Japanese Clay Techniques<br />

In this class, students will learn the traditional<br />

aspects of Japanese pottery. Throwing techniques<br />

covered will include throwing off the hump,<br />

coiling and paddling. Students will have an<br />

opportunity to try the Japanese style Karatsu Kick Wheel as well as practicing<br />

various decorating techniques such as kohiki, dipped white slip, hakime, brushed<br />

slip, mishima, carving and slip inlay, sgraffito, iron painting and handles using<br />

rattan and jute. JD will provide hand-dug clay for students to experience.<br />

Guided Studio Time<br />

Bring in an unfinished painting or drawing project<br />

or start a new one, and benefit from Todd’s 21 years<br />

of experience as a professional artist, to encourage,<br />

inspire and guide you, one-on-one, through the process. Students will work<br />

individually, at their own pace, in a creative small group atmosphere. Emphasis<br />

will be on problem-solving, strengthening fundamental skills, and achieving<br />

your goals. Each day will include short group discussions covering materials,<br />

techniques, experiences, etc.<br />

Introduction to Outdoor<br />

Interested in painting outdoors, but never picked<br />

up a paint brush? This class is for you, as we<br />

discuss the basic elements of plein air painting<br />

such as looking past the leaves, twigs and branches<br />

to paint a convincing forest, tips on mixing colors, materials and gear. Class will<br />

also cover artistic lingo like perspective, form, and value. Scenic <strong>Grand</strong> <strong>Marais</strong><br />

will be the outdoor subject and class structure will include short demonstrations,<br />

painting time and feedback at your easel.<br />

Mentored II<br />

Hazel Belvo<br />

July 30-August 3: 5 days<br />

Tuition: $475<br />

In this workshop, artists work in the<br />

medium of their choice under the close<br />

mentorship of Hazel Belvo. This class is<br />

for practicing artists who have produced a body of work in a particular medium.<br />

Much like a “Master Class” setting, students will explore the artist within,<br />

elaborating on their own personal imagery. There will be group dialogue with<br />

specific topics that are critical to the artistic process and a final critique.<br />

Adventures in Wheel-throwing<br />

Dorian Beaulieu<br />

August 6-10: 5 days<br />

Tuition: $475 / Supply Fee: $30<br />

This exciting class includes beginning to advanced<br />

wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques using<br />

stoneware and raku clay with under glazes, slips and<br />

commercial glazes. Marbleizing technique, mishima,<br />

sgraffito, texture, dry brush and resist decorative<br />

methods will be explored. The class will include<br />

technical demonstrations on clay construction, decorative methods and clay<br />

stamp-making exercise. Introductory information on kiln loading and firing<br />

processes will also be discussed. To learn the coil method, students will collaborate<br />

on a group vessel.<br />

Slumping & Sagging Glass<br />

Day 1 & 2: 9am-4pm, Day 3: 9am-noon<br />

Tuition: $190 / Supply Fee: $75<br />

Explore slumping techniques in clay molds and<br />

sagging through a drop ring. Participants will<br />

have the opportunity to complete two small 3-D<br />

glass pieces while learning the “how-to’s” of fusing<br />

and firing a kiln. No experience necessary.<br />

Collagraph Printmaking<br />

August 11-12: 2 days<br />

Collagraph is a low-tech, high-fun process that<br />

involves the creation of a printmaking plate or<br />

matrix from a variety of complex textures and<br />

marks. Using pressed cardboard, acrylic gel medium and various other media,<br />

we will easily create plates that yield complex results when run through a press.<br />

Students will learn basic collagraph platemaking as well as intaglio and relief<br />

printing, and multiple-page registration. For the beginner to advanced printmaker.<br />

Mentorship in Printmaking<br />

Join Louisiana State University professor James<br />

Burke for this mentorship-styled class focused on<br />

printmaking. Through the support of your instructor,<br />

follow your personal muse to a new, exciting place, or<br />

seek a different creative direction. Students can work in<br />

their printing technique of choice and the instructor will provide daily, individual<br />

input along with facilitated group discussion. View the week as an opportunity<br />

to try new ideas, react to a different point of view or find renewed energy for the<br />

creative process.<br />

Katazome: Japanese Stencil Dye<br />

August 18-19: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $190 / Supply Fee: $28<br />

Explore this centuries-old Japanese surface design<br />

technique that incorporates elements of both<br />

printmaking and painting using simple, nontoxic<br />

materials. Students will design and cut stencils, apply a rice paste resist onto silk<br />

and cotton, and then paint them with natural pigments. Students will come away<br />

with a basic understanding of the materials and techniques of this beautiful textile<br />

tradition. Creations can be incorporated into quilting and/or wearable art projects.<br />

Wood Engraving<br />

August 18-19: 2 days<br />

Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $39<br />

Detailed drawings get a delicate graphic makeover<br />

with wood engraving’s distinctly intimate and bold<br />

characteristics. This intensive two-day class will<br />

familiarize artists with the tools, materials and printing process of wood engraving<br />

resulting in an editioned print. Students will learn to transform black and white<br />

images into various textures to express a full range of value. A print exchange at<br />

the class end will provide a start for your own wood engraving collection.<br />
