Majolica Tile: Explore the World<br />

of Color<br />

August 18-19: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $12<br />

This two-day tile class focuses on Majolica decorating,<br />

found in historic and contemporary tile and pottery.<br />

Tile design, history, color theory, and decorative techniques will be explored.<br />

On the first day, participants will paint with in-glaze stains on raw glazed<br />

majolica tile. The second day will focus on the technical aspects of tile making.<br />

We’ll make green tiles decorated with colored slips. Students will go home with<br />

finished majolica tiles and technical advice about working with clay and recipes.<br />

The <strong>Art</strong> of Personal Writing<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $6<br />

This class is designed to spark your creative juices and awaken the writer in you.<br />

It is open to all including beginning writers and those who want to begin again.<br />

You will be encouraged to explore and expand your writing voice, style, and<br />

purpose as you examine and discuss the writing process in a variety of forms:<br />

memoir, fiction, poetry, journaling and letter writing. All you need is a journal,<br />

your favorite pen and your imagination.<br />

North Shore Pebble Mosaic<br />

August 18-19: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $190 / Supply Fee: $28<br />

In this class, students will collect colorful pebbles to<br />

create one to three mosaic pavers, perfect for the yard or<br />

garden. Students will learn about color sorting, selection<br />

and application to create vibrant patterns. The drymortar<br />

method will be used which allows you to see the<br />

image as you build. Discussion about ancient and contemporary mosaic methods<br />

will be included and an extensive library will be available for study. Mosaics can<br />

be picked up the following day.<br />

Sumi-e: Painting from the Heart<br />

August 20-24: 5 days<br />

Tuition: $475<br />

This workshop is designed to have fun with ink,<br />

watercolor, and rice paper while studying with one<br />

of America’s leading Sumi-e painters. Class will<br />

cover traditional and contemporary Sumi-e (Asian ink painting) techniques and<br />

composition of landscape painting. Emphasis is on “fearless painting from the<br />

heart” (try new things) while interpreting the spirit and essence of Lake Superior<br />

and the surrounding woods, rocks, and waters. Some location sketching/painting<br />

(weather permitting), lots of demonstrations, individual painting time and<br />

encouragement will structure the class.<br />

Rules of Perspective<br />

A major part of the Renaissance was the understanding of measurable spatial<br />

relationships and the development of constructed perspective. In this class, we<br />

will learn how to establish a believable one- or two-point perspective, measure<br />

depth, orient the viewer and scale objects. Both observed and constructed<br />

perspective will be covered.<br />

Ceramic Teapots<br />

August 25-26: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $20<br />

In this two-day class, students will learn to make<br />

and assemble clay teapots. Design, throwing, surface<br />

treatments, attaching lids, spouts and handles will be<br />

covered. Students will also learn about other materials that can be incorporated<br />

into a teapot design including rattan and jute. Students will practice each step of<br />

the process and leave with enough experience and information to make their own<br />

teapot. Previous clay experience is required.<br />

Create Soft Pastel Sticks<br />

Ever reach into your box of pastels<br />

and not find the exact color you<br />

want? In this class, students will learn how to make their own soft pastel sticks<br />

-light lights, dark darks, or subtle grays and browns. With a few tricks and some<br />

elbow grease, you could increase your range by 100 or more colors and gain a<br />

greater understanding of color and this wonderful medium. This class is suited for<br />

beginners to professionals who are excited about expanding their pastel set.<br />

Figurative Sculpture<br />

Judd Nelson<br />

August 25-26: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $28<br />

Bring the human form to life by welding, cutting,<br />

forging and hammering plate steel into a 16” figure<br />

sculpture. This class will emphasize two techniques –<br />

metal-working with forged and hammered steel and<br />

eight head high, a Middle Ages technique to achieve<br />

proper figure proportions. Finally, students will make<br />

an armature and forge it into a gesture before wrapping<br />

the figure in wire to give it mass.<br />

Personal <strong>Art</strong> Critique & Discussion<br />

In this special, informal class, instructor Mary Pettis<br />

will help you obtain a clear vision of your artistic<br />

goals and offer technical and practical suggestions to help you get there faster.<br />

Bring up to five paintings for a personal critique and discussion.<br />

Creative Breakthrough: Bring the<br />

<strong>Art</strong> Spirit into Your Work<br />

Through exercises, lectures, discussions and<br />

demonstrations, students will learn the path to<br />

finding their inner creative spirit. Each day we will paint - not to turn out finished<br />

pieces, but to get a sense of the exercises that will make stronger, more powerful<br />

paintings in each of six considerations: Line, Shape, Values, Color, Edges and<br />

Texture. Improve your work at an astonishing rate by understanding what makes a<br />

Master Painting: having something to say, and knowing how to say it.<br />
