What is National Night Out?
National Night Out (NNO) is a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of
Town Watch and cosponsored locally by the Pinole Police Department. It will involve over 9,500 communities
from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 32 million
people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for,
and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community
partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting
back.
How can our neighborhoods participate in this year’s National Night Out?
From 7 to 10 P.M. on August 2nd, residents in neighborhoods throughout Pinole and across the nation, are
asked to turn on outside lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
Many neighborhoods throughout Pinole will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties,
cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests and youth activities.
When should we begin organizing?
As soon as possible. The best National Night Out programs are those that begin their planning well in advance
of the event.
Is National Night Out just for already established Neighborhood Watch areas?
NO!! National Night Out is for all blocks and neighborhoods in our community.
Can we begin our activities earlier than 7 P.M.?
Certainly. The 7 to 10 P.M listed hours are a suggested national timeframe. Tailor the day/night to best
accommodate your neighborhood. Early starts are fine. Late starts (past 7 P.M.) though can be a problem
because residents will have already settled into other evening activities.
