AZA, TAG’S, SSP’S, PMP’S AND THE BPZ? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? RETICULATED GIRAFFE As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Blank Park Zoo (BPZ) has an ethical duty to cooperatively manage our animal collection for exhibition needs and to join worldwide efforts to ensure the survival of wildlife. With thousands of animal species at AZA facilities around the world how do institutions like the BPZ work together to manage their animal collections? It starts with a Taxonomic Advisory Group (TAG)—a committee of expert advisors who examine the conservation needs of groups of related species. Through collection planning, the TAG establishes priorities for research and conservation, develops animal care and husbandry guidelines and recommends species for different levels of management. The highest level of management the TAG can recommend is a Species Survival Plan (SSP). The mission of an SSP is to ensure the survival of a selected species. There are 112 different species of animals covered by an SSP. Any zoo that exhibits these species must participate fully by transferring animals when requested, reproducing or not based upon TAG recommendations and keeping the committee informed of the status of individual animals. Population Management Plans (PMPs) are similar to SSPs but require less intensive management and conservation action. There are currently 313 species with a PMP. Collection management is key in helping the Blank Park Zoo fulfill its mission for the conservation of animal species and ensure the survival of wildlife. EAST AFRICAN CRESTED CRANE BLANK PARK ZOO 10
IOWA’S ZOO & BEYOND: THE BLANK PARK ZOO CONSERVATION COMMITTEE The Conservation Committee is a dedicated group of staff and volunteers who raise money to support conservation efforts around the world. In its 10th year, the committee supported the following projects: 11 2006-07 ANNUAL REPORT PAN AFRICAN SANCTUARY ALLIANCE (PASA): $1,350 PASA is committed to the conservation and care of African primates. PASA places standards of health, welfare, conservation and protection for orphaned and endangered primates. BONOBO HORNBILL RESEARCH FOUNDATION: FAMILY ADOPTION PROGRAM: $240 The foundation is dedicated to protecting nests and raising awareness of the nearly extinct hornbill conservation. KIBALE COMMUNITY FUEL WOOD PROJECT: $500 This project aims to protect Kibale National Park in Uganda through education and conservation practices. CENTER FOR ECOLOGICAL SURVIVAL: $665 Funding to purchase and protect crucial habitats in the tropics. “In the end, we conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” CALIFORNIA WOLF CENTER: $250 Increase awareness and conservation efforts through focus on the North American Gray Wolf. AFRICAN PREDATOR CONSERVATION RESEARCH ORGANIZATION: $2,000 This organization examines the viability and health of African predators in order to evaluate their long-term survival potential. AZA ENDOWMENT FUND: $500 To support the cooperative conservation-related scientific and educational initiatives of AZA and its member institutions. —BABA DIOUM, SENEGALESE POET SNOW LEOPARD GRAY WOLF SNOW LEOPARD TRUST: $1,000 This organization is dedicated to the conservation of the endangered snow leopard and its mountainous ecosystem.
