Blanchet was voted the Best Private School and
Best High School in the Statesman Journal’s
“Best of the Mid-Valley” poll! More than
400,000 votes were tallied during the three
week on-line balloting period, and voters put
Blanchet at the top!

Dear Blanchet Catholic School Community,
The 2008-2009 school year was one of the most memorable in school history. We celebrated many “firsts” including:
• Our first team state championship when the girls volleyball team swept the tournament in the fall and earned dozens of awards.
• The first time we closed school for a week to allow our full-time faculty, staff and administrators to attend an extraordinary
professional development opportunity in California – the National Catholic Educational Association Convention in April.
• The first 10 year reunion of a Blanchet graduating class – our ‘pioneer’ class of 1999. A gathering was held in early August.
• The first time a school category was included in the Statesman Journal’s “Best of the Mid Valley” contest. Blanchet supporters were enthusiastic in
their voting and helped us garner 1 st prize wins in the “Best Private School” and “Best High School” categories.

• The first time public and home schooled 6 graders were invited to apply for Blanchet Catholic School admission. We will begin the 2009-2010 school
year with our first class of 25 sixth graders.
I encourage you to take the time to read about these and other highlights of our spectacular year in this issue of the President’s Report. Your continued
support has made all of our successes possible.

chair’s message
Blanchet is the best for many reasons – but the best of all reasons is that we combine the forces of faith and family in our
academic programs and school activities.
The force of faith is summed up in our motto, “Animo et Fide,” or in English, “By Courage and Faith.” Blanchet
reflects the effort of a group of dedicated citizens, reflecting on their own faith values, who came together to support a
school which provides the youth of this community with a faith foundation and education for the future.
The founders of Blanchet included not only parents of upcoming students but also non-parent community members.
They all understood that a faith-based education is important to everyone in our community.
When we talk about “family,” we do not simply mean the biological family. Yes, biological families are a core element
of our community. Yet, Blanchet itself is a type of family, where we all care for one another and strive to work for the
greater good for all. This, too, is a reflection of the values of our faith.
What we have at Blanchet, in terms of excellence, is neither magical nor mysterious. It is a reflection of core values, which we have built upon in
everything from academics to activities and from programs to facilities. We want our young people to be equipped with the capability to make a
difference… and we are doing the best job possible, every day. That is what excellence is all about.

Mara Hanawalt attends
Girls State
Junior Mara Hanawalt attended the American
Legion Girls State program held at Willamette
University in June. Girls State participants take part
in mock government, including being a member of
6
the state congress, engaging in a mock
trial and running for statewide office.
Also, participants at Girls State are
visited by numerous speakers from the
state government including the president
of the senate, the speaker of the house
and the secretary of state.
Mara learned about Girls State as a
member of Blanchet’s speech and debate team. After giving
a speech for the American Legion High School Oratorical
Contest, auxiliary members encouraged Mara to consider
Girls State and very generously offered to sponsor her to
attend the program. “Because of their support, I had the
opportunity to benefit from a once in a lifetime experience,”
commented Mara. “Girls State was an incredible opportunity
where I had the chance to get to know many smart,
outspoken, kind and inspirational young women from many
backgrounds,” she added.
In April, 125 Blanchet students
participated in the American
Mathematics Competition.
Sophomore Justin Chen scored a
100.5 on the AMC 10 (the national
average is 65.2) and qualified to compete at the
state level in May at the University of Oregon.
Justin swept the state competition, finishing in
first place at the Algebra 2 level!
Andre’ Wyatt - National Merit

Blanchet graduate Andre’ Wyatt
was named a Commended
Student in the 2009 National
Merit Scholarship Program and
joins 19 other Blanchet students
who have been honored by this
prestigious organization.
Andre’ earned the title of
Commended Student by placing among the top
five percent of more than 1.5 million students
who entered the 2009 competition by taking the
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test.
Additionally, Andre’ was honored in May as a
Statesman Journal Academic All Star and was the
Class of 2009 Valedictorian.

