the plate, prepare the paper, and 

properly use the etching press. This class qualifies students to independently use the 

print studio.

Japanese Clay Techniques

In this class, students will learn the traditional 

aspects of Japanese pottery. Throwing techniques 

covered will include throwing off the hump, 

coiling and paddling. Students will have an 

opportunity to try the Japanese style Karatsu Kick Wheel as well as practicing 

various decorating techniques such as kohiki, dipped white slip, hakime, brushed 

slip, mishima, carving and slip inlay, sgraffito, iron painting and handles using 

rattan and jute. JD will provide hand-dug clay for students to experience.

Adventures in Wheel-throwing

This exciting class includes beginning to advanced 

wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques using 

stoneware and raku clay with under glazes, slips and 

commercial glazes. Marbleizing technique, mishima, 

sgraffito, texture, dry brush and resist decorative 

methods will be explored. The class will include 

technical demonstrations on clay construction, decorative methods and clay 

stamp-making exercise. Introductory information on kiln loading and firing 

processes will also be discussed. To learn the coil method, students will collaborate 

on a group vessel. 

Slumping & Sagging Glass

Explore slumping techniques in clay molds and 

sagging through a drop ring. Participants will 

have the opportunity to complete two small 3-D 

glass pieces while learning the “how-to’s” of fusing

Collagraph Printmaking

Collagraph is a low-tech, high-fun process that 

involves the creation of a printmaking plate or 

matrix from a variety of complex textures and 

marks. Using pressed cardboard, acrylic gel medium and various other media, 

we will easily create plates that yield complex results when run through a press. 

Students will learn basic collagraph platemaking as well as intaglio and relief 

printing, and multiple-page registration. For the beginner to advanced printmaker.

Katazome: Japanese Stencil Dye

Explore this centuries-old Japanese surface design 

technique that incorporates elements of both 

printmaking and painting using simple, nontoxic 

materials. Students will design and cut stencils, apply a rice paste resist onto silk 

and cotton, and then paint them with natural pigments. Students will come away 

with a basic understanding of the materials and techniques of this beautiful textile 

tradition. Creations can be incorporated into quilting and/or wearable art projects. 

Wood Engraving

Detailed drawings get a delicate graphic makeover 

with wood engraving’s distinctly intimate and bold 

characteristics. This intensive two-day class will 

familiarize artists with the tools, materials and printing process of wood engraving 

resulting in an editioned print. Students will learn to transform black and white 

images into various textures to express a full range of value. A print exchange at 

the class end will provide a start for your own wood engraving collection.

Majolica Tile: Explore the World 

of Color

This two-day tile class focuses on Majolica decorating, 

found in historic and contemporary tile and pottery. 

Tile design, history, color theory, and decorative techniques will be explored. 

On the first day, participants will paint with in-glaze stains on raw glazed 

majolica tile. The second day will focus on the technical aspects of tile making. 

We’ll make green tiles decorated with colored slips. Students will go home with 

finished majolica tiles and technical advice about working with clay and recipes. 

The Art of Personal Writing

This class is designed to spark your creative juices and awaken the writer in you. 

It is open to all including beginning writers and those who want to begin again. 

You will be encouraged to explore and expand your writing voice, style, and 

purpose as you examine and discuss the writing process in a variety of forms: 

memoir, fiction, poetry, journaling and letter writing. All you need is a journal, 

your favorite pen and your imagination. 

North Shore Pebble Mosaic

In this class, students will collect colorful pebbles to 

create one to three mosaic pavers, perfect for the yard or 

garden. Students will learn about color sorting, selection 

and application to create vibrant patterns. The drymortar 

method will be used which allows you to see the 

image as you build. Discussion about ancient and contemporary mosaic methods 

will be included and an extensive library will be available for study. Mosaics can 

be picked up the following day. 

