Providence—the capital of and largest
city in Rhode Island—features a dramatic
setting in which residential neighborhoods
on surrounding hills overlook the
waterfront of Narragansett Bay. During
industrialization, railways and highways
pierced the city and the resulting districts
developed distinct, yet complementary,
identities. To reinvigorate this postindustrial
New England city, Providence
2020 celebrates each district’s historical
and architectural attributes while
creating greater unity among them. The
plan sets forth a flexible framework for
development and encourages a network
of pedestrian-friendly streets within
former industrial lands and highway cort
