The horizon of a new year is mirrored in the expanse of Lake Superior. With every<br />

lapping wave, lingering sunset or star-studded evening sky, each moment gives us a<br />

renewed opportunity to be inspired, connected and engaged.<br />

At the <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, the beauty of nature surrounds and nurtures us.<br />

It is within this atmosphere that we can disconnect from the distractions of daily life<br />

and reconnect with our innate creative spirits. We can be more fully present and<br />

focused to pursue our artistic endeavors.<br />

Whether you seek artistic instruction, a rejuvenating retreat into a professional art<br />

studio, active participation in an art-centered festival event or a deeper appreciation<br />

of art; this year at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> there are many opportunities to immerse yourself<br />

in a creative experience surrounded by an engaged and supportive community.<br />

We are really excited about our new <strong>Art</strong>ist-in-Residence program, which will feature<br />

artist Hazel Belvo this first year. Not only will Ms. Belvo produce a major body of<br />

large-scale work during her time at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, she will also host three lectures<br />

and daily open studios for the public to learn, observe and experience the artistic<br />

process. Another new event is the Northern Fibers Retreat, a cozy festival in the<br />

heart of winter that celebrates the art and craft of fiber in a community of fellow<br />

fiber enthusiasts. These new events join our program roster that includes over 100<br />

classes, six other events and studio access in our four professional art studios.<br />

Let this new year be an endless horizon of creative exploration. Enter our<br />

community where strangers become friends and the artistic process is nurtured with<br />

Resting on the edge of the wilderness and Lake Superior is the <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, Minnesota’s longest-lived artist colony. For<br />

over 65 years, the <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> has cultivated a relationship between outdoor inspiration and artistic pursuit. Founded as<br />

the Outdoor School of Painting, a project of the Minneapolis School of <strong>Art</strong> (MCAD), the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> has grown to offer a sanctuary<br />

for the creative spirit allowing both emerging and professional artists to seek guidance, instruction and space to grow.<br />

Cook County is made up of a series of small towns, each with a unique personality, linked together by the ancient Sawtooth<br />

Mountains, the pristine Boundary Waters Wilderness and the rugged shores of Lake Superior. For generations, visitors have flocked<br />

to this area to savor its grandeur and explore the surrounding boreal forest. At the center of Cook County is <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>, a quaint<br />

harbor arts village where you will find eclectic galleries and shops, restaurants and a wide array of accommodations to suit your needs.<br />

From Minneapolis/St. Paul: I-35N toward Duluth.<br />

Merge on to Highway 61 (follow signs to North Shore)<br />

continue for 107 miles to <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>. In <strong>Grand</strong><br />

<strong>Marais</strong>, continue on Highway 61-the harbor will be on<br />

your right-when the lighthouse becomes perpendicular<br />

to you and the Java Moose Coffee Shop directly in front,<br />

turn left on to 3rd Ave. West (away from the harbor) and<br />

continue up the hill two blocks.<br />

Facilities & Studio Rental<br />

Historic Building: Built in 1916 as a<br />

mission Catholic Church, this building houses the<br />

Administration Office, Founders Hall and <strong>Art</strong> Library.<br />

Purchased in the 1960s as the permanent location<br />

for the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, this stately white building with<br />

forest green trim is located just two blocks up from<br />

downtown <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> and the harbor.<br />

Founders Hall: This studio has been an inspiring sanctuary for<br />

generations of artists. Mainly used for our visual arts classes, over<br />

the years the Founders Hall has hosted a variety of events such as<br />

exhibits, dances, weddings, concerts and retreats. Superb north<br />

lighting, high ceilings, suspended hardwood floors and ample wall<br />

space make this studio an enchanting space.<br />

<strong>Art</strong> Library: A cozy loft which includes a growing reference library<br />

plus a photography work station to document your artwork.<br />

Studio Building: The Studio Building opened in 2005, providing the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> with much needed space to provide services to<br />

artists and expand our art education programs. Located adjacent to the Historic Building, it is connected by a deck that features one of the<br />

best views of Lake Superior and <strong>Art</strong>ist’s Point. This building includes a clay studio, glass studio, eco-friendly print studio, multi-purpose<br />

room and the CC Graham private visual arts studios.<br />

Multi-Purpose Gallery: A<br />

versatile room, this space is used for a<br />

variety of classes as well as a small gallery.<br />

Does Paint Freeze?<br />

Basic Winter Landscape Painting<br />

Tuition: $150<br />

Painting outdoors is a time-honored tradition<br />

for capturing the subtle beauty of nature. Winter<br />

offers the painter a different type of beauty from<br />

bright whites and cool blues to raking shadows. This class, for the beginner<br />

to experienced painter, will focus on how to create an outdoor painting by<br />

simplifying the landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of<br />

sunlight and shadow. Students will be introduced to the aspects of winter plein air<br />

painting through the use of color, value, shape, composition and drawing.<br />

This class is part of the Winter Plein Air Festival held at YMCA Camp Menogyn.<br />