Sumi-e: Painting from the Heart

This workshop is designed to have fun with ink, 

watercolor, and rice paper while studying with one 

of America’s leading Sumi-e painters. Class will 

cover traditional and contemporary Sumi-e (Asian ink painting) techniques and 

composition of landscape painting. Emphasis is on “fearless painting from the 

heart” (try new things) while interpreting the spirit and essence of Lake Superior 

and the surrounding woods, rocks, and waters. Some location sketching/painting 

(weather permitting), lots of demonstrations, individual painting time and 

encouragement will structure the class.

A major part of the Renaissance was the understanding of measurable spatial 

relationships and the development of constructed perspective. In this class, we 

will learn how to establish a believable one- or two-point perspective, measure 

depth, orient the viewer and scale objects. Both observed and constructed

Ceramic Teapots

In this two-day class, students will learn to make 

and assemble clay teapots. Design, throwing, surface 

treatments, attaching lids, spouts and handles will be 

covered. Students will also learn about other materials that can be incorporated 

into a teapot design including rattan and jute. Students will practice each step of 

the process and leave with enough experience and information to make their own 

teapot. Previous clay experience is required. 

Create Soft Pastel Sticks

Ever reach into your box of pastels 

and not find the exact color you 

want? In this class, students will learn how to make their own soft pastel sticks 

-light lights, dark darks, or subtle grays and browns. With a few tricks and some 

elbow grease, you could increase your range by 100 or more colors and gain a 

greater understanding of color and this wonderful medium. This class is suited for 

beginners to professionals who are excited about expanding their pastel set. 

Figurative Sculpture

Bring the human form to life by welding, cutting,

sculpture. This class will emphasize two techniques – 

metal-working with forged and hammered steel and 

eight head high, a Middle Ages technique to achieve

an armature and forge it into a gesture before wrapping 

the figure in wire to give it mass.

Japanese Shibori: Wearable Art

Shibori is a Japanese term meaning to bind, wrap, 

fold, twist, stitch or clamp to create a design on 

fabric. Students will learn the techniques used in 

Shibori designs to create subtle and intriguing patterns by manipulating the 

fabric, allowing dye to only partially penetrate the tightly compressed cloth. 

Natural plant dyes will be used and the supplied scarves will be silk and 100% 

cotton. The process can never be fully controlled, creating surprising works of art.

awareness which will be edited and discussed as a class. Leave with 10 strong 

photographs. Please be familiar with operating your digital camera (either SLR or 

point-and-shoot models). 

This class is designed for those who have 

worked with hot wax and want to take 

their work to the next level. Focus will be on each student’s artistic vision and 

determining the best encaustic approaches and techniques to achieve that vision. 

Each student will work on two to three larger pieces that push the medium and 

arrive at completed work. Ongoing critiques, both formal and informal, will take 

place to benefit each student and the class as a whole.

Transfer Dye Collage

Create a fiber art hanging using your own personal 

printed collage imagery while learning about 

transfer dyes. Begin by making a series of quick 

improvisational drawings to generate imagery and 

symbolism that will inspire your collage ideas. Small collages are constructed from 

preprinted transfer dye papers and then sublimated to synthetic fibers using a heat 

press. Once printed, students will arrange the collages into compositions, which 

will be handstitched, wired and/or fused into a completed wall hanging.

Fall on the North Shore is arguably the most 

spectacular season of the year, especially for outdoor 

painters. Autumn colors extend for miles and they 

can become overwhelming for the artist attempting to capture the fleeting scene. 

This class for the beginner to experienced painter will focus on simplifying the 

landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of sunlight and shadow. 

Particular emphasis will be placed on organizing the reds, yellows and oranges of 

fall into an arrangement that has depth and impact.

Dinner, a community art fund-raiser for the local food shelf.

like painting, woodcarving or writing poetry. This class will focus on watercolor to

the act of creativity as life-giving and rejuvenating. Students will create three 

paintings over the two-day class that draws on a lifetime of rich experiences. 

The Beauty of Pencil & Brush

There is nothing more basic and beautiful than 

working with the pencil and brush. In this class, 

we will examine these two instruments and 

their proper use as we apply them to watercolor still life and landscape painting.

glass holiday ornaments. Experiment with colored glass, frit 

and kiln-carving to create multiple ornaments. The kilncarving 

technique uses shapes cut with scissors from fiber 

paper. The glass is then melted over your images to achieve a 

beautiful, intricate design with little glass cutting required.

