Regional Workshop on Women <strong>and</strong> Minority <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders<br />

Day Two 13 October 2009<br />

The facilitator welcomed participants for the second day <strong>of</strong> the workshop <strong>and</strong> allowed new<br />

members to introduce themselves. She then invited the next presenter to commence.<br />

I. Regional Advocacy <strong>and</strong> Lobby Campaigns on Women<br />

<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders <strong>and</strong> Minority <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders - Practices<br />

Mr. Arjan Van Der Waal, Coordinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders Program, Amnesty<br />

International shared some <strong>of</strong> the common practices <strong>of</strong> advocacy. He begun by imploring the<br />

participants to have a good advocacy plan as the key to effective advocacy. Advocacy in this<br />

case was defined as a project designed to achieve specific responses <strong>of</strong> a particular audience.<br />

The presenter illustrated this by dissecting the famous ‘Lubna Ahmed al Hussein’ case<br />

concerning a Sudanese journalist who was arrested <strong>and</strong> charged for wearing trousers in public<br />

in contravention <strong>of</strong> Sudanese indecency laws, <strong>and</strong> in which Amnesty International intervened.<br />

Through this, participants were able to evaluate different types <strong>of</strong> advocacy strategies. He<br />

outlined the core steps <strong>of</strong> an advocacy plan to incorporate the following;<br />

� Identification <strong>of</strong> the problem<br />