forward to enjoying her
senior year, she is also
focused on life beyond
high school. “While the
thought of being a senior
is very exciting, it also

ings anxiety concerning what comes next in
life,” commented Hillary.
To calm her worries, Hillary decided to attend a
pre-college program held at Pepperdine University.
The program is a way for high school juniors to
get a taste of college life by taking two courses
over a period of four weeks. During those four
weeks, students live in a dorm and experience the
life of a college student. “I thought the program
was a perfect way for me to get a feel for college
life and see if I could handle living so far away
from home,” Hillary explained.
Hillary applied for and was accepted into the
program along with just eight other girls. She took
psychology and a public speaking class alongside
several Pepperdine students. The classes were
extremely fast paced, required a minimum of 80
pages of reading each week and included a final
exam.
Students enjoyed several extracurricular activities
as well including a visit to Universal Studios,
Hurricane Harbor, Six Flags and The Hollywood
Bowl.
Hillary commented, “I am so glad I took part in
this amazing program. It really has calmed my
nerves about the future. I now know that I am
ready for college!”

teacher, this new class will offer
college students on a ship around the world. Her
college-prep curriculum taught in a Gospel

The ship sailed to Spain, Morocco, Namibia,
South Africa, Mauritius, India, Thailand,
Vietnam, China, Japan, Hawaii, through the
Panama Canal to Guatemala and finally to
Florida. Students and guests had four or five days
to travel within each country.

These fifty-five members of the Class of 2009
were offered an amazing $2.2 million in
scholarship funds!

“We got to hike with wild baboons in South
Africa, and India was very different than I had
imagined. I also really enjoyed Vietnam because
we were able to help out at an orphanage in Ho
Chi Minh City,” remarked Maddy.
“It was really cool to get to live on
a ship. The trip was amazing and I
had a great time,” she said.
After returning from her long
journey, Maddy shared hundreds
of photos and spoke about her
experiences to her Blanchet
classmates.

Christmas shared with PBNC
Blanchet was blessed this Christmas with an
extraordinary gift from Salem businessman
and philanthropist Larry Tokarski. With a very
generous donation, Blanchet students were able
to purchase gifts for the employees and residents
of the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in
Mt. Angel. This was a tremendous opportunity
that allowed Blanchet students to bring cheer to
some of society’s most vulnerable citizens – the
elderly. Mr. Tokarski also set a wonderful example
for the school by demonstrating how one person
can make a significant impact on hundreds of
people’s lives with a single action. Mr. Tokarski
began facilitating a relationship between
Blanchet Catholic School
and Providence Benedictine
Nursing Center in 1998
when he started Blanchet’s
first Friends of Benedictine
Service Club (F.O.B.) and
encouraged students to share
their time, compassion and
friendship with the nursing
center residents. The FOB
club has since developed
into one of the most popular
activities on campus.
Seventh and eighth grade students
celebrated Earth Day by
participating in a cleanup
service project at Camp
Howard in April. Camp
Howard is a youth camp
operated year-round
by the Catholic Youth
Organization (CYO) and
Camp Howard.
The annual “All Schools
Mass” brings together
nearly 700 Salem
Catholic school students
in recognition of National
Catholic Schools Week.

offer a unique
opportunity for students
to grow personally and
spiritually.
Leslie Mays attends lead america
Leslie Mays will begin her senior year at Blanchet
this fall. Blanchet counselor Jim Prinslow
nominated Leslie to attend the 2009 Lead
America Medicine and Healthcare Conference
held at the University of California at Berkeley.
The conference offers an exploration of the
endless opportunities available to young adults
interested in the medical profession. The main
focus of any Lead America conference is
leadership, and the following quote served as the
mantra throughout the conference: Be the change