Meet Our Instructors 

Mary Ellen Ashcroft is an English professor, Episcopal priest, retreat leader 

and writer. She has taught many writing classes, including creative nonfiction, 

fiction and environmental writing, as well as many literature courses. She is the 

author of a number of books including Dogspell: The Gospel According to Dog. 

Her passion is helping people look deeply into themselves to find meaning and 

authenticity. 

Kathleen Baleja is a visual multi-media, movement and performance artist. She 

studied with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, the Royal Conservatory of Music, 

and has attended numerous workshops. She enjoys using materials collected in her 

studio in unusual ways. In 1994, with quilter Judy Morningstar and weaver Elaine 

Rounds, Baleja created over 60 multi-media pieces, one of which was published 

in Fibre Arts Design Book Five. Kathleen has taught in schools, at the Thunder Bay 

Art Gallery and in the correctional system. 

Linda Bauer has a very eclectic interest in fiber, a flame she has carried for over 

50 years. Creative beadwork, bead embroidery and felt have come together in her 

most recent work often inspired and formed by the rocks of Lake Superior. She 

was a dancer/choreographer and taught dance for many years. In addition, she has 

a master’s degree in Art Education. You can see her work at regional arts festival 

and in The Garage in downtown Grand Marais. 

Dorian Beaulieu has been a ceramics and sculpture instructor at Lake Superior 

College in Duluth since 1994. He provides instruction in ceramics, sculpture and 

3-D design. His education includes a MA in Studio Curriculum from University 

of Wisconsin Superior (USW) and a BFA in K-12 Art Education from University 

of Minnesota Duluth. He is currently pursuing an MA in art history from UWS. 

During the winter of 2006 he was an instructor at the Guangzhou Academy of 

Fine Art in Guangzhou, China. 

Hazel Belvo is an artist, master teacher and mentor. She has exhibited 

nationally and internationally for 50 years and her work is in many public 

collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Bezalel Museum, 

the Dewitt Wallace Collection, MMM and General Mills. Hazel was a Radcliffe 

Institute Scholar and WARM Gallery member. She is a professor emeritus at 

Minneapolis College of Art and Design after 34 years of teaching. She has taught 

at the Art Colony for 30 years and was added to the plaque in the Founders Hall 

in appreciation of her long-time commitment. 

Peter Blau teaches adults and children in a variety of venues in the Twin Cities, 

including the Loft Literary Center. He recently received the Minneapolis/St. Paul 

Magazine’s volunteer award for his writing classes in a correctional facility for 

women. In his classes, Peter focuses on using writing as a pathway to creativity, 

self-discovery, and imagination. His goal is to provide a safe, confidential 

environment for students as they move through their own personal writing

James Burke taught intaglio printmaking for 31 years at Louisiana State 

University in Baton Rouge, where he is currently professor emeritus. Burke 

has exhibited his prints extensively throughout his career in local and national 

exhibitions. His work is in many private collections as well as museums including 

the New Orleans Museum of Art, the LSU Museum of Art at the Shaw Center, 

and the Mint Museum of Art, among others. 


Tom Christiansen became interested in metal while witnessing his uncle repair 

implements. “It helped that it was kind of scary and you had to wear special stuff 

to do it,” he explains. Tom attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design and 

graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Minnesota. A fulltime 

artist since 1986, he established Last Chance Fabricating in Lutsen in 1994. 

He has completed commissions for garden installations, architectural elements, 

fountains, light fixtures, furniture and public sculpture. 

Julie Crabtree’s art background has given her the opportunity to develop 

stitchery work in a painterly manner. Utilizing the sewing machine, she draws 

freely over the canvas incorporating hand stitches, dyed threads, fabrics, beads 

and other experimental art techniques. Her love of the outdoors is reflected in 

her work, depicting woods, trees and other textured aspects of nature. Her work 

has been collected by individuals across the country and has won many awards at 

juried art shows in the Midwest, Southwest and East Coast. 

