If you are not easily fooled by appearances and want to know how society really works, this is the subject for you. Be prepared to think, to argue and have your view of the world changed forever. AS Module 1: Mass Media Sociology This module explores who owns our media and who decides what it says. You will explore the role of the media in representations of gender, ethnicity, disability and sexuality. This module also explores violence in the media. Do violent films and video games make people violent? What effect does the media have on us? Are we being brainwashed? We will study newspapers, magazines, soap operas and films. AS Module 2: Education This module explores different ideas about the purpose of education. It asks questions such as, why do we go to school? Is our education system fair? In what ways and why do some pupils rebel against school? Should private schools be abolished? AS Module 3: Coursework A written piece of coursework based on any area of personal interest raised by modules 1 and 2. A2 Module 4: Religion This module explores different theories of religion and studies various cults, sects and churches through the world. A2 Synoptic Module: Crime and Deviance Why do some people commit crime? This module examines various theories of criminal and deviant behaviour. Can people be born evil or is it something they learn? A2 Module 7: Research and Coursework You will have the opportunity to carry out your own piece of sociological research. Prospects: Sociology is an excellent subject for developing skills of analysis and evaluation. The subject provides a good foundation for any degree course requiring critical thinking. Entry Requirements No need to have done GCSE Sociology A good grade in GCSE English is very useful Specification AQA Advanced Subsidiary /A2 AS: 3 Modules in Mass Media and Education as well as a Coursework module. A level: A further two modules in Crime and Deviance, Sociology of Religion and a piece of Sociological research. Assessment AS: Two written papers and Coursework. Students will develop a personal response to each unit by using a variety of traditional and contemporary textile techniques alongside art materials within a critical and contextual framework. Domestic textiles, soft furnishing Fashion The development of critical and contextual awareness is an integral part of all units. Students will be expected to keep sketch books, sample books and to undertake visits to experience contemporary textiles and traditional art first hand. Textiles are used as an expressive art form and highly creative responses are required along with technical skills. Adult students are welcome and have been very successful in the past in this subject.
