President’s Message 

September 2012 

Dear Blanchet Community, 

The school year 2011-2012 was truly one of the most remarkable in 

our school’s young history. We made great progress on the goals 

of our five-year plan, broke ground on a new 10,600 sq. ft. addition, 

celebrated the amazing success of our very talented class of 2012, and 

so much more. 

We’ve chosen to share what we consider our ‘biggest stories of the 

year’ in the form of a calendar. Please take the time to read the sidebar that accompanies each photo 

and be reminded what your support and generosity means to the 360 students that attend Blanchet 

Catholic. 

We hope you enjoy the new calendar format of our President’s Annual Report and hang it prominently 

in your home so you can look forward to the many special events that we have scheduled for this 

upcoming year. I also ask you to pay special attention to the donor lists that populate the back of the 

publication and join me in saying a prayer of thanksgiving to the hundreds of donors whose consistent 

and generous support allow us to continue providing an excellent Catholic secondary education to Mid 

Valley youth.

Development Report 

We are very grateful to the donors listed in the back 

of this publication whose generous financial support 

allows us to continue carrying out our mission. 

Below is a brief report on our development activities 

in 2011-2012. 

Major School Fundraisers – 

Auction – While our fall auction fell 9% short of its 

financial goal, the event remains the school’s largest 

annual fundraiser and netted nearly $100,000 for 

our operating budget. We greatly appreciate the 

volunteer committee that organizes this successful 

event and the over 375 attendees who enjoyed a 

fantastic evening in support of our school. 

Raffle – Blanchet students did an amazing job 

selling raffle tickets this winter and as a result, this 

fundraiser met its ambitious financial goal and netted 

$45,000 for students and programs. Thank you to 

everyone who supported this fundraiser by buying 

raffle tickets! 

Annual Fund – Our annual fund exceeded its goal 

and netted over $65,000. Over 70 donors (including 

many first time donors) took advantage of the 

opportunity to purchase a custom stepping stone 

that will be installed in our new outdoor courtyard. 

Overall, over $240,000 was raised by the 

development team this school year to fund school 

operations. 

Five Year Plan - 

We established our latest Strategic Five-Year Plan, 

Vision 2015, in 2010. We made considerable progress 

this year towards our goals including breaking 

ground on our new Commons building, continuing 

to renovate and modernize the school campus, 

purchasing Naviance college counseling software and 

beginning to implement a technology curriculum into 

the master schedule. 

Foundation for the Future Campaign 

We went public with the “Foundation for the Future” 

campaign in fall 2011. To date, over $3.6 million has 

been raised towards our $4.2 million goal. These 

funds are being used to: renovate and build facilities, 

provide tuition assistance, enhance the curriculum and 

upgrade technology. We are confident that, with your 

help, we can raise the remaining $600,000 to fund the 

priorities of our five-year plan by 2015.

Whether in band, choir 

or drama, Blanchet students 

found success. 

Under the outstanding 

leadership of Music Director 

Kami Hettwer, the band and 

choir programs have seen a 

marked increase in participation 

and overall quality. In additon 

to band, guitar ensemble and 

choir classes, Mrs. Hettwer has 

provided many wonderful 

opportunities for her music 

students to share their talents 

including participation in pep 

band, musical workshops and 

festivals. 

The high school drama program 

welcomed two talented guest 

directors for the 2011-12 season. 

Dave Berrier directed the fall 

production of The Scarlet Letter 

and Gabrielle Brewer-Wallin 

directed the spring musical 

Quilters. Both plays showcased 

the wonderful theatrical and 

musical talents of our students. 

Kasey Roberts brought her 

expertise and guidance to the 

mid high program for the year 

with the production of two 

delightful plays, School House 

Rock and Seussical.

Blanchet has been well represented in Salem’s World Beat Festival Art Contest for many 

years in a row. This year was no exception. Blanchet’s high school art program won the 

Honorable Mention award for high school art classroom and the mid high art program 

won 1st Place for their classroom entry in the K-8 category. Individually, Megumi Kim 

(grade 11) and Ryan Orlandini (grade 10) both received Honorable Mention Concept 

Design, and Katie Pittioni (grade 10) was honored with the Award of Excellence.

Crystal Apple Award Winner 

Blanchet art teacher Mrs. 

Heintzman was named 

a 2011 Crystal Apple Award 

winner, one of just ten superb 

educators in Salem to receive 

this prestigious honor. Each 

year the Salem Area Chamber 

of Commerce, in collaboration 

with Salem-Keizer Public Schools, 

and the Salem-Keizer Education 

Foundation awards the Crystal 

Apple to educators who have 

made significant contributions in 

the lives of children. 

In letters nominating Mrs. 