Bonnie Cutts, a Minnesota artist, was trained by Golden Artist Colors in 

1998 for their Working Artist Program. She has offered lectures and hands-on 

workshops throughout the Midwest since that time. She returns to share her 

wealth of information about acrylic materials and techniques. Bonnie’s artwork has 

been exhibited and collected nationally. She received a BFA from the University of 

Minnesota with a concentration in drawing and painting. 

Kelly Dupre is a Grand Marais artist and author. Primarily a printmaker, her 

art can be seen at Sivertson Gallery and throughout the North Shore. Kelly has 

written and/or illustrated several children’s books including The Raven’s Gift, The 

Lion’s Share and Becoming a Boundary Waters Family. The natural environment 

and the art of indigenous cultures are her greatest influences. She loves teaching 

a variety of mediums and age levels. She strives for joy, symbolism and a dash of 

humor in her art. 

Kit Eastman is a textile artist from St. Paul, Minnesota. She makes decorative 

and functional objects, as well as art textiles, hand-painted in the Japanese 

tradition of katazome, or stencil dyeing, using a natural dye palette of soft, rich 

and subtle color on linen, cotton and silk. Her work celebrates daily meetings with 

the wild birds, plants and lake breezes of her urban surroundings. See a gallery of

Joan Farnam was born in Duluth and spent part of her childhood living in 

Canada. She has an MA in Anthropology from California State University, East 

Bay. She began taking ceramic classes at the Duluth Art Institute in 1999 and has 

experience in wheel throwing, primitive firing, raku and majolica painting. She 

regularly teaches classes at the Art Colony, where she is the Clay Studio Facilitator, 

and she writes a weekly blog, NorthShore ArtScene. 

Susan Frame, an American Sumi-e master, has been playing with ink for many 

years, specializing in contemporary and experimental techniques of painting and 

calligraphy. Her teachers include world renowned artists from the U.S., Japan, 

Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. Susan has received many awards for her work, 

which is included in museum, corporate, and private collections. She exhibits 

nationally and internationally including in New York, Paris, Japan, China, and 

Korea; teaches workshops in locations from Alaska to Guatemala; and writes books 

about sumi-e. 

Sharon Frykman is an artist in both oils and glass. She received her BFA in 

painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. There she studied 

under Birney Quick and first came to the Art Colony to teach in the summer 

of 1980. She began delving into stained glass in 1988. In 2000, she and her 

husband, Steve, attended warm-glass classes in Corning, NY. Together they 

specialize in architectural installations in glass, metal and wood through their 

business, Frykman Art Studio. 


Linda Gammell’s photographs have been exhibited and collected nationally. 

She is the recipient of many fellowships and grants, including the Bush Artist 

Fellowship, McKnight Fellowship, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her art 

projects explore concepts of place, including the prairies of the Great Plains and 

the forests and water of Lake Superior. She has taught photography at various 

institutions, including Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Colorado College, 

St. Olaf College, Hamline University, and the College of Visual Arts. 

Sandi Pillsbury Gredzens is a North Shore artist and educator. She has 

a BFA from University of California Santa Cruz, and a Masters in Education 

from Hamline. Also, she has a K-6 multi-subject teaching license and a K-12 art 

education license. Sandi has been a practicing artist for 40+ years, has taken classes 

at the Art Colony for 26 years and now has taught at the Art Colony for five years. 

She is currently the board chair of the Art Colony. 

Carolyn Halliday uses the vocabulary and skills of textiles to sculpt forms and 

2-D art that often reference body and/or nature. Primarily she hand knits wire 

and other nontraditional materials into forms that grow from simple elements 

of nature and life’s daily debris. She has exhibited in local and national juried 

shows for 15 years. Her work has been published in the book Knitting Art: 150 

Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists, Surface Design Journal, Interweave 

Knits, and Jaquard, an Italian Journal. 