Lodging and food is not covered in the tuition but can be arranged with the <strong>Art</strong><br />

<strong>Colony</strong> ($35/night including meals).<br />

Community Ink Day<br />

Print Your Valentines<br />

February 4: 1– 4pm<br />

Drop-in fee: $5<br />

Join us for this all-ages event to make and take<br />

home handmade printed valentines. It’s an<br />

afternoon of hands-on creative fun. Experience the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>’s eco-friendly,<br />

professional Print Studio with coaching and assistance from experienced<br />

printmakers. All supplies are provided for you to make your own unique<br />

monoprints and relief stamps.<br />

Beginning Clay<br />

February 9–March 29: 8 Thursdays: 6–8pm<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $30<br />

Students with some previous clay experience and<br />

beginners alike will enjoy this class, which explores all<br />

things stoneware. Learn how to make bowls, mugs, jars<br />

and more in this eight-week class focused on wheelthrowing.<br />

Explore various glazing techniques and elements of functional pottery.<br />

This class includes 24-hour access to the clay studio during the session.<br />

Warm your heart with the vibrant colors of glass as<br />

your creativity leaps in honor of Valentine’s Day.<br />

Spend a cozy winter day experimenting with glass<br />

and color. You’ll learn basic glass cutting and glass<br />

behavior as we explore kiln-carving and full-fuse<br />

techniques to create beautiful items for you, your home or special valentine.<br />

Optional kiln opening on Sunday, February 12 at 9:00am or your items can be<br />

mailed.<br />

Have you achieved a certain level of technical success<br />

in your textile work but are itching to communicate<br />

more, or further challenge your viewer? In this class,<br />

we will leap from tradition into contemporary art as<br />

students develop the ability to analyze their fiber<br />

work beyond the confines of technique. We will<br />

examine contemporary fiber artists, and students will complete an artist<br />

statement as a baseline for developing work. This class is individually driven,<br />

with studio time, private tutorials and mentoring.<br />

Experience the joy of creating art with organic<br />

materials. In this class, students will create a small<br />

sculpture using wasp nest paper and papier maché<br />

techniques. Small pottery bowls, saki glasses, or<br />

tennis balls will be used as a base form for the sculpture, which students<br />

will then embed with materials such as fiber, feathers, twigs, etc. Once the<br />

work is dry, further embellishments will be added, including thread, beads or<br />

organic materials.<br />

extension to outdoor painting. This oil<br />

painting class will focus on how to start a studio painting by simplifying the<br />

landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of sunlight and shadow.<br />

Emphasis will be placed on translating the elements of painting such as drawing,<br />

color, value, shape and composition from a small reference source to a large-scale<br />

format. Students are welcome to work from photographic references.<br />

Silk Painting Scarves<br />

Painting on silk is a centuries-old art form<br />

originating in Asia. Students will use natural plant<br />

dyes to color the background of the silk scarves for their painting projects.<br />

Students will then use a Japanese Sumi-e brush to apply colors and designs.<br />

Other techniques include direct painting on silk with fabric paints, how to<br />

use a resist to prevent the paint from spreading, color mixing, composition<br />

and using silk salt for special effects. Students will bring home three unique<br />

silk scarves.<br />

Northwoods in Stitches<br />

Create a piece of textured stitchery inspired by<br />

the northwoods to decorate the front of a journal<br />

ferns, etc. Once completed, we will add beads and attach the piece to the<br />

Torch-working is a form of glassblowing utilizing a<br />

torch to melt the glass. This class will focus on this<br />

technique and borosilicate glass, which has a higher<br />

well as beginner techniques that will allow the student to leave the class with<br />

multiple small projects such as pendants, icicles and marbles. Highly detailed<br />

demonstrations and discussion. Students of all levels<br />

will gain new techniques from this class.<br />

Take the craft of felting into the realm of artistic<br />

expression. Students will create two pieces: an<br />

exploratory flat piece to learn the basics of wet<br />

and dry felting and a 3-D vessel. Natural fiber rovings and basic graphic principles<br />

will be the foundation of your work, to which you will add pictorial design via<br />

thread, roving, beads, buttons and other embellishments. Students will walk away<br />

empowered to create their own designs using this flexible and versatile medium.<br />

“Minnesota Potters: Sharing the Fire”<br />

Traveling exhibit coming to the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> in June.<br />

“Sharing the Fire” will provide a view into the lives and work of four pairs<br />

of artists whose unique relationships celebrate some of the many ways that<br />

knowledge, experience and spirit are passed from person to person in this field.<br />

