Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends
GOSPEL VALUE ~ INCLUSION
Catholic Education Week 2012 – Celebrating Community – Family, Parish, School! Officially, the week
began on Sunday and I witnessed several examples of our community celebrating together. Joining with
the parish of St Mary MacKillop, students and staff from St Margaret Mary‟s participated in the Mass on
Sunday morning. Ms Brickhill and two students (Swetha Hickman (Year 11) and Emma Gulliver
(Year 9) assisted by leading Children‟s Liturgy.
Later that morning, I joined the staff, families and students at Riverway for the SMMC and IPC regatta –
the day was glorious and the rowing was exciting. But what struck me most was the spirit of teamwork
and „pitching in‟ that was evident. We are fortunate at SMMC that there are dedicated supporters of the
sport of rowing and they all contribute to make it a success. Well done!
I had the very great privilege of joining with colleagues from Townsville Catholic Education for dinner on
Sunday evening with General Peter Cosgrove, the Ambassador for Catholic Education Week. He spoke
passionately about the spirit of community that is present in our Catholic schools. General Cosgrove
says the Catholic faith is like a „glue binding communities together.‟ “People of faith should rejoice in a
strong sense of community and nurture these attitudes wherever they find them,” he said. “We should
acknowledge that these values are not just „Australian‟, they‟re also Christian.” “Even those in our
community who profess themselves to be without hope. We know that they are God‟s creatures and
they‟re part of our community.
The special Mass at the Cathedral to open our school week was well attended and demonstrated the
strength in the spirit that permeates our Diocese. At the Director‟s Luncheon that followed, I was able
to congratulate Mrs Lyn Horner on her nomination for a Spirit of Catholic Education Award. Lyn will be
acknowledged by our community on Friday‟s special assembly.
Very fittingly, the beginning of our week also sees the Year 12 students on their annual retreat. Mrs
Whittaker, Mrs Trevethan and the teachers of Religion and Ethics combine with the NET Ministry Team to
explore with our students their spirituality. As these senior students consider their future and the everapproaching
end of their secondary schooling, it is important that they reflect on their faith and the
values that we exhibit in our daily interactions. I trust that our community has been able to encourage
and nurture these students throughout their five years here.
Plans are well underway for the Performing Arts Gala on Friday 31 st August at the Mary MacKillop Centre,
Kirwan. Please keep the date free and plan on attending to support the students and staff. More
information will be forthcoming and tickets will go on sale soon.
It is an exciting time for our Year 10 students as they consider their senior course of study. SET
planning interviews will take place in August and it is expected that all students and parents will confer
with a staff representative to confirm the subject choices. The entire process of determining lines and
subject offerings is complex and every effort is made to accommodate student choice.
Great news! Sunday, 12 th August is the special Mass at Holy Trinity Church, when St Margaret Mary‟s
College will assist through the music, reading and Eucharistic ministries. Bella Voce is expected to be
present and lend their beautiful voice to the sacred music. I urge all families to make an effort to join
with us on this occasion. To be a genuine Catholic community, there is a need for prayer and liturgy to
share in our faith. Please come! Sunday, 12 th August at 8am at Holy Trinity Church. Immediately
following the Mass there will be a fun-day for the families, as we celebrate the feast of St Mary
MacKillop. YCS will be convening a display and spreading the word about the good work that they do.
Congratulations to our Vicki Wilson Netball team!! They are the Regional winners and will now compete
in Brisbane for the State Titles in October! Many thanks to their coach, Ms Merilyn Stanley for her work
with the team and to the players ~ Well Done! Such Maggie Spirit!
Have a great week everyone!
SMMC SPIRIT OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION AWARD NOMINEE
LYN HORNER
The St Margaret Mary‟s College community nominated LYN HORNER for a Spirit of Catholic Education Award for
2012. Lyn‟s interest in and passion for her faith and the Catholic Church has been a lifetime journey. From her
own involvement in YCS and then YCW, Lyn pursued her vocation as a teacher in various Catholic Schools in
the Townsville Diocese, then took on the responsibility as APRE at St Joseph‟s Catholic School, Mundingburra.
Retirement from teaching certainly did not mean a slowing down of pace, or a less than fervent passion for
involvement in the Catholic Church, and in particular the ministry of Catholic education.
Currently, Lyn is the Pastoral Leader for St Mary MacKillop Parish, Mundingburra and has been in this role for
more than 12 years. For the past few years, Lyn has been working in collaboration with Priest in Residence,
Father Peter Quilty. The parish includes an early learning centre, a primary and a secondary school. Through
her passion and drive, the communities are united and form the St Mary MacKillop Catholic Community.
