GEOLOGICAL
ENGINEERING

OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS
APPLIED GEOPHYSICS ENGINEERING
· Focuses on a combination of
geotechnical, environmental as well as
minerals and fuels exploration.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
· Emphasizes groundwater flow,
contaminant migration, design of landfills
and environmental cleanup.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
· Focuses on site investigation, design of
foundations, tunnels, excavations, dams,
reservoirs, landfills, roads, railway grade,
slope stabilization, mine excavations and
forestry.
MINERALS AND FUELS
EXPLORATION ENGINEERING
· Concentrates on developing skills
in petrology as well as geology and
economics of ore deposits or petroleum
and coal. Foundation courses in
geotechnical and environmental are also
taught.
Geological Engineering students apply the principles of engineering,
chemistry and physics. This interdisciplinary program combines aspects of
earth sciences, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering with a fundamental
understanding of natural processes, materials in
the earth surface and near-surface environments.

· Assess land contamination and salination
· Evaluate landslide hazard and
design control strategies
· Design mine pit-slopes
· Design management strategies and
control structures for mine tailings and
waste rock
· Assess and develop conventional and
unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs
· Conduct geophysical surveys for
geotechnical or resource applications
