President – AWG International Committee welcome messages On behalf of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee and the nine participating Units, I am pleased to welcome the nearly 3,000 athletes, coaches, cultural performers, mission staff, parents, media and other visitors to the 20th edition of the Arctic Winter Games. When the first Games opened in Yellowknife in 1970, with a little over 500 participants from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska, there were more than a few northerners who knew that we had something special. Nearly 40 years later, with the Games returning to their origins, these visionaries have been proven correct. While the Arctic Winter Games have grown to include representatives from around the circumpolar world, it is still as popular and inspiring, with residents of many communities across the original Units today as they were in 1970. In fact, the host Northwest Territories team selection trials included representatives from 28 of the 33 communities, a truly astonishing amount considering the logistical and travel challenges involved. g e n e r a l i n f o r m a t i o n a n d e v e n t s – a c e l e b r a t i o n iv
As you watch and cheer our “Northern Stars Inspired by Dreams”, remember these athletes, some who have come from small communities in the Arctic, have had to work hard and travel many miles to participate and be the showcase of the 20th Arctic Winter Games. Best wishes to all of the competitors involved. Work hard, compete fair and remember, if you go home with new friends and fond memories you were a northern star inspired by the dream of the Arctic Winter Games. Enjoy the Games!