that you wish to see in the world.
Lead America is adamant
about students getting
involved in their communities
after attending the conference.
“As soon as I got home from
the Medicine and Healthcare
conference, I contacted the
volunteer coordinator at
Salem Hospital and I’ll be volunteering there
for the next six months,” reported Leslie. “I am
very grateful for the contributions I received
from businesses, family members and friends that
supported me and made this great and inspiring
experience possible,” she said.
Sugarfest - Sam Estes
Sam Estes and William Barnes, Blanchet juniors,
recently organized a benefit concert in support
of the American Diabetes Association. The
concert, cleverly named “Sugarfest,” was held at
the Grand Theatre in downtown Salem on July
17. There were seven bands from Salem, Portland
and Seattle that participated. William and Sam
also performed in each of their own bands, The
Volks and The Madrigals.
Sam’s love for music and the fact that
he is a diabetic led him to begin this
project. “Because of what I’ve learned
about community service at Blanchet, it
seemed very clear that I should tie the
concert into a charitable organization.
Because of my involvement in DECA,
it also made sense to not only do this for
service hours but to also work it into a
DECA project that could be presented at
the state conference in March 2010,” Sam
said. William Barnes is also involved in
DECA and the Salem music scene
so Sam made the decision to bring
him on board. William handled
the business end of the concert
while Sam took care of recruiting
bands and finding sponsors to help
underwrite the cost. “Together we
logged over 200 hours organizing
the event, and we learned how to
work together as a team,” reports Sam.
Over 250 guests attended the concert,
and a total of $1,400 was raised for the
American Diabetes Association. The two
are also planning additional activities
throughout the school year including a
Diabetes Awareness Week.

stellar productions this year. “Each Blanchet
performance is a showcase of student
creativity,” remarked President Charles E. Lee.

In June, eighth grader Katherine Carey attended
Blanchet’s popular summer drama camp. “It was
a fun-filled camp that had non-stop activities every
day, making it very fun and unpredictable,” she
said. The camp offers a multitude of activities and
drama games including slideshow, secretary, scenes
from a hat, and creating a final dance and play.

Becca Swisher. “All of these wonderful directors
helped make the drama camp unique with all their
skills and talents. I always looked forward to the
next day of camp because it was very exciting and
fun and made you want to go back for more,” said
Katherine.

Blanchet Hosts Signature Project
Award Winning Artists
On October 30, the
Fine Arts Parents
Group sponsored an
interactive school
assembly called
The Signature
Project. This project
explores the human
spirit through art,
music and technology. The core of the project is
a 76 ft. x 36 ft. mural and a live performance by
Irish artist Patrick Dunning. The volleyball team
and several staff members had the opportunity to
join over 300,000 people whose signatures already
comprise the fabric of this monumental artwork.
Lindsey Pirelli (Class of 2008) established a
scholarship for Blanchet students involved in
the visual arts. The 2009 recipients of the Pirelli
Art Scholarship were incoming seventh grader
Sophia Tolento, freshmen Ricki Santibanez
and Anna Fitzgerald, junior Elisa Rasmussen
and senior Lauren Tolento.
Lindsey’s scholarship funds helped these
budding artists attend art programs at
Willamette University, Chemeketa Community
Blanchet’s choir and band, under the
direction of Jacob LaCombe, Heidi
Wiegal and Amy Severin, continue to
dazzle audiences with their musical
talents.
Freshman Lauren Eliason and
juniors Joe Sacchi and Lily Breshears
participated in the Oregon Music Educators
Association district solo and ensemble festival
in March. Joe was then selected for the state
competition. Both Joe and Lauren were
also accepted to the

Youth Choral Academy

Lady Cavs earn first state
team title
Blanchet’s Lady Cavaliers volleyball team
brought home the school’s first OSAA State 2A
Team Championship last fall with an amazing 32
- 2 overall season record.
Several key players received top honors for
their tremendous skill and sportsmanship on
court including senior Irene Walters who was
named the 2008 2A All-State Volleyball Athlete
of the Year. This is the first time in Blanchet
history that one of its athletes has earned this

distinction. “It is such a great honor to be given
this award,” said Walters. “What a great way to
finish my senior year.”
Bashaw - Coach of the year
Because of her dedication and the success of her
team, Coach Bashaw was named Tri-River Coach
of the Year for the sixth year in a row, 2008 State
2A Coach of the Year, Oregon Athletic Coaches
Association 2A Volleyball Coach of the Year and
the Portland Trailblazers and Northwest Ford
Coach of the Year.

