This makeshift hospital grew out of the stone of the streets<br />

because earthquake victims feared going inside.<br />

Just a few days after seeing earthquake<br />

footage from Haiti, Dr. Ralph <strong>Abraham</strong>, a<br />

<strong>Louisiana</strong> Wing mission pilot and Civil Air<br />

Patrol captain, received an e-mail from the Flying<br />

Physicians Association outlining ways he and other<br />

medical professionals could help. Among the options<br />

was a relief trip with Hospitals for Humanity, a<br />

nonprofit organization that provides health care to<br />

people in underdeveloped countries.<br />

After arranging for extra assistance at his north<br />

<strong>Louisiana</strong> clinic of nearly 15 years, <strong>Abraham</strong> joined<br />

other members of the Hospitals for Humanity relief<br />

team — an orthopedic surgeon, an anesthesiologist, an<br />

ophthalmologist, an ob-gyn, an emergency room<br />

physician and a host of highly trained nurses and<br />

logistics personnel — for the trip to Haiti.<br />

“I knew we had reached our destination when I<br />

could no longer see lights shining from the ground,”<br />

he said.<br />

Despite the lack of electricity and even though their<br />

arrival approached the midnight hour on Jan. 20, the<br />

airport was still full of activity.<br />

“Planes — mostly U.S. military cargo — were<br />

landing or taking off every few minutes,” <strong>Abraham</strong> said.<br />

“It was quite a sight.”<br />

The following morning, after sleeping alongside their<br />

supplies and being shaken by an aftershock measuring<br />

magnitude 6.0, <strong>Abraham</strong> and his group began their<br />
