French names consist of one
or more given names followed by
a surname. Names of saints are
particularly favoured. Surnames are
most often occupational, descriptive,
patronymic or geographical.
Sometimes, an alias surname is adopted
to distinguish individuals with
particularly common names. When
this is done, the alias is either used
on its own or presented following
the actual surname with the prefixed
preposition “dit” (de) (E.g.
“Vioget dit Galliard”) or is used all
on it’s own.