Heintzman for this award, 

Blanchet parent Mary Belleque 

commented, “Mrs. Heintzman is 

loved, valued and admired not 

only by her present students, 

but by faculty, former students, 

parents and the entire Blanchet 

community. She is truly one of 

Blanchet’s treasures.” 

Colleague Kasey Roberts wrote, 

“Mary is able to pull the very 

best from the rawest of talent. 

Her students feel that she 

connects with them individually 

and is able to steer them in the 

direction of their interests.” 

In addition to her 28 years as 

an educator, Mrs. Heintzman 

has dedicated countless hours 

outside of the classroom to 

community projects including 

directing the Eco-Earth project in 

Salem’s Riverfront Park.

Blanchet’s New Commons 

Blanchet broke ground on 

its new Commons building 

last spring. “This is the heart of 

the school,” said President Lee 

when talking about the new 

Commons building during the 

groundbreaking ceremony on 

April 13, 2012. Auxiliary Bishop 

Kenneth Steiner, who also is a 

member of Mr. Lee’s Advisory 

Board, provided a blessing for 

the students and new building 

during the ceremony. 

The new Commons building 

is a 10,600 sq. ft. addition to 

the campus that will include a 

cafeteria, commercial kitchen, 

athletic locker rooms, student 

store and landscaped courtyard. 

In addition to meeting many 

school needs, the building will 

also be available for reunions 

and for neighborhood and 

community activities.

On December 9, 2011 

Blanchet hosted its first 

annual holiday party for families 

living in the East Lancaster 

neighborhood, where Blanchet 

is located. The party was part 

of Blanchet’s pledge to “bring 

hope” to others through service 

and outreach projects during the 

year.

Lancaster Neighborhood 

Partnership including Blanchet

Boys & Girls Club, A.C. Gilbert’s

Chapel, City of Salem, the 

Christian Center of Salem, the 

Salem Police Department and 

several others. Nearly 500 

guests attended and enjoyed 

dinner, holiday activities, crafts 

from around the world, carnival 

games and visits with Santa.

Academic Achievements 

Curriculum Enhanced 

Blanchet takes great pride 

in its college preparatory 

program and the outstanding 

achievements of its student 

body. 

Since 1998, 23 Blanchet 

students have been honored 

by the prestigious National 

Merit Scholarship organization 

including two members of the 

class of 2012 ~ Alyssa Pollard 

was honored as a Commended 

Student and her classmate Tori 

Hittner was honored as a Finalist. 

In an effort to continually 

improve and add interest to 

the curriculum, Blanchet has 

added three new courses to 

its offerings. Chemistry II was 

added as an option for high 

school students wishing to study 

further in the sciences. Seminar 

for Success is a new mid high 

elective designed to support 

the transition into high school. 

Additionally, a multi-media 

technology class was offered 

during the 2012 summer camp 

session. This popular course, 

comprised of music and video 

production, will be offered as 

a full class during the spring 

semester of 2013.

New Traditions & Old 

The celebration of Mass 

is central to the Blanchet 

Catholic School mission. The 

opportunity to participate in the 

traditions of the Catholic church 

and to create new traditions 

unique to Blanchet help to 

foster a dynamic environment 

for academic, spiritual and social 

growth. 

This spring Blanchet began a 

new tradition with a special pen 

Mass. Prior to a celebration of 

Mass by Father David Cullings, 

time was dedicated to this new 

and meaningful passing of the 

pen from this year’s seniors to 

the juniors. Each junior received 

a pen, inscribed with Blanchet 

Catholic, their name, a cross 

and “By Courage & Faith,” from 

a member of the class of 2012. 

Mass was followed by a special 

lunch for juniors and seniors.

Disney Planet Challenge 

Watershed Restoration 

Blanchet’s eighth grade 

class, led by science teacher 

Mrs. Halsey Randall, was 

honored in May as the state 

winner (6th place nationally) 

of the Disney Planet Challenge 

for their efforts to improve 

the Willamette watershed on 

school grounds. The Challenge 

is an initiative that focuses on 

inspiring kids and families around 

the world to take simple steps 

to help the planet and their 

communities. 

The eighth graders began their 

project in January with the 

clean up of one of four drainage 

ditches and an adjoining swale 

that eventually drain into 

Claggett Creek. A native plant, 

educational and demonstration 

garden was also established. 

The group’s efforts have been 

recognized locally with a 

grant from the Diack Ecology 

Education Program and, most 

recently, with a $7,500 grant 

from the City of Salem to 

continue to remove invasive 

plant species and garbage and 

to establish native plants along 

all four ditch banks and the 

swale. The goal of the project 

and grant is to ensure that the 

water leaving the Blanchet 

campus is clean and cool when 

it enters Claggett Creek.

attendance at its annual 

Grandparents Day program held 

on April 27, 2012. Grandparents 

and their grandchildren were 

treated to a complimentary 

lunch and a program that 

included an excerpt from the 

spring musical and excellent 

performances from the choir 

and band. Grandmother Eileen 

Zielinski and Vicki McHugh were 

the featured speakers during 

the program, and each guest in 

attendance received a potted 

geranium, compliments of Al’s 

Garden Centers and Joe and 

Darcy Ruef. 