Joe Monson and Martha
Choate Monson
Joe Monson and Martha Choate, both graduates
of the Class of 2003, were married on June 27
in Portland at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church by
Monsignor Timothy Murphy.
Joe completed his engineering degree at OSU
in 2008 and began working for Shimmick
Construction Company in California. Currently
he is working on the seismic rehabilitation of the
Tujunga Dam originally built in the 1930’s.

Martha completed her first year of
medical school at the University
of Vermont this spring and has
honored in all but one of her
courses. “The material is just
fascinating and I enjoy all of
the clinical challenges that we
encounter,” said Martha. She
will take her first national boards
exam in February and will then
spend the remaining 2.5 years on the hospital
wards doing several rotations including surgery,
internal medicine, family medicine, ob/gyn,
emergency medicine and more. Martha spent
four weeks this summer working alongside an
ob/gyn from Salem. “I worked in the clinic
interviewing and examining patients, assisting on
smaller procedures and had the great privilege of
scrubbing in and assisting in c-sections, labor and
deliveries and other gynecological surgeries at
Salem Hospital,” Martha reports.
Kristin Crocker
This July, alumna Kristin Crocker, Class of 2007,
had the chance of a lifetime. She attended a
summer class at Regis University that culminated
in a trip to Ireland. Eleven students accompanied
by three professors visited areas of historic and
literary value. Some of the
most memorable places visited
were the Ring of Dingle
(located in southwest Ireland
on the coast), Blarney Castle
(with the famous Blarney
Stone), William Butler Yeats’
tower, Kilmanham Gaol in Dublin, and the Aran
Islands.
“The Irish are amazing people with a totally
different mindset. All the people we talked to
wanted to quiz us on our country’s history, our
president, our policies and our home towns,”
Kristin said. “They told us stories of the saints
and fairies, sang us songs like “Galway Bay” and
recounted memories about their own lives.” The
tour host told the students to “live lovingly and
love living.” These words summarize perfectly
the outlook of the Irish.
Alumni Weekend
Blanchet held its first
Alumni Weekend
during the first
weekend of August.
All alumni and their
families were invited
to activities on campus

including a dessert social, barbeque and Frisbee
golf tournament. Self-guided tours of the campus
were offered, and
administrators were
on hand to provide
updates about the
school. The Alumni
Weekend is a new
annual tradition at
Blanchet. Alumni are encouraged to remember
that every first weekend of August the school will
hold reunion activities.
Class of 1999 Celebrates its Ten
Year Reunion
Blanchet’s first graduating class held the school’s
first 10 year reunion on Saturday, August 1.
Twelve members of this class of fifteen (there
were also two exchange students in the class of
1999) attended the gathering. This inaugural
class has often been referred to as Blanchet
“pioneers” since they were the first students on
campus. Many memories were shared at the
reunion including the frequent rug-burns suffered
by playing sports in the gym on a carpeted floor,
traveling incredibly long distances for athletic
competitions, carrying books to class since the
school did not yet have lockers, and dances
that were held in
the high school
commons (now
the Wiegand Arts
Center). Several
members of the
class attended
Alumni Weekend events and had the opportunity
to tour the campus. When the class of 1999
attended Blanchet, the school rented only a small
part of the building. Alumni were overwhelmed
with all the
changes and
renovations made
to the campus
since they had
graduated and
were excited to
hear about Blanchet’s successes. President Charles
Lee said, “I have always been so proud of the class
of 1999. There were many challenges associated
with being the first students at Blanchet, and this
class made a significant impact on the school’s
development. It was wonderful to reconnect with
the class and to hear about their families, jobs
and goals. I hope our younger classes of alumni
follow their lead and plan on participating in their
upcoming reunions.”

