From the strategies outlined above, it is unmistakable that everybody has a role to play in the
protection of human rights defenders – whether they be from civil society (NGOs), human
rights institutions, international human rights organizations, individuals or any other partners
and that this should not be done in an isolated and haphazard manner, but rather in a
coordinated approach and allowing support across boundaries using networks such as that
availed by EHAHRDP and the internet.
M. Conclusions, Wrap Up and Closing
It is clear that women human rights defenders and minority rights defenders have a lot of
challenges facing them, and although there are existing mechanisms at national, regional and
international level to protect them, it must also be elucidated that many of these mechanisms,
especially the formal ones, have their own limitations. As such, the timeliness of this workshop
was particularly useful in allowing for discussion on what kind of strategies can be developed
to address the prevailing challenges and contribute to better protection and promotion of rights
of HRDs.