The Exhibition. Minnesota Potters: Sharing the Fire, includes works<br />

by Robert Briscoe, Jason Trebs, Linda Christianson, Jil Franke, Warren<br />

MacKenzie and Guillermo Cuellar.<br />

The Documentary. Produced by Kathleen Laughlin, it tracks the amazing<br />

sphere of these potters' stories with each other - exposing the challenge of<br />

becoming and subsisting as a practicing potter.<br />

The Workshop & Gallery Talk. Lead by Robert Briscoe and Jason Trebs<br />

will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.<br />

This class is an introduction to painting in acrylics that<br />

presents basic painting techniques, design principles,<br />

and some rudimentary tricks of illusion to get new<br />

painters started. No experience is necessary for this fun,<br />

supportive art experience. Liz will do a short painting<br />

demonstration each day, and be available to students<br />

to assist as needed during the rest of the studio time.<br />

Students can bring their own supplies or have the<br />

instructor provide them through the Supply Fee.<br />

Using simple fused glass techniques and the Beetle Bit<br />

Cutting System, you can easily create beautiful glass<br />

jewelry. In this class, students will learn the basics of<br />

glass fusing while creating sparkly dichroic pendants,<br />

earrings and bracelets. Using the correct glass, running a<br />

kiln, temperatures and types of fusing will be discussed.<br />

Advanced techniques will also be demonstrated including creating a jewelry bar,<br />

using a glass saw and fire polishing reworked pieces.<br />

Learn to make unique glass beads in this<br />

beginning to intermediate lamp-working<br />

class. Using a Hot Head torch and Mapp Pro<br />

gas, students will wind molten glass onto steel mandrels. Class will begin with<br />

basic glass application, adding multiple colors and shaping techniques. Students<br />

will progress to making a tiger print bead and using dots to create floral beads.<br />

Students will also work with the delicate dichroic coating on glass to add extra<br />

sparkle, making beads that shine.<br />

awareness which will be edited and discussed as a class. Leave with 10 strong<br />

Create a fiber art hanging using your own personal<br />

printed collage imagery while learning about<br />

transfer dyes. Begin by making a series of quick<br />

improvisational drawings to generate imagery and<br />

preprinted transfer dye papers and then sublimated to synthetic fibers using a heat<br />

press. Once printed, students will arrange the collages into compositions, which<br />

Fall on the North Shore is arguably the most<br />

spectacular season of the year, especially for outdoor<br />

painters. Autumn colors extend for miles and they<br />

landscape to its basic elements: atmospheric progression of sunlight and shadow.<br />

Particular emphasis will be placed on organizing the reds, yellows and oranges of<br />

Aged to Perfection: Elders & <strong>Art</strong> Making<br />

the act of creativity as life-giving and rejuvenating. Students will create three<br />

paintings over the two-day class that draws on a lifetime of rich experiences.<br />

The Beauty of Pencil & Brush<br />

Meet Our Instructors<br />

Mary Ellen Ashcroft is an English professor, Episcopal priest, retreat leader<br />

and writer. She has taught many writing classes, including creative nonfiction,<br />

fiction and environmental writing, as well as many literature courses. She is the<br />

author of a number of books including Dogspell: The Gospel According to Dog.<br />

Her passion is helping people look deeply into themselves to find meaning and<br />

authenticity.<br />

Kathleen Baleja is a visual multi-media, movement and performance artist. She<br />

studied with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, the Royal Conservatory of Music,<br />

and has attended numerous workshops. She enjoys using materials collected in her<br />

studio in unusual ways. In 1994, with quilter Judy Morningstar and weaver Elaine<br />

Rounds, Baleja created over 60 multi-media pieces, one of which was published<br />

in Fibre <strong>Art</strong>s Design Book Five. Kathleen has taught in schools, at the Thunder Bay<br />

<strong>Art</strong> Gallery and in the correctional system.<br />

Linda Bauer has a very eclectic interest in fiber, a flame she has carried for over<br />

50 years. Creative beadwork, bead embroidery and felt have come together in her<br />

most recent work often inspired and formed by the rocks of Lake Superior. She<br />

was a dancer/choreographer and taught dance for many years. In addition, she has<br />

a master’s degree in <strong>Art</strong> Education. You can see her work at regional arts festival<br />

and in The Garage in downtown <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>.<br />

Dorian Beaulieu has been a ceramics and sculpture instructor at Lake Superior<br />

College in Duluth since 1994. He provides instruction in ceramics, sculpture and<br />

3-D design. His education includes a MA in Studio Curriculum from University<br />

of Wisconsin Superior (USW) and a BFA in K-12 <strong>Art</strong> Education from University<br />

of Minnesota Duluth. He is currently pursuing an MA in art history from UWS.<br />

