Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World
Kosher Food Pantry
The Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service maintains a food pantry for
clients in need: the chronically ill, frail seniors, new immigrants, and people
of all ages who live below the poverty line.
Please help with this Mitzvah by bringing kosher food items to the
synagogue - with current usage dates stamped on the cans and packages -
and deposit them in either of two baskets located in front of the office
and the sanctuary. Thank you!
Be a Hero: Mentoring 4 Kids Needs You
Growing up isn’t easy. Growing up in a single parent household can make it even tougher. Now help is available. Thanks to
a grant from the Children’s Services Council, Alpert Jewish Family and Children’s Services “Mentoring 4 Kids” will be able
to help more children in Palm Beach County. Formerly known as the Jewish Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, it is now the
non-sectarian “Mentoring 4 Kids” program. They match caring adults with children ages 6-14 who are being raised in single
parent homes. They seek men and women over 25 who make a one-year commitment to meet with their “little brother”
or “little sister” at least twice a month for 2-4 hours. Interested in helping out? Be a hero to a child today! Contact Karen
Cohen, Program Director, at 561-238-0285 or Peggy Kroll, Outreach Coordinator at 561-238-0281.
UNSUNG HEROES
AT TEMPLE EMANU-EL
This series features members whose volunteer efforts behind the
scenes at Temple Emanu-El embody the ideals of Tikkun Olam –
Repairing the World. In this case, our nominees are doing good
deeds within our own Temple Emanu-El family.
The nominees this month are “OUR MINYANAIRES”. Some people
come to the morning minyan for the intimate atmosphere it offers
for personal prayers. Others attend to make sure we have the
necessary ten persons. These wonderful people perform a mitzvah
each and every Monday and Thursday when they appear at the
synagogue at 8:15 in the morning to count toward the ten people
required in order to form a minyan. Because of their selfless acts,
Temple Emanu-El’s members have the ability to say the Mourner’s
Kaddish for their dearly departed loved ones on or near the
anniversary date of their death. Our “minyanaires” give our
congregants the gift of remembering those relatives and friends
who are no longer on this earth. By their acts, those participating in
the minyan, make the quorum necessary to allow those present to
have the mitzvah of hearing the Torah read, as well as reciting
Kaddish.
You, too, can help to perform this mitzvah by participating in the
morning minyan. As this New Year begins please consider being
counted as a “minyanaire” and join a very warm, welcoming group.
Some of our regular minyan attendees are: Dr. Jack Bader, Jerome
Baumoehl, Harry Black, Dr. G. Marshal Goldberg, Dr. Haviva
Langenauer, Jeffrey Greif, Ed Mehl, Ronna Salinger, Robert Shore and
Dr. Pierce Weinstein
Reading Torah on Thursday 10/15/09 minyan are:
L to R: Ed Mehl, Haviva Langenauer & Harry Black
Yasher Koach to Marilyn and Arnold Lampert,
who have made a $1 million gift to name the main
offices of the Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s
Service, our Jewish community’s social service
organization. AJFCS’s mission of tikkun olam is
accomplished through the 29 different programs that
help people meet life’s challenges. The Lamperts join
fellow Emanu-El members Claire and Melvin Levine
who previously made a gift to name the agency’s
residential program for adults with disabilities.
