October - November Aged to Perfection: Elders & Art Making Peggy Thompson October 4-5: 2 half days: 9am-noon Tuition: $75 / Supply Fee: $11 This class is based partly on research that proves the older one gets, the more creative they become. People in their 70s, 80s and 90s are discovering new gifts like painting, woodcarving or writing poetry. This class will focus on watercolor to explore the process of creativity within each individual student while experiencing the act of creativity as life-giving and rejuvenating. Students will create three paintings over the two-day class that draws on a lifetime of rich experiences. The Beauty of Pencil & Brush David Hahn October 6-7: 2 days Tuition: $150 There is nothing more basic and beautiful than working with the pencil and brush. In this class, we will examine these two instruments and their proper use as we apply them to watercolor still life and landscape painting. Emphasis will be made on layout and drawing with pencil before applying the brush. David will lead step by step as student and instructor draw and paint together. There will also be plenty of time to work individually. Open Visual Arts Studio October 16-December 18: 10 Tuesdays: 6-9pm Pre-register: $5/session Drop-in Fee: $10/session The best time to work is when you don’t feel like working! Sometimes working is easier when you’ve got someone to do it with. Think of this open studio as if you were meeting a friend on the Croftville Road for a walk or run. The goal is to commit to an evening of art making, amongst the fellowship of other artists, and start the project you’ve been putting off or finish the one you started. The Founders Hall will be open for artists to come and work. Bring your own materials and supplies. At least two people must be pre-registered per session to host Open Visual Arts Studio. Autumn in Pastel Lisa Stauffer October 13-14 & 15 (optional): 2 or 3 days Tuition: $150/$225 / Supply Fee: Varies Autumn on the North Shore is a magical season to capture in pastels. We will set up still life items with a fall theme, and experience how these studies apply to painting all subject matter. Bring photos of fall landscape or seasonal harvest with high contrast to use for composing a painting. Class time will include painting basics, demos and group critiques. A variety of pastels and papers will be available for purchase. Beyond Centering: Intermediate Pottery Melissa Wickwire October 29-December 17: 8 Mondays: 6-8pm Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $30 Students comfortable with centering and ready to explore the pottery wheel at an intermediate level will enjoy this class. Basic forms will be reviewed and experimentation with sculptural elements and creative surface design will be encouraged. Class time will include demonstrations and guided independent work time and a variety of relevant artwork will be presented. Bring ideas of specific projects you’d like to create or just practice and explore. This class includes 24-hour access to the clay studio during the session. Mat Your Art Neil Sherman October 11: 6-9pm Tuition: $40 / Supply Fee: $11 Mosaic Art Tod Sylvester October 11-November 1: 4 Thursdays: 6-8pm Tuition: $75 / Supply Fee: $22 This evening workshop will focus on the basics of mounting and matting artwork, specifically works on paper. Instruction on how to cut mats using the mat cutter, as well as specific mounting methods will be discussed. Each student should bring an image on paper to mat (approximately 8” x 10”). This class is a requirement to use the Art Colony mat Learn the basics of creating your own mosaic in this introductory, four-week class. Create a picture, garden rock, deco-mirror, flower pot or vase, you choose. We will discuss everything from your base, glues, grouts, design layout, using a tile saw, materials and more. Students will take home one finished mosaic and be ready for your own projects. Caution: Sharp Edges! Pots for Presents Joan Farnam October 30-December 18: 8 Tuesdays: 6-8pm Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $30 This fun eight-week class is perfect for the beginning to intermediate potter who wants to make lots of stoneware pots for gifts and/or their own shelves. You’ll learn wheel and hand-building techniques, as well as explore colorful glazes. Kiln loading and firing will also be covered. This class is always bundles of fun. This class includes 24-hour access to the clay studio during the session. Felted Ornaments Linda Bauer November 10: 1-4pm Tuition: $40 / Supply Fee: $17 Students will create at least one holiday ornament, which could also be turned into a pin or necklace element, using needle-felting techniques. Natural fiber rovings and basic graphic principles will lay the foundation for your work. You will learn how to embellish your design using beads, buttons, embroidery thread or special charms. Holiday Cards Kelly Dupre November 10-11: 2 days Tuition: $150 / Supply Fee: $28 Give your very own handmade greeting cards this holiday season. Students will learn how to make single and/or multi-colored prints in the form of a card. Let your creativity run away as you turn your own images into printed masterpieces. All skill levels are welcome to join the fun of hand printing and using the Vandercook printing press. A variety of ways to use the relief printing medium will be explored as creativity leaps in honor of the holiday Glass Holiday Ornaments Sharon Frykman & Nancy Seaton November 17: 1 day Tuition: $75 / Supply Fee: $40 Add color and light to your holiday season with your own glass holiday ornaments. Experiment with colored glass, frit and kiln-carving to create multiple ornaments. The kilncarving technique uses shapes cut with scissors from fiber paper. The glass is then melted over your images to achieve a beautiful, intricate design with little glass cutting required. Youth Classes Pencil Drawing for Kids : ages 7-11 David Hahn February 28-March 20: 4 Tuesdays: 3:15-5:15pm Tuition: $25 Join Grandpa David Hahn to learn the basics of drawing in this fun, introductory four-week class. Together we will draw a variety of still life objects while working on different drawing techniques including 3-D, realism, still life, and landscape. Drawing is the foundation of all art media, so jump-in and build skills that will last a lifetime. Young Adult Clay: ages 12-18 Melissa Wickwire March 2-23: 4 Fridays: 3:15-5:15pm Tuition: $25 Students will explore the ceramic process while having fun and sharing ideas in this class designed specifically for young adults. The primary focus will be on hand-building and using the pottery wheel to create finished pieces. The first three classes will focus on building and the last class will be dedicated to glazing work. For beginners and those with experience, all will build their pottery skills. Youth Masterpieces Sandi Pillsbury Gredzens June 11-13: 3 half days Session 1 (ages 5-8): 9am-noon Session 2 (ages 9-12): 1-4pm Tuition: $115 / Supply Fee: $17 Together we will explore various famous artists, their unique styles and paintings. We will use this knowledge as a springboard to create our own masterpieces, using a variety of media: collage, watercolor, oil pastel, and acrylic paint. Students will learn about the language of art: the elements and principles that make a work of art come to life. November & Youth Classes Youth Summer Art : ages 7-12 July 27-August 17: 4 Fridays: 10am-noon Pre-register: $60 Drop-in Fee: $20/session High-quality art instruction by a rotating roster of local artists will be hosted in the professional Art Colony studios. Each Friday, students will receive an introduction to a different art medium including clay, glass, printmaking and watercolor. All materials are provided. Young Adult Drawing : ages 12-18 David Hahn September 25-October 16: 4 Tuesdays: 3:15-5:15pm Tuition: $25 Take a trip through the art of drawing and watercolor painting as we explore still life, portraiture and landscapes. First draw it and then make it come alive with color. Bring a good pointed #10 brush, #HB or softer pencil and an eraser, we’ll provide the paper and paints. You’ll love what you’ll learn.