During the winter of 2006 he was an instructor at the Guangzhou Academy of<br />

Fine <strong>Art</strong> in Guangzhou, China.<br />

Hazel Belvo is an artist, master teacher and mentor. She has exhibited<br />

nationally and internationally for 50 years and her work is in many public<br />

collections including the Minneapolis Institute of <strong>Art</strong>s, the Bezalel Museum,<br />

the Dewitt Wallace Collection, MMM and General Mills. Hazel was a Radcliffe<br />

Institute Scholar and WARM Gallery member. She is a professor emeritus at<br />

Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design after 34 years of teaching. She has taught<br />

at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> for 30 years and was added to the plaque in the Founders Hall<br />

in appreciation of her long-time commitment.<br />

Peter Blau teaches adults and children in a variety of venues in the Twin Cities,<br />

including the Loft Literary Center. He recently received the Minneapolis/St. Paul<br />

Magazine’s volunteer award for his writing classes in a correctional facility for<br />

women. In his classes, Peter focuses on using writing as a pathway to creativity,<br />

self-discovery, and imagination. His goal is to provide a safe, confidential<br />

environment for students as they move through their own personal writing<br />

James Burke taught intaglio printmaking for 31 years at Louisiana State<br />

University in Baton Rouge, where he is currently professor emeritus. Burke<br />

has exhibited his prints extensively throughout his career in local and national<br />

exhibitions. His work is in many private collections as well as museums including<br />

the New Orleans Museum of <strong>Art</strong>, the LSU Museum of <strong>Art</strong> at the Shaw Center,<br />

and the Mint Museum of <strong>Art</strong>, among others.<br />

Tom Christiansen became interested in metal while witnessing his uncle repair<br />

implements. “It helped that it was kind of scary and you had to wear special stuff<br />

to do it,” he explains. Tom attended Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design and<br />

graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Minnesota. A fulltime<br />

artist since 1986, he established Last Chance Fabricating in Lutsen in 1994.<br />

He has completed commissions for garden installations, architectural elements,<br />

fountains, light fixtures, furniture and public sculpture.<br />

Julie Crabtree’s art background has given her the opportunity to develop<br />

stitchery work in a painterly manner. Utilizing the sewing machine, she draws<br />

freely over the canvas incorporating hand stitches, dyed threads, fabrics, beads<br />

and other experimental art techniques. Her love of the outdoors is reflected in<br />

her work, depicting woods, trees and other textured aspects of nature. Her work<br />

has been collected by individuals across the country and has won many awards at<br />

juried art shows in the Midwest, Southwest and East Coast.<br />

Bonnie Cutts, a Minnesota artist, was trained by Golden <strong>Art</strong>ist Colors in<br />

1998 for their Working <strong>Art</strong>ist Program. She has offered lectures and hands-on<br />

workshops throughout the Midwest since that time. She returns to share her<br />

wealth of information about acrylic materials and techniques. Bonnie’s artwork has<br />

been exhibited and collected nationally. She received a BFA from the University of<br />

Minnesota with a concentration in drawing and painting.<br />

Kelly Dupre is a <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> artist and author. Primarily a printmaker, her<br />

art can be seen at Sivertson Gallery and throughout the North Shore. Kelly has<br />

written and/or illustrated several children’s books including The Raven’s Gift, The<br />

Lion’s Share and Becoming a Boundary Waters Family. The natural environment<br />

and the art of indigenous cultures are her greatest influences. She loves teaching<br />

a variety of mediums and age levels. She strives for joy, symbolism and a dash of<br />

humor in her art.<br />

Kit Eastman is a textile artist from St. Paul, Minnesota. She makes decorative<br />

and functional objects, as well as art textiles, hand-painted in the Japanese<br />

tradition of katazome, or stencil dyeing, using a natural dye palette of soft, rich<br />

and subtle color on linen, cotton and silk. Her work celebrates daily meetings with<br />

the wild birds, plants and lake breezes of her urban surroundings. See a gallery of<br />

Joan Farnam was born in Duluth and spent part of her childhood living in<br />

Canada. She has an MA in Anthropology from California State University, East<br />

Bay. She began taking ceramic classes at the Duluth <strong>Art</strong> Institute in 1999 and has<br />

experience in wheel throwing, primitive firing, raku and majolica painting. She<br />

regularly teaches classes at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, where she is the Clay Studio Facilitator,<br />

and she writes a weekly blog, NorthShore <strong>Art</strong>Scene.<br />

Susan Frame, an American Sumi-e master, has been playing with ink for many<br />

years, specializing in contemporary and experimental techniques of painting and<br />

calligraphy. Her teachers include world renowned artists from the U.S., Japan,<br />

Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. Susan has received many awards for her work,<br />

which is included in museum, corporate, and private collections. She exhibits<br />

nationally and internationally including in New York, Paris, Japan, China, and<br />