Legacy Alumni
Blanchet continues to
connect with alumni of
Sacred Heart Academy
and Serra Catholic
High School. Several
socials were held
during the school year,
including gatherings at a football game, basketball
game and the spring musical. An alumni
newsletter is printed quarterly and is available on
Blanchet’s website. The school is encouraging
alumni of these schools to consider Blanchet “a
new place to call home.” The photo above shows
a group of alumni and spouses from the Sacred
Heart and Serra classes of 1959 who are planning
an upcoming reunion.

attended Grandparents Day
in May. This is the largest
group of grandparents
that has ever visited
Blanchet. Guests enjoyed a
complimentary breakfast,
Mass celebrated by Fr. Ben
Innes, tours and the chance to be photographed
with their grandchildren.
Founders Day
Blanchet’s Founders Day event took place in
March and included recognition of Blanchet
faculty, staff, volunteers and board members.
The Distinguished Educator of the Year Award
is the highest honor a faculty member can receive
at Blanchet. High school Vice Principal Carlton
Wise is a deserving recipient of this prestigious
honor. Mr. Wise is extremely dedicated to
Blanchet and works countless hours preparing for
class, grading papers, and providing supervision

at Blanchet activities and
athletic contests. He is a
very organized teacher and
challenges his math students
to do their best. As the
administrator in charge of
discipline, he faces many
challenges on a daily basis.
However, Mr. Wise believes
in every student’s potential
and helps all Blanchet students succeed. He is a
trusted and valued leader and is viewed by many
on campus as a mentor.
The 2009 President’s Award was given to board
member and parent Donna Garaventa. Donna
has been a member of the Blanchet board since
1998 and has served as the Chairwoman of the
HR & Policy Committee and the Nominating
Committee. She is a graduate of Sacred Heart
Academy and is a member of the steering group
for the newly formed Legacy Committee. Donna
lends her hand at many school activities and
serves as a member of the Salem Catholic Schools
Foundation Board. She is the proud mother of
six children, all of whom have attended Blanchet.
When her youngest daughter graduates from
Blanchet, this award winner will celebrate 16
straight years with children enrolled at the school.

authentic Irish food and drink while enjoying
traditional Irish entertainment. The Coen
siblings (Colleen, Erin and Tim) performed Irish
dances with fellow team members from the An
Daire Dance Academy, Blanchet teacher, Mr.
Nickerson, played traditional Irish instruments
and the Flying O’Carolan Brothers provided an
excellent music concert. Mrs. Hoy won the “Best
Irish Brogue” award, Mrs. Lieder told the “Best
Irish Joke” and Mr. & Mrs. Moehring (friends of
Jim and Jane Kreitzberg) were recognized as the
“Best Dressed.” This festive event was hosted by
the Blanchet Board of Directors.

President Lee Honored at NCEA
Convention
President Charles E. Lee was one of seven
recipients of the National Catholic Educational
Association’s (NCEA) 2009
Catholic Secondary Education
Award. The award recognizes
outstanding leadership
and distinguished service
to Catholic education and
NCEA. Mr. Lee was honored
at the NCEA Convention
in Anaheim, CA on April
15 in the company of thirty
members of Blanchet’s administration, faculty
and staff. Mr. Lee raised over $30,000 from
individuals and businesses to fund this trip. The
NCEA Convention offered over 200 education
and staff development courses as well as several
outstanding speakers and presenters.
Kevin Mannix, Chairman of the Board of
Directors of Blanchet, who nominated Lee for the
award, said, “Chuck has been a dynamic leader
for Blanchet. I am delighted he has received this
well-deserved national recognition. His excellence
in leadership has helped Blanchet shine.”

