Focus on Jewish Women in the
Physical & Social Sciences
O u r f i r s t g e n e r a l m e e t i n g o n
Wednesday, November 4 at 1:30
p.m. leads us into a year of honoring the
medical and social service providers in
our community with a focus on science.
Barbara Noble of the Scripps
Research Institute, in Jupiter, will present
an overview of its activities including
Barbara Noble
advances in Alzheimer’s, cancer and other
medical research. Alex Bruner will be
on hand to explain the significant grants the government has made
to advance research at the institute. Dr. Dana Krumholz is chair
of the event. Everyone welcome.
The Annual Membership Luncheon on Wednesday,
December 9 at 12:30 pm features an amazing woman, Lisa
Kogen, Director of Education, Women’s League for Conservative
Judaism and author of Strength & Splendor. Her book includes the
bios of Jewish women who have made their mark in every field
including science. The gala luncheon is a wonderful time to greet
friends and meet new members. VP Belle Winston is
Membership Chair; Fran Friedman is luncheon chair.
Molly Picon is the madcap star of the movie “Yidl mtn Fidl,”
shot in 1937 in Poland. It has been carefully restored with English
sub-titles. It will be shown Wednesday, January 6 at 1:30
p.m. with an introduction by Dr. Haviva Langenauer. A
humorous story with lots of music, “Yidl” is also testimony to the
rich communal life Polish Jews enjoyed before the Shoah.
“”The Big Do” this year is our Ultimate Garage Sale that is off
to a flying start with the donation of three rooms of high-end
furniture and the contribution of an air-conditioned storeroom to
house it all. The big weekend is March 14 and 15! Chair
Robin Bernstein has been holding meetings with volunteers to
plan what will be a humungous operation. All temple members can
help. Put aside your chachkes, clothing, jewelry, furniture, art work,
etc. that you will want to add to the sale. And plan to keep the
week before open to help with receiving, pricing, placing and
displaying. Those with retail experience especially welcome. This is
Women’s League’s major fundraiser for our synagogue. Let’s make
it a bonanza. For more details check with Robin
(Robin@rbernstein.com).
Dear Friends,
PRESIDENT
MICKEY FELDBERG
The Holy days are over - for the moment -
and now we have to look forward to
the secular celebration of Thanksgiving
in November, then Hanukkah in December.
In between we look forward to the launch of the Women’s League
“season.” November’s general meeting focuses on the important
scientific work at The Scripp’s Research Institute right here in our
community.
On December 9 th we’ll gather in the social hall for the annual
Membership Luncheon. As always, it will be a gala event with
fabulous food and a special speaker. Aside from a nominal charge
for the luncheon, you must be a paid-up member to attend.
Spouses are always welcome. Watch for your invitation with full
details.
At this point I want to remind you why every female member of
Temple Emanu-El should be a member of Women’s League. There
are myriad opportunities waiting for you to…
Connect with other women.
Experience stimulating programs and study groups
designed to enhance your personal growth, Jewish
involvement and sense of community.
Develop your intellect, ability and creativity for personal,
educational and cultural enrichment.
Establish new and lasting relationships by sharing life-cycle
events and by networking for social and business contacts.
Add your voice and influence public policy concerning the
family, synagogue, the Jewish community and Israel.
We have an incredible number of long-time members, but new
faces and new energy are a necessity if an organization is to grow
and prosper. There is so much talent in our community and
membership in Women’s League gives each one of us a platform for
our knowledge and skills. JOIN US; YOU’LL BE GLAD YOU DID!
Before closing I want to bring to your attention a significant event
that will occur at Shabbat services on Dec. 19 th – the eighth day of
Hanukkah. Women’s League will present to our synagogue a
magnificent needlepoint cover for the Torah podium, created by
Rita Chase and lovingly stitched by Rita, Claire Cohen, Faye
Sugar, Edith Heilbron and myself. It is another treasure to add to
Temple Emanu-El’s collection.
Do join us!
