In Hungary, the surname is
placed first. A woman’s formal name
is constructed from her husband’s
name by adding a suffix (-né) to his
given name. So Mr. Molnár Jakab’s
wife would be Molnár Jakabné in
polite company, but perhaps Anna
at home. Hungarian aristocrats’
names during the Austro-Hungarian
imperial period contained a German
given name, ‘von’ and the family
name. Example: Johann von Báthory.
Of course unofficially they used the
Hungarian form of their names. (Báthory
János in our example.)