David Hahn has always loved to draw. After two years at The Washington 

University School of Fine Arts, he worked at McDonnell Aircraft Corp. as a 

technical illustrator; the first of six companies. David and his wife Virginia retired 

to Hovland and he focused on painting water color landscapes. His work has 

shown at the CoHo Cafe, Johnson Heritage Post, Hovland Art Fair, Cook County 

High School Gym and at the Art Colony. 

Jeffrey Hirst is a painter/printmaker from Minneapolis. He received a BFA in 

printmaking from the University of Minnesota and a MFA in printmaking and 

painting from Louisiana State University. He has exhibited and given encaustic 

demonstrations and gallery talks throughout the United States at various 

conferences and universities. He has participated as a visiting artist at Normandale 

Community College in Bloomington, North Hennepin Community College in 

Brooklyn Center, and at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. 

Jim Horton has practiced and instructed printmaking and graphic design for 42 

years. His studio is in rural Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is an honorary member of 

the Society of Wood Engravers in England. Jim has a keen interest in the history 

and use of mechanical printing devices and processes. Jim learned wood engraving 

from the remnants of one of the last commercial engraving companies (Sander) in 

Chicago. Jim helped to found an international group called the Wood Engravers’ 

Network. 

JD Jorgenson is originally from Bismarck, ND, and completed his degree at the 

University of Iowa. He then moved to Minneapolis where he taught at Northern 

Clay Center. Jorgenson received a Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. 

After the grant, he apprenticed to Richard Bresnahan. Jorgenson presented at the 

International Wood-Fired Ceramics conference in Flagstaff in 2006 and in Duluth 

in 2007. Jorgenson Pottery was established in 2004. 

Matt Kania is a member of the Grand Marais Art Colony, the Northern 

Printmakers Alliance (Duluth) and the Highpoint Center for Printmaking 

(Minneapolis). Matt has exhibited his work at the Northern Prints Gallery, the 

Highpoint Center Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, Grand Marais Art Colony 

and the Bloomington Art Center. In recent years, he has focused on creating 

imagery using less toxic, portable printmaking techniques, such as polyester plate

Karin Kraemer has a BFA in hot glass from St. Cloud State University and a 

MFA in ceramics from Southern Illinois University. She moved to Duluth several 

years ago after living all over the country, working and exploring, developing 

her work, making pottery and traveling. Karin loves to camp, garden and cook. 

These elements all come together in her work which celebrates everything from 

individual flowers in her garden to landscape, good friends and making food. 

Stephen Krasemann traveled the globe searching for wildlife with the 

Illustrations Division of the National Geographic Society. In 2001, he switched 

to painting full time and parked his easel between the Yukon Territory Mountains 

and the Lake Superior forests where he creates oil paintings from first-hand 

experiences. Stephen is a charter member of Artists for Conservation and 

Worldwide Nature Artists Group. His work is featured in public and private 

collections throughout the USA and Canada. 

Jo Ann Krause has a Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota 

and is a retired educator who taught elementary school and K-6 Art. She enjoys 

the experience of working with creative children of all ages during summer art 

sessions and private lessons. In her spare time she likes to work on printmaking, 

collage, jewelry, and fiber arts. 

Jeanne Larson has taught workshops and classes in both traditional watercolor 

and mixed watermedia/collage for many years in the Twin Cities and regional 

art centers. She’s been represented by several of the finest galleries in the region 

for over 20 years, has won awards and been a featured speaker for many arts 

organizations and societies. Her original paintings are included in corporate and 

private collections in homes and businesses in the USA and abroad. 

Gretchen Lisdahl started working with glass in 2002. Her first love was lampworking, 

and since has expanded her glass skills to stained and fused glass, mosaic 

and more. She has been working at Peachie’s Stained Glass for nine years. She 

considers herself blessed to continue to learn more about glass every day. Glass 

bead making continues to be her favorite media and she suspects it always will be. 

