work towards the social justice required to achieve<br />

true reconciliation. Events and activities organized<br />

throughout the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> region by local<br />

reconciliation groups have an incremental effect in<br />

building support for the reconciliation process among<br />

the non-<strong>Aboriginal</strong> population. Their role is to:<br />

• promote to the wider community an<br />

understanding of, and respect for, <strong>Aboriginal</strong><br />

and Torres Strait Islander cultures<br />

• encourage the local <strong>Aboriginal</strong> community<br />

to communicate with the wider population<br />

regarding the contemporary issues that affect<br />

them as individuals, families and communities in<br />

the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> region<br />

• encourage in the wider community the<br />

development of positive attitudes towards<br />

Indigenous Australians.<br />

Key Objectives<br />

In regard to educational outcomes for <strong>Aboriginal</strong><br />

people and increased cross-cultural awareness, our<br />

objectives are:<br />

• Encourage involvement of <strong>Aboriginal</strong> residents<br />

of <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> in educational decisionmaking<br />

processes<br />

•<br />

Seek equality of access to education services<br />

for <strong>Aboriginal</strong> children, youth and adults in the<br />

<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> region<br />

• Assist in the promotion of Local <strong>Aboriginal</strong><br />

Education Consultative Groups in the region<br />

and encourage partnership programs with local<br />

schools<br />

• Assist in <strong>Aboriginal</strong> student participation in<br />

<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> Institute of TAFE<br />

• Provide vocational guidance & support for<br />

students at Biala Hostel<br />

• Implement strategies to enhance<br />

communication, leadership and direction for<br />

local Reconciliation groups, networks and<br />

<strong>Aboriginal</strong> Support Groups<br />

• Support the process of Reconciliation in order<br />

to:<br />

• the wider community’s understanding of,<br />

and respect for, <strong>Aboriginal</strong> and Torres Strait<br />

Islander cultures<br />

• improved communication between<br />

<strong>Aboriginal</strong> and non-<strong>Aboriginal</strong> communities,<br />

and especially to improve awareness of<br />

contemporary issues affecting <strong>Aboriginal</strong><br />

people in the region and beyond<br />

• in the wider community the development<br />

of informed and positive attitudes towards<br />

<strong>Aboriginal</strong> Australians.<br />