Grandparents Day is just one 

of the many special events 

that help expand our Cavalier 

family. Other events include our 

Father Daughter Dinner, Mother 

Son Brunch and Senior Parent 

Breakfast.

Varsity Softball 

2012 State Champions! 

In 2012, Blanchet’s varsity 

softball team brought home 

the 3A state championship 

title. The team racked up a 

spectacular run of victories 

advancing them to the OSAA 3A 

State Championship game. The 

girls shut out Myrtle Creek 20-0 

in the first round of state playoffs 

and then passed by their fellow 

conference players of Pleasant 

Hill 5-4 in the quarterfinal game. 

Following that was a battle 

against Dayton with a final score 

of 10-5 in Blanchet’s favor taking 

them into the championship 

game. In the end, the Lady 

Cavaliers took the state title in a 

5–1 victory over conference rival 

Santiam Christian. 

Blanchet’s only senior player, 

Allie Butterfield, led the Lady 

Cavaliers to the state title and 

was named 1st Team All State 

Infielder and 3A Player of the 

Year. In November of 2011, 

Butterfield signed to play softball 

with the Arizona State University 

Sun Devils.

Extraordinary Achievements 

Blanchet’s Class of 2012 

The class of 2012 was a 

particularly high achieving 

class including one National 

Merit Finalist and one National 

Merit Commended Scholar. The 

65 members of this class earned 

$6.2 million in scholarship offers 

– a record amount in Blanchet 

history. 

Seniors in the class of 2012 were 

accepted to 74 colleges and 

universities across the country 

including Baylor University, 

Gonzaga University, Santa Clara 

University, Seattle University, 

Sweet Briar College, University 

of Denver, University of Notre 

Dame and Willamette University, 

just to name a few. 

This year the school honored 

two valedictorians: Tori Hittner 

and Dan Smith; and four 

salutatorians: Bret Brandner, 

Katelyn Ditzler, Sarah Darst and 

Elizabeth Moore. 

President Charles Lee said, “The 

class of 2012 is a truly remarkable 

class. While we are so proud of 

their academic achievements 

and are excited about their 

futures, what is most important 

is that they are tremendous 

individuals. Our seniors are 

strong in their faith and values 

and committed to making a 

difference in the world.”

In the Middle of it All 

Unique Mid High Experience 

Blanchet’s mid high offers 

a unique college preparatory 

program for grades 6 - 8. While 

academics are the priority, our 

mission is to provide our mid high 

students with a well rounded 

experience rich with social, 

spiritual as well as intellectual 

opportunities. 

Mid high students attend Mass 

and retreats, have their own 

student government, produce 

their own plays and musicals, 

participate in clubs and athletics, 

attend dances and socials and 

compete in math and science 

competitions. 

Of the many special activities 

offered to our mid high, there 

are five that stand out as favorites 

among students. The annual 

Camp Howard Clean-Up is a 

full day of service our 7th and 

8th graders provide to this youth 

camp located at the base of Mt. 

Hood. The Zoo Snooze is a rare 

chance to spend the night at 

the Oregon Zoo for our seventh 

graders. The Lock-In is an all 

night social put on for 6th - 8th 

graders by the senior class. Away 

Day is a full day spent at Oaks 

Amusement Park just for our 8th 

grade class, and the 8th Grade 

Celebration is a special Mass 

and ceremony honoring our 8th 

graders and celebrating their 

promotion to high school.

Legacy Alumni 

The Gathering 

Over 500 alumni and 

friends of Sacred Heart 

Academy and Serra Catholic 

High School attended an all-year 

reunion held at Blanchet on 

August 6, 2011. Sacred Heart 

Academy closed its doors in 

1984 and Serra Catholic in 1969. 

Guests traveled from all 

across the U.S. to attend “The 

Gathering” and enjoyed sharing 

memories of their schools, 

looking at memorabilia and 

dancing to the music performed 

by “The Live 5,” a popular Salem 

rock-n-roll band that formed out 

of Serra Catholic. 

Blanchet’s Legacy Alumni 

Committee has worked tirelessly 

to reconnect alumni of Sacred 

Heart and Serra Catholic and 

introduce them to Blanchet 

~ “a new place to call home.” 

The Committee was honored 

during Blanchet’s Founders Day 

event as the recipient of the 

2012 President’s Award for their 

tremendous support of Blanchet 

Catholic School.