Korea; teaches workshops in locations from Alaska to Guatemala; and writes books<br />

about sumi-e.<br />

Sharon Frykman is an artist in both oils and glass. She received her BFA in<br />

painting from the Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design. There she studied<br />

under Birney Quick and first came to the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> to teach in the summer<br />

of 1980. She began delving into stained glass in 1988. In 2000, she and her<br />

husband, Steve, attended warm-glass classes in Corning, NY. Together they<br />

specialize in architectural installations in glass, metal and wood through their<br />

business, Frykman <strong>Art</strong> Studio.<br />

Linda Gammell’s photographs have been exhibited and collected nationally.<br />

She is the recipient of many fellowships and grants, including the Bush <strong>Art</strong>ist<br />

Fellowship, McKnight Fellowship, and the Minnesota State <strong>Art</strong>s Board. Her art<br />

projects explore concepts of place, including the prairies of the Great Plains and<br />

the forests and water of Lake Superior. She has taught photography at various<br />

institutions, including Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design, Colorado College,<br />

St. Olaf College, Hamline University, and the College of Visual <strong>Art</strong>s.<br />

Sandi Pillsbury Gredzens is a North Shore artist and educator. She has<br />

a BFA from University of California Santa Cruz, and a Masters in Education<br />

from Hamline. Also, she has a K-6 multi-subject teaching license and a K-12 art<br />

education license. Sandi has been a practicing artist for 40+ years, has taken classes<br />

at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> for 26 years and now has taught at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> for five years.<br />

She is currently the board chair of the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>.<br />

Carolyn Halliday uses the vocabulary and skills of textiles to sculpt forms and<br />

2-D art that often reference body and/or nature. Primarily she hand knits wire<br />

and other nontraditional materials into forms that grow from simple elements<br />

of nature and life’s daily debris. She has exhibited in local and national juried<br />

shows for 15 years. Her work has been published in the book Knitting <strong>Art</strong>: 150<br />

Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary <strong>Art</strong>ists, Surface Design Journal, Interweave<br />

Knits, and Jaquard, an Italian Journal.<br />

David Hahn has always loved to draw. After two years at The Washington<br />

University School of Fine <strong>Art</strong>s, he worked at McDonnell Aircraft Corp. as a<br />

technical illustrator; the first of six companies. David and his wife Virginia retired<br />

to Hovland and he focused on painting water color landscapes. His work has<br />

shown at the CoHo Cafe, Johnson Heritage Post, Hovland <strong>Art</strong> Fair, Cook County<br />

High School Gym and at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>.<br />

Jeffrey Hirst is a painter/printmaker from Minneapolis. He received a BFA in<br />

printmaking from the University of Minnesota and a MFA in printmaking and<br />

painting from Louisiana State University. He has exhibited and given encaustic<br />

demonstrations and gallery talks throughout the United States at various<br />

conferences and universities. He has participated as a visiting artist at Normandale<br />

Community College in Bloomington, North Hennepin Community College in<br />

Brooklyn Center, and at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.<br />

Jim Horton has practiced and instructed printmaking and graphic design for 42<br />

years. His studio is in rural Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is an honorary member of<br />

the Society of Wood Engravers in England. Jim has a keen interest in the history<br />

and use of mechanical printing devices and processes. Jim learned wood engraving<br />

from the remnants of one of the last commercial engraving companies (Sander) in<br />

Chicago. Jim helped to found an international group called the Wood Engravers’<br />

Network.<br />

JD Jorgenson is originally from Bismarck, ND, and completed his degree at the<br />

University of Iowa. He then moved to Minneapolis where he taught at Northern<br />

Clay Center. Jorgenson received a Jerome Foundation Emerging <strong>Art</strong>ist Grant.<br />

After the grant, he apprenticed to Richard Bresnahan. Jorgenson presented at the<br />

International Wood-Fired Ceramics conference in Flagstaff in 2006 and in Duluth<br />

in 2007. Jorgenson Pottery was established in 2004.<br />

Matt Kania is a member of the <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>, the Northern<br />

Printmakers Alliance (Duluth) and the Highpoint Center for Printmaking<br />

(Minneapolis). Matt has exhibited his work at the Northern Prints Gallery, the<br />

Highpoint Center Gallery, Duluth <strong>Art</strong> Institute, <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong><br />

and the Bloomington <strong>Art</strong> Center. In recent years, he has focused on creating<br />

imagery using less toxic, portable printmaking techniques, such as polyester plate<br />

Karin Kraemer has a BFA in hot glass from St. Cloud State University and a<br />

MFA in ceramics from Southern Illinois University. She moved to Duluth several<br />

years ago after living all over the country, working and exploring, developing<br />

her work, making pottery and traveling. Karin loves to camp, garden and cook.<br />

These elements all come together in her work which celebrates everything from<br />

individual flowers in her garden to landscape, good friends and making food.<br />

