It will be a very entertaining program with a delicious luncheon and guest presenter Pati Kachel, at the Lost Spur/Osman Event Center on April 20, 2013. Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary, Spring is coming and with it comes our first Osman Womens Auxiliary event for 2013. This will be a program for all ages. Please bring your friends, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews; anyone you think would enjoy hearing the story of Miss The gift cart is up and running, staffed with volunteers on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We have a wide variety of items on the cart to sell, and the profits are donated directly to the Auxiliary. Beatrix Potter. There will be a special luncheon menu for the children. Once again, the Osman Womens Auxiliary and the children at Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities has been blessed. Brad Stout, President of the Austin Shrine Club, and Bill and Bonnie Newell from the Austin Shrine Club delivered a truck load of toys to the Auxiliary at the Hospital. There were several huge, huge boxes full of toys. The boxes were so large and heavy that it took 4 men to unload them from the truck. The assortment of toys was absolutely fabulous. There were toys for all ages from the very young to the teen agers, and for boys and girls. We so appreciate receiving all these wonderful toys. The children at our Hospital will really have fun with these toys. Thank you Austin Shrine Club and thank you Brad, Bill and Bonnie for delivering these toys! What a wonderful gift! The gift cart is up and running at Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. The cart is staffed with volunteers on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We have a wide variety of items on the cart to sell, and the profits are donated directly to the Auxiliary. We still need more volunteers to staff some of the shifts. If you are interested in volunteering to staff the gift cart, please contact Marjorie Park at # (651)455-6586. There are still several shifts available particularly on Thursdays. It’s fun to spend the time at the Hospital and interact with staff, patients and families. Two important Hospital dates to mark on calendar are May 17 and May 18. May 17 is Hospital Day which is always a very interesting day when you hear what is new at the Hospital, and you have an opportunity to hear from some patients and their families. May 18 is the day to celebrate Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities’ 90th Anniversary. We will also be celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Womens General Auxiliary. It would be great to attend both of these days as this is what we are all about – helping the children at the Hospital. Also, a little reminder: There are some of our members who have not yet sent in their membership dues for 2013. We know everyone is very busy and sometimes the renewal form gets set aside to be dealt with later. We would appreciate if you would take a few minutes to mail in your $15 dues for 2013. If you have misplaced your renewal form, please just send your check to Kathy Flicek, Membership Chairman, at 2493 Bridgeview Ct., Mendota Heights, MN 55120. We value your continued support. Your membership is very important to the children at Shriners Hospital for Children –Twin Cities and to the success of our auxiliary. Mark your calendars now for all of the 2013 Osman Womens Auxiliary programs. May 11, 2013, will be a luncheon at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, MN. with a guest speaker from the Goodhue Historical Society. This was a really fun location for one of our luncheons last year with many shopping opportunities in the area. Also, back by popular demand is our Auxiliary sponsored BUNCO Party on June 13, Thursday evening. This event is for everyone. We had many men and women attend this event last year and everyone had a great time! Again, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as your Chairman, and thank you for all of your continued support. Mendota Heights, MN 55118 Beloved Shriner Red Skelton to be honored in 2013 2013 marks the 100th birthday of fellow Mason and Shriner Red Skelton The year 2013 will mark the 100th birthday of fellow Mason and Shriner of 58 years, Richard “Red” Skelton. Red was a member of both the Vincennes Blue Lodge in Vincennes, Ind. and Al Malaikah Shriners in Los Angeles. A tribute to Red – who was often celebrated as the “world’s greatest clown” – will be held at the Red Skelton Museum Clown School – on the campus of Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind., June 4-9, 2013. All Shrine clowns and fraternity members are invited to take part in the commemoration of the life and legacy of Red Skelton. The Legacy of Red Skelton Born the son of a circus clown in 1913, Richard “Red” Skelton was destined to entertain the world. By age 15, Red was employed as a full-time entertainer, with assignments ranging from vaudeville to circus performances. It was not long until Red’s slapstick comedic parodies captured the American public’s attention. In 1941, Red premiered his own radio show, The Raleigh Cigarette Program. Ten years later, CBS adapted the popular program for television, with Red as their first host televised in color. By the 1950s, Red had expanded his performances and appeared in more than 30 MGM films, which included Having a Wonderful Time and Bathing Beauty. In addition to being a television and radio entertainer, Red was also a famed interpretive clown and, in 1989, was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame in Baraboo, Wis. Near the end of his life, Red enjoyed the fine arts of writing, music and painting. Some of his best work is displayed at the Red Skelton Museum, including scrapbooks and photos of his eclectic life.