Dan Neff was born and raised in northeastern Minnesota. He took a 

Community Education class on torch-working glass followed by a two-year 

apprenticeship program learning the basics of the craft. After completing his 

apprenticeship, Dan began demonstrating his torch-working at festivals and fineart 

shows. After finishing his undergraduate studies at University of Minnesota, 

Duluth, Dan traveled around the country to learn from world-renowned glass 

marble artists such as John Kobuki and Gateson Recko. 

Judd Nelson has been creating forged and welded sculptures since he was 17 

and completed his formal training in art at the University of Minnesota. He has 

taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts as well as in Native American and 

public schools around the country. Judd also worked as a lead builder at Home

Jon Neuse’s basic principles of art are experimentation and artistic judgment. 

Most of his imagery is abstracted from remembered landscape. He manipulates 

formal artistic elements to force competing images into lasting and taut 

relationships. “It’s difficult to make abstract art,” he says, “because there are no 

– nor should there be – definite rules for how to proceed. For me, art without 

playfulness is not serious art.” Neuse has been teaching art to adults for the past 

35 years. 

Sally Nystrom graduated from St. Catherine’s College. She furthered her 

studies with extensive classes in art history. She began teaching in 1996 in a 

private studio with Sally Brown (a WARM founder) and on her own, including 

for the University of Minnesota’s Split Rock program for 16 years. When Sally is 

not teaching, she works on a series of figurative oil paintings. She shows her work 

in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is part of “The Rain Collective,” a professional 

artist group. 

Kimber Olson creates art textiles from various materials that she dyes, prints 

and paints. She’s worked exclusively with cloth since 1997 when she discovered 

the practice of surface design. Intense color, unique patterns and rich textures 

are hallmarks of her work, which has been exhibited locally and regionally. She 

recently completed a master’s degree in theology and art at United Theological 

Seminary where her studies explored the intersections of art, creativity and 

consciousness. 

Mary Pettis has been recognized as an eloquent and respected teacher. 

Classically trained, she has taught for 35 years in Wisconsin, Minnesota, 

Tuscany, Venice, France, and for Plein Air Painters of Hawaii in Maui. She has 

been juried into, and won, awards in national painting events and exhibitions 

in New York City to Scottsdale and Maui. Mary has exhibited at the Palais de 

Nations and at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. For more info about

Joanne Price is a Minnesota artist specializing in relief printmaking. In 

addition to exhibiting work internationally, Price was the recipient of the 

2009–2010 Jerome Book Arts Fellowship grant through the Minnesota Center 

for Book Arts (MCBA). She worked at Highpoint Center for Printmaking for 

more than seven years and organizes exhibits for the Wood Engravers’ Network. 

Currently, Mrs. Price teaches Printmaking and Typography at Augsburg College 

and is the Exhibitions Manager for the MCBA. 

Jerry Riach owned and operated The Raven Gallery in Minneapolis for 

10 years. He studied drawing at the Edina Art Center and printmaking at 

Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Highpoint Center for Printmaking and 

with Charles Beck. Jerry now lives in Little Marais, where he has a printmaking 

studio. His work is mostly inspired by nature and includes etching, drypoint, 

woodblock, wood engraving, and collagraph printmaking as well as drawing. 

Jayne Richards grew up in Grand Marais and completed her BFA from 

University of Minnesota, Duluth. Her Rock Series in pastel and acrylic have 

shown at the Johnson Heritage Post. She also shows her work at the Grand 

Marais Art Festival. She taught graphic design at the Minnesota School of 

Business and currently works as a free-lance graphic designer, doing volunteer 

work for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and graphic support for the WJ Thom 

Company Promo Products. 

Sue Robinson is an artist, commercial illustrator, and educator. Her passion 

for the natural world is reflected in her project choices, such as illustrating the 

flora and fauna of the Everglades and Dry Tortugas for the US Park Service. 

She created “The Superior Experience” for the US Superior National Forest and 

illustrated two books on the Boundary Waters by Michael Furtman. For 15 

years, Sue taught middle school/high school visual art. She delights in guiding 

students on their path toward “personal voice.” 

