I found that the sections would go together<br />
easier if I used a tapered nne-up pin, available<br />
from Rohn at big bucks or local hardware<br />
stores lor much less. Oddly enough. I was told<br />

know what this tapered pin was, or il they did<br />
know what it was they did nol sell it and instead<br />
suggested the local hardware store. Why the<br />

legs win never Une up without divine intervention.<br />
No reflection on Heights here; this<br />
happens with them all.<br />
There ere 100 many things thai have 10 line<br />
up perfectly on top of a lower for it 10 work easily<br />
with a slightly canted tower under assembly.<br />
We really appreciated Heights' use of captive<br />
nuts instead of nuts with separate lock wash·<br />
ers. One less piece of hardware to drop, right?<br />
I did quickly leam that belore putting a captive<br />
nut on a bolt, the bolt must be clean. Any dirt<br />
on the bolt threads tends to seize the nut so it<br />
cannot be further tightened or removed. Now<br />
would be a good time to advise that you preacquire<br />
several spare bolls and nuts when<br />
starting the construction, Actually, I caused part<br />
of my own problem at first, since the lirst dirty<br />
• bolt I encountered was fouled with the joint<br />
compound I was using. I used an aluminum-toaluminum<br />
;oint ~g rease- between section legs<br />
to prevent corrosion, improve conductivity, and<br />
facilitate future disassembly. These compounds<br />
contain finely ground aluminum powder in a<br />
lubricating base, and wor1I: fine until you get the<br />
compound between a bolt threads and a captive<br />
nul.<br />
By now your new gleaming lower is up and<br />
ready lor antennas. I'll leave thai to other articles.<br />
Just one last piece of inlormation you now<br />
need to stay sane: All sell-supporting towers,<br />
and especially long lall ones, will "wigg le .~ If<br />
you get bothered by waves when 00 a boat,<br />
you may notice this effect more than others.<br />
The motion of the tower al the top is actuaRy<br />
very slight. but will be definitely noticeable<br />
when you are up there. The tower is much<br />
stronger when it can wiggle with the wind a lillie<br />
instead 01 trying to stay rigid, It's lunny; the<br />
tower looks shorter hom the ground up than<br />
when you are on top looking down. Maybe this<br />
is a result of the tapered design?<br />
If you've done it right so far, you now have a<br />
marvelous tower to support your OX dreams,<br />
and wtVch win make a great, neighbor-pleasing<br />
Christmas light display support. I've put up a<br />
Iol 01 different towers over the years, and I am<br />
quite favorably impressed wilh the Heights<br />
product. Youcan't go wrong with this company's<br />
customer rereucnsc-rve never seen anyone<br />
friendlier or more cooperative than Drake<br />