As Parish Pastoral Leader, Lyn is
responsible for and involved in a vast
number of committees and programs. Lyn‟s
job is far beyond „normal‟ hours of
employment. From the usual Parish
responsibilities of Sacramental programs,
RCIA, weddings, Baptisms, funerals, Parish
Council, Finance and maintenance to name
but a few, Lyn has been the driving force
behind moving the Parish in a new
direction. Lyn is acutely aware of the need
to develop a welcoming atmosphere in the
parish and the formation of the Parish
Stewardship Committee and a re-formation
of the Parish Council has meant that more
parishioners are feeling encouraged to
share their gifts with the wider Parish
community. The newly formed Parish Choir
is evidence that there is energy and passion
for a vibrant worshipping community at St
Mary MacKillop Parish. Each year, working
in conjunction with representatives from
each school and the early learning centre,
Lyn sends a letter home with all new
students welcoming them to the Parish. The
very multi-cultural dimension to parish life
which has really flourished in recent years
is also a reflection of this all-inclusive,
Christian experience which is Lyn‟s life.
Lyn‟s association with St Margaret Mary‟s
College has been a long, very generous
one. Lyn taught at St Margaret Mary‟s
Primary School for several years, sent her
own daughters to St Margaret Mary‟s
College and has been a valuable member of
the College Board now for many years. Her
wise counsel and deep faith continue to
contribute to the development of this
learning organisation. Her infectious laugh
and great sense of humour ensure that
everyone she encounters is left feeling
enriched.
The theme of Catholic Education week -
Celebrating Community ~ Family ~ Parish
~ School - embodies the life, work and
love of Lyn Horner and she is deserving of
recognition of her outstanding career in
Catholic Education.
SMMC STUDENTS ACKNOWLEDGE THE START OF
CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Last Sunday, Swetha Hickman
and Emma Gulliver ably assisted
me to run Children‟s Liturgy at
8.00am Mass in our Parish of St
Mary MacKillop. A small group of
children gathered in the Parish
Centre at the beginning of Mass to
hear the gospel reading of the day,
to talk about what it means for
them to be like sheep cared for by
our Shepherd, Jesus and to do an
activity based on this discussion.
My sincere thanks to Swetha and
Emma, members of our College
Vinnies group, for being an example
of the Catholic Education Week
theme this year – Celebrating
Community – Parish, School and
Family.
On Monday, students of 8.4 represented the College at Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral when Bishop
Michael officially launched Catholic Education Week 2012. Students from Catholic Schools in and around
Townsville gathered in the Eucharistic celebration and shared morning tea afterwards.
VINNIES SUPPORTS EDDIE RICE CAMP
While most students were able to completely relax last holidays, three of our senior Vinnies‟ members, seized
the opportunity to give something back to the community. Jessie Fauntleroy, Taryn Reiterer, Caitlynn
Shelley volunteered to supervise a number of children at an Edmund Rice Camp. The girls tell of their
experience:
“When we were 17, we went to Eddy Rice Camp, AND RAN AWAY TO SEA!
Climbed aboard a pirate ship, the Captain said to me,
„we‟re going north, south, east, west and up the Irish Sea!‟
A bottle of rum to warm my tum and that‟s the life for me.”
Obviously, this little song sounds better with the 20 pairs of little and big buddies screaming it at the top of
their lungs along with the appropriate actions. Personally, I feel there are not enough words in the English
language to describe the four days spent in Proserpine‟s Camp Kanga with our little buddies. The whole point of
the camp was for us big buddies to give our little buddies THE BEST HOLIDAY EVER, and I‟d like to think we
did. With our assigned little buddy, we each went canoeing, swimming, sat round a camp-fire and everything in
between. Walking was never an option; we had to run everywhere with our slightly hyperactive buddies, which
often left us physically, mentally and emotionally drained. But as the week drew to a close, our little buddies
thanked us for the brilliant time they had had and we felt that the leg cramps, headaches and cases of
pneumonia were well worth it. We were clearly spiritually rewarded for giving the precious gift of time to these
children. [Jessie Fauntleroy, Taryn Reiterer, Caitlynn Shelley]
As always, we are very appreciative of the generosity of our Maggies girls.
SMMC YEAR 10 SUBJECT EXPO
Monday 30 th July 2012
All Year 10 Parents/Guardians are invited to attend our Subject Expo on Monday 30 th July. The evening will
begin in the Church at 6.30pm with a presentation by Mrs Glenwright. She will provide information about the
Subject Selection process for Year 11 and the associated implications for the QCE and OPs.
This is an important presentation for Parents/Guardians as it will clarify many of the issues associated with
Students moving into Senior Schooling. After the presentation in the Church, Parents/Guardians and Students
will move to the Subject Displays, which will be set up in the area around the Theatre. Students will have
already had the opportunity to visit the Subject Displays after lunch on Monday.