Karen Rognsvoog has been dyeing natural fibers and growing plants for dye 

since the mid 1970s. She’s always been interested in the colors of nature. Boiling 

plants, weeds, flowers and bark for use with fibers became a passion. Rognsvoog 

teaches at various art and craft centers in Minnesota and Wisconsin including 

the North House Folk School and Minnetonka Center for the Arts. She is a 

professional pianist, teaches piano lessons and watercolor painting. 

Kathi “Peachie” Schmid started her obsession with stained glass in 1984. In 

1991, she turned her obsession into a career by opening Peachie’s Stained Glass. 

She has taken professional classes in every facet of hot and cold glass working, 

and continues her education every chance she gets. Glass fusing particularly 


excites her because of the limitless projects that can be made. There is always 

something new to create! 

Nancy Seaton loves color and light. She received her BA from St. Olaf 

College where she focused on watercolor and blown glass. The Art Colony’s 

warm glass studio is a great resource she feels lucky to have as part of her life. 

She lives on the Gunflint Trail with her husband and two boys. 

Shawn Sheehy combines paper engineering and papermaking with an interest 

in biology and cultural evolution to produce sculptural pop-up books. Shawn 

has taught workshops at PBI, Penland, the Center for the Book Arts in Chicago 

and New York, and many other venues across the U.S. His commercial pop-up 

clients include American Greetings, PeeWee Herman and Vintage Magazine. To

Kathleen Sheridan is a self-taught origamist. She began folding in the 

fourth grade and is now a regular at national conventions and has origami 

friends across the globe. She runs a local group of folders, gives origami 

demonstrations and teaches summer camp origami classes for children. When 

asked why origami is such a passion, Kathleen says that after all these years of 

folding, it is still so amazing to her that something so beautiful can come from a 

piece of paper. 

Neil Sherman is primarily a plein air artist. He is the past board chair of the 

Art Colony and the current chair of the Events Committee. Before moving to 

Grand Marais, Neil was a classroom monitor for Joe Paquet at the Hurinenko 

and Paquet Studio, assisting with critiques for beginner and advanced students. 

Neil received his BA from St. John’s University and studied at the Minnesota 

River School of Fine Arts and the Hurinenko and Paquet Studio. 

Liz Sivertson credits her dad, Howard Sivertson, for her most valuable 

training in art. She credits her sister, Jan Sivertson (owner of Sivertson Gallery), 

as the one who “made a career out of it (art)” by selling over 800 of Liz’s original 

paintings to private collectors. Liz’s colorful acrylics illustrate a children’s book 

by Reeve Lindbergh, titled North Country Spring. Liz has a Bachelor of Fine Arts 

degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. 

Lisa Stauffer received a Masters in Design from the University of Minnesota 

and studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design. She has worked and taught 

in a wide variety of media; now she primarily focuses on soft pastel with a 

special focus on painting “en plein air” to indulge her fascination with light and 

color in the beautiful North Shore landscape. Lisa was awarded Master Circle 

status by the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2009.

Laura Stone began doing mosaics after a chance visit to the St. Louis Basilica, 

which has an extensive mosaic interior. She found the media to be a way to 

merge 30 years of drawing with her passion for stone and glass. Underlying 

her work is an ongoing fascination for natural dynamics including weather, 

water, geology, plant biology, psychology, and spirit. She has been on the faculty 

of Gustavus Adolphus College, Minneapolis College of Art and Design and 

teaches private workshops. 

Tod Sylvester grew up near the Art Colony and spent endless hours watching 

the founders lecture and produce art. In 1977, he was awarded a scholarship to 

work with founder Birney Quick in watercolors. He is a tile setter by trade and 

has incorporated artful mosaics into his commercial and residential jobs. He has 

also created and donated many mosaic pieces, most recently to WTIP radio and 

the Trout Lake Lodge. 

Peggy Thompson (who paints under the name of Margaret Carroll) completed 

her BFA and MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Peggy has had 

numerous exhibits of her paintings throughout the region, including Chicago and 

in Australia. She began an arts program for elders which has been very successful 

and is now known statewide. 

