From the President’s Desk... On behalf of my entire family, I want to sincerely thank the clergy, staff and membership of Temple Emanu-El for your caring support following the recent death of my father, Herman Schram. Though few in our congregational family knew him, Rabbi Resnick’s eulogy brought out the essence of my father’s life. Now, I would like to write about some of the lessons I learned from my father. My father was a man of few words, but he had a habit of repeating various sayings as I was growing up. “If you can’t pay cash, you can’t afford it,” “You are judged by the company you keep,” “You can always do better if you really try” are a few of the early ones he repeated. While these maxims imparted valuable lessons, I only recently came to the realization that the real impact of what my father had to teach me was not contained in his words at all. It was the way he lived his life. At my father’s memorial service, my sister’s closest childhood friend came up to me and said “you always had the best parents.” It was obvious to me at the earliest age that my parents loved and respected one another. Even before I knew what she meant, my mother told me how good a man my father was; to her, to his children, to his family and to my mother’s family as well. What little he had, he was always willing to share. Even though he left home at twelve, my father never stopped loving and helping to support his family. Our home in West Palm Beach was very small for our family of five, but it held ten to twelve people for four months every winter as my mother’s large family took turns coming to stay with us for weeks at a time. After suffering from MS for ten years, my mother died twenty six years ago. At that point my father’s personality seemed to change. He grew a pony tail and started going out dancing several nights a week, always buying drinks for everyone he met. When I moved back to West Palm Beach in 1986, I discovered that my quiet, unassuming father was now a favorite in every nightspot in the Palm Beaches. His reaction to the lingering death of my mother was to make sure that he enjoyed every day left to him on this earth. One part of him that never changed, however, was his continued generosity to his family and everyone around him. Condolences The Officers, Trustees and Staff of Temple Emanu-El wishes to express their sincerest condolences to President Ron Schram and his family on the death of his father, Herman Schram. Although he continued to honor the memory of my mother, my father was lucky enough to find love a second time with his companion of seventeen years, Linda Marchese. Their mutual love and devotion was obvious to everyone who ever met them. I now am blessed to have a beautiful, loving wife and we are blessed to have three wonderful children. Raising our children has become the paramount purpose in our lives. And just like I realized that my father’s words were less important than his actions, I now understand that our children will not heed our instructions if our behavior contradicts them. It may seem very basic, and I don’t remember my father ever verbalizing the thought, but people, including children, really do judge you by your actions and not just your words. My father was far from perfect. He constantly reminded me that he only had a fifth grade education and often felt uncomfortable among the wealthy and high brow. But he taught me many important lessons about life. About honoring your parents, respecting your wife, sacrificing for your children, being a man of your word, being generous and always trying to do the “right thing.” Great lessons indeed. Around the Shul... Treasures of the Temple Season 2, 2009-10, 5770 Treasures of the Temple Project began the New Year, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, on Shabbat Shuvah, by offering a “mini tour” of the special white Torah Mantles and Ark Curtain used only during this time of the year. Many of our snow birds do not have a chance to see this work, as by the end of Simhat Torah, according to Jewish Tradition, we change back to the Torah mantles used during the rest of the year. The tour was held in front of the Ark where the elegant silks, velvets, and embroideries on the Mantles could be seen up close. As other tours, it was interactive, with several youngsters helping find the clues to the meanings of the embroidered symbols. Docents who were present for the High Holy Day tour were Carmela Kalmanson, Vivienne Ivry and Haviva Langenauer. On Kol Nidrei eve, when the Torahs are brought out and held in front of the Ark, each one had an exquisite mantle that reflected the themes of the High Holy Days. One Torah was distinct, merely wrapped in a Tallit. This is our Holocaust Torah, usually seen in a case in the lobby outside the Sanctuary. We hope by next Yom Kippur we will be able to clothe it in a mantle reflective of its importance and history. Our Temple is fortunate to be the home of beautiful Judaica in the form of stained glass windows, sculptures, mosaics, and ritual objects. Their history and meaning is important to us. The project will continue its research this year as more of our committee members return. We will focus on more of the stained glass windows and our tapestries. Called “The Jew who dealt with the Nazis” for his role in saving 1700 Hungarian Jews, Kasztner was put on trial in Israel in the 1950ʼs and later assassinated. With chilling interviews with his murderer and his family, this film debates how much you should negotiate with the enemy--a topic still relevant today.