Stephen Krasemann traveled the globe searching for wildlife with the<br />

Illustrations Division of the National Geographic Society. In 2001, he switched<br />

to painting full time and parked his easel between the Yukon Territory Mountains<br />

and the Lake Superior forests where he creates oil paintings from first-hand<br />

experiences. Stephen is a charter member of <strong>Art</strong>ists for Conservation and<br />

Worldwide Nature <strong>Art</strong>ists Group. His work is featured in public and private<br />

collections throughout the USA and Canada.<br />

Jo Ann Krause has a Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota<br />

and is a retired educator who taught elementary school and K-6 <strong>Art</strong>. She enjoys<br />

the experience of working with creative children of all ages during summer art<br />

sessions and private lessons. In her spare time she likes to work on printmaking,<br />

collage, jewelry, and fiber arts.<br />

Jeanne Larson has taught workshops and classes in both traditional watercolor<br />

and mixed watermedia/collage for many years in the Twin Cities and regional<br />

art centers. She’s been represented by several of the finest galleries in the region<br />

for over 20 years, has won awards and been a featured speaker for many arts<br />

organizations and societies. Her original paintings are included in corporate and<br />

private collections in homes and businesses in the USA and abroad.<br />

Gretchen Lisdahl started working with glass in 2002. Her first love was lampworking,<br />

and since has expanded her glass skills to stained and fused glass, mosaic<br />

and more. She has been working at Peachie’s Stained Glass for nine years. She<br />

considers herself blessed to continue to learn more about glass every day. Glass<br />

bead making continues to be her favorite media and she suspects it always will be.<br />

Dan Neff was born and raised in northeastern Minnesota. He took a<br />

Community Education class on torch-working glass followed by a two-year<br />

apprenticeship program learning the basics of the craft. After completing his<br />

apprenticeship, Dan began demonstrating his torch-working at festivals and fineart<br />

shows. After finishing his undergraduate studies at University of Minnesota,<br />

Duluth, Dan traveled around the country to learn from world-renowned glass<br />

marble artists such as John Kobuki and Gateson Recko.<br />

Judd Nelson has been creating forged and welded sculptures since he was 17<br />

and completed his formal training in art at the University of Minnesota. He has<br />

taught at the Minneapolis Institute of <strong>Art</strong>s as well as in Native American and<br />

public schools around the country. Judd also worked as a lead builder at Home<br />

Jon Neuse’s basic principles of art are experimentation and artistic judgment.<br />

Most of his imagery is abstracted from remembered landscape. He manipulates<br />

formal artistic elements to force competing images into lasting and taut<br />

relationships. “It’s difficult to make abstract art,” he says, “because there are no<br />

– nor should there be – definite rules for how to proceed. For me, art without<br />

playfulness is not serious art.” Neuse has been teaching art to adults for the past<br />

35 years.<br />

Sally Nystrom graduated from St. Catherine’s College. She furthered her<br />

studies with extensive classes in art history. She began teaching in 1996 in a<br />

private studio with Sally Brown (a WARM founder) and on her own, including<br />

for the University of Minnesota’s Split Rock program for 16 years. When Sally is<br />

not teaching, she works on a series of figurative oil paintings. She shows her work<br />

in Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is part of “The Rain Collective,” a professional<br />

artist group.<br />

Kimber Olson creates art textiles from various materials that she dyes, prints<br />

and paints. She’s worked exclusively with cloth since 1997 when she discovered<br />

the practice of surface design. Intense color, unique patterns and rich textures<br />

are hallmarks of her work, which has been exhibited locally and regionally. She<br />

recently completed a master’s degree in theology and art at United Theological<br />

Seminary where her studies explored the intersections of art, creativity and<br />

consciousness.<br />

Mary Pettis has been recognized as an eloquent and respected teacher.<br />

Classically trained, she has taught for 35 years in Wisconsin, Minnesota,<br />

Tuscany, Venice, France, and for Plein Air Painters of Hawaii in Maui. She has<br />

been juried into, and won, awards in national painting events and exhibitions<br />

in New York City to Scottsdale and Maui. Mary has exhibited at the Palais de<br />

Joanne Price is a Minnesota artist specializing in relief printmaking. In<br />

addition to exhibiting work internationally, Price was the recipient of the<br />

2009–2010 Jerome Book <strong>Art</strong>s Fellowship grant through the Minnesota Center<br />

for Book <strong>Art</strong>s (MCBA). She worked at Highpoint Center for Printmaking for<br />

more than seven years and organizes exhibits for the Wood Engravers’ Network.<br />

Currently, Mrs. Price teaches Printmaking and Typography at Augsburg College<br />

and is the Exhibitions Manager for the MCBA.<br />

Jerry Riach owned and operated The Raven Gallery in Minneapolis for<br />

10 years. He studied drawing at the Edina <strong>Art</strong> Center and printmaking at<br />

Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design, Highpoint Center for Printmaking and<br />

with Charles Beck. Jerry now lives in Little <strong>Marais</strong>, where he has a printmaking<br />

studio. His work is mostly inspired by nature and includes etching, drypoint,<br />

woodblock, wood engraving, and collagraph printmaking as well as drawing.<br />

Jayne Richards grew up in <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong> and completed her BFA from<br />

University of Minnesota, Duluth. Her Rock Series in pastel and acrylic have<br />

shown at the Johnson Heritage Post. She also shows her work at the <strong>Grand</strong><br />

<strong>Marais</strong> <strong>Art</strong> Festival. She taught graphic design at the Minnesota School of<br />

Business and currently works as a free-lance graphic designer, doing volunteer<br />

work for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and graphic support for the WJ Thom<br />

Company Promo Products.<br />

Sue Robinson is an artist, commercial illustrator, and educator. Her passion<br />

for the natural world is reflected in her project choices, such as illustrating the<br />

flora and fauna of the Everglades and Dry Tortugas for the US Park Service.<br />

She created “The Superior Experience” for the US Superior National Forest and<br />

illustrated two books on the Boundary Waters by Michael Furtman. For 15<br />

years, Sue taught middle school/high school visual art. She delights in guiding<br />

students on their path toward “personal voice.”<br />

Karen Rognsvoog has been dyeing natural fibers and growing plants for dye<br />

since the mid 1970s. She’s always been interested in the colors of nature. Boiling<br />

plants, weeds, flowers and bark for use with fibers became a passion. Rognsvoog<br />

teaches at various art and craft centers in Minnesota and Wisconsin including<br />

the North House Folk School and Minnetonka Center for the <strong>Art</strong>s. She is a<br />

professional pianist, teaches piano lessons and watercolor painting.<br />

Kathi “Peachie” Schmid started her obsession with stained glass in 1984. In<br />

1991, she turned her obsession into a career by opening Peachie’s Stained Glass.<br />

She has taken professional classes in every facet of hot and cold glass working,<br />

and continues her education every chance she gets. Glass fusing particularly<br />

excites her because of the limitless projects that can be made. There is always<br />

something new to create!<br />

Nancy Seaton loves color and light. She received her BA from St. Olaf<br />

College where she focused on watercolor and blown glass. The <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>’s<br />

warm glass studio is a great resource she feels lucky to have as part of her life.<br />

She lives on the Gunflint Trail with her husband and two boys.<br />

Shawn Sheehy combines paper engineering and papermaking with an interest<br />

in biology and cultural evolution to produce sculptural pop-up books. Shawn<br />

has taught workshops at PBI, Penland, the Center for the Book <strong>Art</strong>s in Chicago<br />

and New York, and many other venues across the U.S. His commercial pop-up<br />

clients include American Greetings, PeeWee Herman and Vintage Magazine. To<br />

Kathleen Sheridan is a self-taught origamist. She began folding in the<br />

fourth grade and is now a regular at national conventions and has origami<br />

friends across the globe. She runs a local group of folders, gives origami<br />

demonstrations and teaches summer camp origami classes for children. When<br />

asked why origami is such a passion, Kathleen says that after all these years of<br />

folding, it is still so amazing to her that something so beautiful can come from a<br />

piece of paper.<br />

Neil Sherman is primarily a plein air artist. He is the past board chair of the<br />

<strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> and the current chair of the Events Committee. Before moving to<br />

<strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>, Neil was a classroom monitor for Joe Paquet at the Hurinenko<br />

and Paquet Studio, assisting with critiques for beginner and advanced students.<br />

Neil received his BA from St. John’s University and studied at the Minnesota<br />

River School of Fine <strong>Art</strong>s and the Hurinenko and Paquet Studio.<br />

Liz Sivertson credits her dad, Howard Sivertson, for her most valuable<br />

training in art. She credits her sister, Jan Sivertson (owner of Sivertson Gallery),<br />

as the one who “made a career out of it (art)” by selling over 800 of Liz’s original<br />

paintings to private collectors. Liz’s colorful acrylics illustrate a children’s book<br />

by Reeve Lindbergh, titled North Country Spring. Liz has a Bachelor of Fine <strong>Art</strong>s<br />

degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.<br />

Lisa Stauffer received a Masters in Design from the University of Minnesota<br />

and studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design. She has worked and taught<br />

in a wide variety of media; now she primarily focuses on soft pastel with a<br />

special focus on painting “en plein air” to indulge her fascination with light and<br />

color in the beautiful North Shore landscape. Lisa was awarded Master Circle<br />

status by the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2009.<br />

Laura Stone began doing mosaics after a chance visit to the St. Louis Basilica,<br />

which has an extensive mosaic interior. She found the media to be a way to<br />

merge 30 years of drawing with her passion for stone and glass. Underlying<br />

her work is an ongoing fascination for natural dynamics including weather,<br />

water, geology, plant biology, psychology, and spirit. She has been on the faculty<br />

