AFRICA
HIGHLIGHTS
• Shell’s African production amounted to 0.4 million boe/d,
which is around 12% of our total 2008 production;
• Our Exploration & Production (EP) subsidiaries in the
region generated earnings after tax of $2.9 billion, 19% of
total EP earnings from subsidiaries;
• We are participating in the development of three key
projects in Nigeria: Gbaran Ubie, Bonga North West and
Forcados Yokri.
ALGERIA
Shell holds a production-sharing contract in the Zerafa permit
(Shell interest 60%). Exploration and appraisal drilling continued
there in 2008 in partnership with Sonatrach. The first phase of the
PSC ended and a two-year second phase was started in September
2008. We relinquished the Reggane Djebel Hirane permit in
2008.
CAMEROON
Shell has interests in the Lokele and Rio del Rey assets in
Cameroon. Production in 2008 was 13,000 b/d of oil. We also
have an interest in the Dissoni exploration licence area, where a
commercial discovery was made in 2006.

GABON
Shell discovered oil in the Gamba area of Gabon in the early
1960s. Today we have interests in nine onshore mining
concessions and exploitation permits and operate six of them.
Gabon is the second-largest oil producer for Shell in Africa with
30,000 b/d produced in 2008. Some 66% of Shell’s production in
Gabon is from the Rabi (Shell interest 42.5%), Toucan (Shell
interest 44.25%), and Gamba fields (Shell interest 100%).
An exploitation licence is being finalised for the Koula and
Damier fields in the Awoun permit. The three non-Shell-operated
concessions (Avocette, Coucal and Atora) expire between 2010
and 2021.
We also hold the Igoumou Marin permit in ultra-deep water and
two exploration and production-sharing contracts, BC9 and
BCD10, offshore Gabon.
LIBYA
Shell and the Libyan National Oil Corporation signed an LNG
development agreement in May 2005. This was for the
rejuvenation and upgrade of the existing LNG plant at Marsa Al
Brega and the exploration and development of five areas located in
the onshore Sirte Basin. Seismic data acquisition and analysis are
complete and exploration drilling started in 2008. Options to
expand Marsa Al Brega and build a new LNG plant are features of
the development agreement.
Shell also won the exploration concession Area 89 in December
2007 and the agreement was signed in 2008.