PASTORAL TEAM & COUNSELLING
YEAR 12 RETREAT
Year 12 Students will experience their last school retreat on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Retreat
provides an opportunity for students to remove themselves from routine activity to find a place for the
transformation of their spiritual selves. This year's retreat is facilitated by the Diocesan National Evangelisation
Team (NET). The NET team has prepared students in classroom sessions leading up to the retreat, and this
rapport will enable students to feel comfortable over the two days.
Please keep all our Year 12 Students in your prayers this week as they journey through this very important
event in their last school semester.
YEAR 8 SOCIAL
The Year 8 Social is on this Friday night, 27 th July. The evening is arranged in conjunction with St Patrick‟s
College, Ignatius Park College and St Teresa‟s College, Abergowrie. Only students from these schools are
allowed to attend.
The evening will commence at 7pm, so we ask that students arrive between 6.45pm – 7pm. Students may
arrive via the Church car park or the Crowle Street entrance to the MPF. Anyone arriving after 7.00pm is asked
to come to the Crowle Street entrance.
We will be finishing strictly at 9pm. Students may be picked up via the Church car park or Crowle Street.
There will be no pass out of the school grounds during the evening. If you are picking your daughter up before
9pm, please come to the Crowle Street entrance to collect her. As the hosts, the Year 8 students are asked to
bring a plate of food for supper.
This is not a function for dressing up – jeans and shirts with enclosed shoes fit the dress code nicely. Students
have been asked not to wear shorts and singlet tops; certainly no thongs.
Please encourage your daughter to attend this school event; it is a great opportunity to mix with students from
other colleges in their year level.
Lauren Stringini leaves this week for Scotland to
represent Australia at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
(REMT). She will be part of the 25 member OzScot
Australia team (Australia‟s highland dancing team)
chosen to for this world stage event for highland dancing.
They will have a very intense week of rehearsals where
they will dance up to 10 hours a day (until the dance is
done with military precision) – it is all very strict and
security controlled. They will then perform 21 times at
Edinburgh Castle as well as dance in outlying areas as
well as Glasgow. The REMT is the most prestigious of all
the world‟s tattoos and is played out on the world stage,
as the BBC video it and we see it on television on New
Year‟s Eve this year. It is a dream come true for Lauren.
The whole college joins in wishing Lauren the best for the
coming weeks, and of course look forward to hearing of
her highland adventures.
SMMC INTRODUCES SENIOR HEALTH EDUCATION IN
2013
I am delighted to announce that the College Leadership Team has authorised the inclusion of this dynamic
subject to our senior curriculum next year.
Health Education is a QSA Authority (OP eligible) subject that will be offered to our Year 11 students for the
first time in 2013. It is a highly valued academic subject that will promote excellent teaching and learning and
high achievement outcomes for the girls. The subject‟s underlying principles of social justice and addressing
unfair health outcomes for individuals and their communities also resonates very strongly with the College‟s
social justice ethos.
The subject recognises that Health is a dynamic quality of life that is influenced by individual, group and
community, and environmental factors. It provides a context for exploring health issues in which students use
an action-oriented „Inquiry approach‟ to investigate health issues, they then apply practice and principles that
underpin social action and health promotion to devise and justify recommendations and strategies for change.
Health Education will interest girls who are concerned about social justice issues and who have a strong
commitment to community. Those who enjoy a good debate will be equally attracted because the health issues
examined may be at times contentious, with plenty of vigorous argument being present in the public domain
from various stakeholders („Schoolies‟ or Organ recipient eligibility waiting lists are two such examples).
The course is still in draft stage at this point in time but some examples of what the girls will do are as follows:
Investigate the various influences that act to promote or impinge upon their personal health –
especially their positive mental health
Investigate bullying in our College and create an action program resource for girls in the younger
grades
Investigate risk taking behaviours, devise safe strategies and implement an educational campaign
within the College

Investigate contentious issues related to health, and
Investigate the health issues associated with the „Schoolies‟ celebration, devise and implement an
action oriented safety campaign for their peers at the College.
I look forward to meeting parents and students at the upcoming subject expo where I will be happy to discuss
this subject further. I am very much looking forward to teaching this subject to the Year 11 girls next year.
NETBALL
The SMMC Netball side played in the
regional finals on Monday 23 rd July at
Murray. The girls had a great day and
ended up playing Kirwan at the end of
the day to determine the regional
winner. Kirwan came out strong and
scored the first three goals of the
game. SMMC did not panic and scored
the next six goals unanswered. The
game was a physical one with both
sides throwing themselves around. All
of the girls where fantastic in both skill
and sportsmanship. In the end SMMC
took a memorable 19-14 win. The girls
