AMOWA National Conference 2011 elcome to our Meals on Wheels Bi-Annual conference. You will see in the program that the theme is More than just a meal. This really sums up what our great organisation is all about. We certainly provide healthy nutritious meals, but it is the daily contact with our clients that is equally as important as the meal. Clients tell us that they really look forward to the knock on the door from our Meals on Wheels volunteers. An amazing and interesting thing about Meals on Wheels is the diversity of services throughout Australia. Most states have different organisational structures, from individual services in Queensland and NSW, to services run by Red Cross in the ACT, northern Tasmania and the NT, Councils in Victoria, State and Local Government in WA and a state incorporated body in SA. Even with this great diversity, the common result is that it works very well and our clients are delivered a meal on each week day by a Meals on Wheels volunteer. This is a conference for you, the volunteer and service provider. The program is varied with topics which we believe will be of great benefit to you. There is something for everyone. It is also a great opportunity for you to network with other volunteers from other States. It is amazing what you can glean from talking with like-minded people who carry out the same tasks, but in a different way. You may be able to use some ideas to improve your efficiency or the way you currently work when you go back to your local service. I am sure you will enjoy the conference and I look forward to meeting with you in Melbourne. two aggie Beer is a cook, farmer, food author and food manufacturer. Originally from Sydney, she has worked in an amazing variety of jobs, from lift driver in a department store to assistant to a Senior Geologist in Libya. Together with her husband, she started the Pheasant Farm in the Barossa Valley in January 1979 that began as a farmshop and went on to become an award winning restaurant and now manufacturers a range of exciting foods such as pate, quince paste, verjuice and ice-creams. Many of you will know her from the ABC television program, The Cook and The Chef. She has also written seven best selling cook books that have garnered many awards. In 2010 she was named Senior Australian of the Year. Maggie is a passionate advocate of a good food life for every member of the community and is particularly concerned about the importance of it for the elderly. AMOWA is delighted she has agreed to give the keynote address at the conference.
AMOWA National Conference 2011 Clients on Film One of the highlights of the conference will be a number of short films shown throughout the program, which will let the recipients of our services speak for themselves. Award-winning film maker Polly Watkins (right) brings her considerable skills to the Clients on Film project. Her documentaries Liquid Stone - Unlocking Gaudi’s Secrets and Vietnam Nurses have been shown on SBS and the ABC television. Welcome Reception Attendance to the welcome reception is included in your registration ticket. This will be held from 5:30pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday 31 August in the trade exhibition hall, located on the ground level of the Crown Conference Centre which is attached to the Crown Promenade Hotel. This event will be a great opportunity to network with your colleagues while taking the time to mix with the exhibitors. Dress is smart casual. Gala Dinner The dinner will be held at the f a m o u s Melbourne Aquarium, a 10 minute walk from Crown Promenade. A large Barrier Reef exhibit offers a dramatic centre show piece for the dinner and with special guest, Denise Drysdale this will be a night that should not be missed. It is an additional charge for dinner, and seats will be limited. To ensure your place, please book your dinner ticket on the registration form. Community Chef Kitchen For those delegates interested in visiting the new Community Chef Kitchen, there will be an optional tour at the commencement of the conference. The tour will depart from the Crown Promenade on Wednesday 31 August at 1:30pm and you will be back at the hotel in time for registration. There is no charge to attend the tour but you must book to attend when you register. Denise Drysdale (TV personality and Gala Dinner special guest) Denise is well known from her time on The Ernie Sigley Show. She has won two gold Logies for the Most Popular Female Personality on Australian TV and two Silver Logies. Her entertaining and often show-stopping performances led Denise to appear in a number of regular TV shows until 1983. She then spent two years doing the Weekend Magazine and later Beauty and the Beast. In 1998 she had her own TV show called Denise and last year, after celebrating 50 years in the entertainment industry, she joined Network Ten’s The Circle. Martin Ralph Renowned as Australia’s friendliest comedian, Martin continues his presence at the cutting edge of comedy talent.