Michael Tonder has been designing, producing and selling glass art work since 

the mid 1980s. He has traveled extensively doing both indoor and outdoor art fairs 

in the Midwest and southeast parts of the United States. 

Laurie Toth received a BA in painting from Minneapolis College of Art and 

Design where she studied under Birney Quick and attended the Art Colony, 

where she fell in love with landscape painting. Laurie’s primary medium is soft 

pastel and she makes her own sticks to augment the sets purchased. Laurie lives 

in Minneapolis and has 30 years of teaching experience at many of the local art 

centers. Laurie is currently illustrating a series of fictional historical short stories. 

Todd Voss was born and raised in Davenport, IA. In 1990, he received a BFA in 

oil painting from Maharishi International University, in Fairfield, IA. Todd lived for 

10 years on the North Shore, and now divides his time between there and Detroit 

Lakes. For over 20 years, Todd has painted the Upper Midwest landscape, as a fulltime 

artist, both outdoors and in the studio. He is represented by Sivertson Gallery 

and Fine Line Designs Gallery. 

Ann Ward received an art degree from Winona State University. She apprenticed 

with potter Jim Russell and then spent eight years working with potter Lynette 

Power. She lives in Grand Marais, and is part of the group known as “The Art 

Colony Potters.” Ann has shown work at the Johnson Heritage Post, Cross River 

Heritage Center and Betsy Bowen’s Studio. You can find her pottery for sale at the 

farmers’ market during the summer in downtown Grand Marais. 

Erik Waterkotte received his MFA from the University of Alberta and his BFA 

from Illinois State University. Waterkotte has shown his prints both nationally and 

internationally. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art 

at Minnesota State University Mankato and was a Visiting Assistant Professor in 

Printmaking at Indiana University, Bloomington. Waterkotte has been a visiting 

artist at universities throughout the US and the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts 

Board Emerging Artist Initiative Grant. 

Tom Westbrook is a teacher, designer, writer, artist, and craftsman. He studied 

Art History, Studio Arts and Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Currently 

he teaches at the University of Minnesota focusing on humanitarian and sustainable 

design and at the College of Visual Art where he teaches a visual geometry class. In 

addition to teaching and writing he is founding partner of realize, llc., a design and 

fabrication firm providing services to the design industry. 

Melissa Wickwire finds that teaching often inspires her own artwork and her 

artwork informs her teaching. She especially enjoys sharing her love of clay. Melissa 

studied ceramics and art education in upstate New York and taught art at a public 

school in Wyoming for six years before heading to the North Shore. When Melissa 

is not working as the Cook County Youth Coordinator you will find her with her 

family or in the Clay Studio at the Art Colony. 

Jo Wood is an award-winning bead and fiber artist who has practiced her skills 

for more than 40 years. Her “bead paintings” are a celebration of place, inspired by 

nature and life in northern Minnesota. She shares her passion for bead embroidery 

by teaching regionally and nationally. Jo’s beaded landscapes have appeared in 

various publications and juried exhibits. Her work is represented by several galleries 

and is found in homes and collections around the country and in Europe. www.

Joyce Yamamoto is a mixed-media collage artist who trains artists to be entrepreneurs. 

She believes artists who serve as resource people are community builders in 

the broadest sense. The transformation process is what fuels her creativity. She sees 

these transformations everywhere; paper plus paint become a painting, words plus 

paper fragments become a collage, clay plus high heat become pottery, and artists 

plus information become entrepreneurial.

nationality or ethnicity. 

• Students under the age of 14-16 must be accompanied by an adult also taking the class (with 

the exception of youth classes) 

• Classes are open to students of all skill levels, from beginner to advance unless otherwise noted. 

Membership: 

• It is not required to be an Art Colony member to attend classes. However, membership plays 

a vital role in health of the Grand Marais Art Colony. 

• Membership Gift Cards can be applied toward your tuition payment. See opposite page for 

membership levels and benefits. 

• The Grand Marais Art Colony is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, making your donation 

tax deductible.
