Dear Mrs Walters, Firstly I would like to say Merry Christmas. I know that when you are reading this it will no longer be Christmas, well unless the postal strikes are ongoing….! But it is still Christmas here while I’m writing this to you. Thank you very much for your generosity in sending the Christmas welfare package. It often helps to forget that it is Christmas when you are away from home and family, but it helps a lot more to know that we are appreciated in what we are doing. And let’s face it everyone likes opening presents, especially out here. Christmas, thanks to your kindness, has definitely lifted people’s spirits. Most people are now walking around in uniform and what appears to be standard issue Santa Claus hats. I have seen the news that England has been hit with some quite bad weather. Its funny to me that people often wish for a white Christmas…..however everything grinds to a halt when wishes come true. I hope the weather has not affected your holiday season too much. Anyway I would like to thank you again not only for the parcel but possibly more important for your support at such a hard time. I would like to wish you and your family the best of luck for the coming year and those to follow. Its always nice to know that those back at home are thinking of you. We all enjoyed the kind gifts, so for those especially thank you. C Flight arrived en mass out here ten days before Christmas, plenty of time for our predecessors to depart and arrive back in time for the big day. We had a good time of it over Christmas delivering mail and presents over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Which to be honest was excellent, a great morale boost to the troops I have no doubt. Those of us not flying on Christmas Day all got together for Christmas lunch, which was again excellent. All being together seemed to help not seeing our families. Most people called home however which was nice. The Sun newspaper donated 15 minutes of talk time to us all so that was very well received. 8 With Christmas and New Year over we are all looking forward to 2010 and our return to the UK. However in the meantime we will continue to fly and get on with the job in hand out here, glad to be able to make a difference. We look forward to meeting you all again at our next function. Kind Regards, “Paul”, Flt Lt., 1310Flt Aircrew, OP Herrick Horners Golf Society The Horners Golf Society (H.G.S.), under their President Past Master John Webb, had two of its own meetings during 2009 and took part in competitions along with several other City Companies, including the Worshipful Companies of Actuaries, Barbers, Fuellers, Insurers, Tallow Chandlers and Tin Plate Workers. The H.G.S. held its second event of the year in September at Burhill Golf Club and the winners were :- Singles : Horner Jack Bunyer Guest Ione Inman Foursomes : Anthony McLelland & Ione Inman There were notable successes in the inter-livery competitions. Our team of Jack Bunyer, Richard Graham and Iain McGrory won the Fuellers trophy and this was followed by us soundly defeating the Barber-Surgeons in our annual challenge match. Congratulations also go to Anthony McLelland who won the individual prize at the Ray Jeffs Cup in which 25 teams of 4 take part. On 27 th January 2010 the Society held its 3 rd Annual Dinner at the National Liberal Club attended by 28 members and their guests. A thoroughly enjoyable evening culminated in a quiz which included some rather sticky questions on the rules of golf. Jack Bunyer receives the winner’s trophy from Miles Baird
H.G.S. visit to Mijas, Spain After a successful season on the circuit four members of the HGS visited Southern Spain in October. Miles Baird, Jack Bunyer , Philip Marchant and Anthony McLelland played three courses - Mijas Los Olivos, El Chaparral and Santa Maria over three days in perfect weather. John Webb and Miles Baird with Guest winner Ione Inman Jack, Anthony, Philip and Miles before teeing off, all smiles in their smart HGS shirts. A new trophy, a model ship fashioned from horn, which was presented by Simon Baldwin-Purry, was awarded to Philip Marchant who played three excellent rounds to take first prize.