of Gustavus Adolphus College, Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and Design and<br />

teaches private workshops.<br />

Tod Sylvester grew up near the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong> and spent endless hours watching<br />

the founders lecture and produce art. In 1977, he was awarded a scholarship to<br />

work with founder Birney Quick in watercolors. He is a tile setter by trade and<br />

has incorporated artful mosaics into his commercial and residential jobs. He has<br />

also created and donated many mosaic pieces, most recently to WTIP radio and<br />

the Trout Lake Lodge.<br />

Peggy Thompson (who paints under the name of Margaret Carroll) completed<br />

her BFA and MFA at the School of the <strong>Art</strong> Institute of Chicago. Peggy has had<br />

numerous exhibits of her paintings throughout the region, including Chicago and<br />

in Australia. She began an arts program for elders which has been very successful<br />

and is now known statewide.<br />

Michael Tonder has been designing, producing and selling glass art work since<br />

the mid 1980s. He has traveled extensively doing both indoor and outdoor art fairs<br />

in the Midwest and southeast parts of the United States.<br />

Laurie Toth received a BA in painting from Minneapolis College of <strong>Art</strong> and<br />

Design where she studied under Birney Quick and attended the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>,<br />

where she fell in love with landscape painting. Laurie’s primary medium is soft<br />

pastel and she makes her own sticks to augment the sets purchased. Laurie lives<br />

in Minneapolis and has 30 years of teaching experience at many of the local art<br />

centers. Laurie is currently illustrating a series of fictional historical short stories.<br />

Todd Voss was born and raised in Davenport, IA. In 1990, he received a BFA in<br />

oil painting from Maharishi International University, in Fairfield, IA. Todd lived for<br />

10 years on the North Shore, and now divides his time between there and Detroit<br />

Lakes. For over 20 years, Todd has painted the Upper Midwest landscape, as a fulltime<br />

artist, both outdoors and in the studio. He is represented by Sivertson Gallery<br />

and Fine Line Designs Gallery.<br />

Ann Ward received an art degree from Winona State University. She apprenticed<br />

with potter Jim Russell and then spent eight years working with potter Lynette<br />

Power. She lives in <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>, and is part of the group known as “The <strong>Art</strong><br />

<strong>Colony</strong> Potters.” Ann has shown work at the Johnson Heritage Post, Cross River<br />

Heritage Center and Betsy Bowen’s Studio. You can find her pottery for sale at the<br />

farmers’ market during the summer in downtown <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong>.<br />

Erik Waterkotte received his MFA from the University of Alberta and his BFA<br />

from Illinois State University. Waterkotte has shown his prints both nationally and<br />

internationally. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of <strong>Art</strong><br />

at Minnesota State University Mankato and was a Visiting Assistant Professor in<br />

Printmaking at Indiana University, Bloomington. Waterkotte has been a visiting<br />

artist at universities throughout the US and the recipient of a Minnesota State <strong>Art</strong>s<br />

Board Emerging <strong>Art</strong>ist Initiative Grant.<br />

Tom Westbrook is a teacher, designer, writer, artist, and craftsman. He studied<br />

<strong>Art</strong> History, Studio <strong>Art</strong>s and Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Currently<br />

he teaches at the University of Minnesota focusing on humanitarian and sustainable<br />

design and at the College of Visual <strong>Art</strong> where he teaches a visual geometry class. In<br />

addition to teaching and writing he is founding partner of realize, llc., a design and<br />

fabrication firm providing services to the design industry.<br />

Melissa Wickwire finds that teaching often inspires her own artwork and her<br />

artwork informs her teaching. She especially enjoys sharing her love of clay. Melissa<br />

studied ceramics and art education in upstate New York and taught art at a public<br />

school in Wyoming for six years before heading to the North Shore. When Melissa<br />

is not working as the Cook County Youth Coordinator you will find her with her<br />

family or in the Clay Studio at the <strong>Art</strong> <strong>Colony</strong>.<br />

Jo Wood is an award-winning bead and fiber artist who has practiced her skills<br />

for more than 40 years. Her “bead paintings” are a celebration of place, inspired by<br />

nature and life in northern Minnesota. She shares her passion for bead embroidery<br />

by teaching regionally and nationally. Jo’s beaded landscapes have appeared in<br />

various publications and juried exhibits. Her work is represented by several galleries<br />

Joyce Yamamoto is a mixed-media collage artist who trains artists to be entrepreneurs.<br />

She believes artists who serve as resource people are community builders in<br />

the broadest sense. The transformation process is what fuels her creativity. She sees<br />

these transformations everywhere; paper plus paint become a painting, words plus<br />

paper fragments become a collage, clay plus high heat become pottery, and artists<br />

plus information become entrepreneurial.<br />