Blanchet Celebrates fifth
anniversary of mortgage pay-0ff
Thanks to the very generous support of several
key benefactors, Blanchet was able to pay off
its mortgage in 2005. The school owns, free
and clear, its entire facility including its twentytwo
acre campus. A celebration honoring the
twelve individuals and businesses that made
this tremendous achievement possible was
held on Monday, May 18, the fifth anniversary
of the mortgage retirement. Each donor
was recognized and presented with a plaque
thanking them for their investment in Blanchet
and in the success of its students.

fundraisers
Donations and fundraisers accounted for over
20% of the school’s $3,028,526 budget during the
2009-2010 school year. Blanchet parents are asked
to annually contribute to three major fundraisers.
These fundraisers, described below, netted over
$202,103 for students and programs. The school
is incredibly grateful for the continued generosity
demonstrated by its supporters.
12th Annual Benefit Auction ~ Roar of the Wild:

made this an event to remember. Dozens of
students sang and danced to music from Disney’s
“Lion King.”

the “Fund an
Item” portion
of the evening
that netted over $30,000 for tuition assistance. A
crowd of nearly 400 parents and donors enjoyed
socializing with their friends and bidding on
hundreds of donated items. While the economy
significantly impacted this event’s proceeds, over
$84,000 was raised to help support Blanchet
operations.
Student Fundraiser ~ Raffle
This year’s raffle offered ticket buyers the chance
to win one of seven prizes including a Traeger
Texas BBQ, pearl necklace, earrings & bracelet,
round trip airfare on American Airlines, a
Nintendo Wii, Victoria B.C. vacation, flat-screen
television and a Blazer ticket package. Every
Blanchet student was asked to sell at least ten $10
tickets, and many exceeded their goal. This raffle
raised $34,930 for school programs.
“Marking a Milestone” Annual Fund
This year’s Annual Fund kicked off the school’s
celebration of Blanchet’s 15th anniversary,
which will be commemorated during the 2009-
2010 school year. The annual fund appeal
encouraged supporters to help “mark a milestone”
by increasing their support of this important
fundraiser. The 2008 Annual Fund netted $87,715.
Other Development Office Highlights
• Grants: Over $200,000 in foundation grants
were received during the 2008-2009 school
year. Grant funds were used to complete a
number of facility projects including installing
new carpet, seating and restrooms in the
Wiegand Arts Center and renovating several
hallways and classrooms with carpet and
paint.
• Archbishop Blanchet Society: The Archbishop
Blanchet Society grew to include 42 donors
who donated nearly $241,000. Blanchet
Society members commit to donating a
minimum of $1,000 annually. Proceeds from
this donor society allow Blanchet to help meet
immediate needs while allowing time to build
an endowment fund.
• Endowment: The school’s endowment fund
grew to $121,093 during the 2008-2009 school
year. Blanchet is working to promote the
importance of planned giving and bequests
to grow the school’s endowment fund. In
the future, interest earnings from Blanchet’s
endowment will help fund student tuition
assistance.

Blanchet receives E.L. Wiegand grant
The E.L. Wiegand Foundation in Reno, Nevada
generously awarded Blanchet a $65,425 grant this
spring. These funds are being used to complete a
number of improvements to the school’s Wiegand
Arts Center including new lighting, acoustic
panels, lumber storage, signage, sound board
expansion, dressing room sink, ticket/concessions
booth window and more.
The school previously received a $94,292 grant
from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation in 2003 that
funded a stage curtain and state-of-the-art sound
and lighting equipment for the theater.
President Charles E. Lee said, “We are very
grateful to the E.L. Wiegand Foundation for its
continued support of the fine arts programs at
Blanchet Catholic School.”
*One-third of all Blanchet families receive financial
assistance towards their tuition bill. The average tuition
assistance award is $1,700. The Blanchet Board of Directors
is committed to ensuring that no child is denied a Blanchet
education due to the inability to pay. Over $240,000 in
tuition assistance is distributed annually. These funds are
raised through individual donations and foundation support.
