Living God’s Word
Discovering Our Place in the Great Story of Scripture
J. Scott Duvall And J. Daniel Hays
Focusing on the Bible’s overarching narrative and on how each section fits into it, two Bible
professors with pastors’ hearts invite students to experience the entire Bible and discover their
place in the big picture.
Each section of Living God’s Word deals with a portion of Scripture’s story and includes reading/
listening preparation, explanation, summary, observations about theological significance,
connections to the great story, and written assignments for further study. These features—
combined with the authors’ engaging style—make this an ideal introductory college text.
withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one
of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
As the book of Joshua draws to a close, we see Joshua calling the Israelites
to renew their covenant commitment and to pledge that they will continue to
serve God and obey his commandments.
Thus the book of Joshua is basically a “good news” book. Joshua, the primary
leader, is faithful to God and under his leadership the nation follows
God. God blesses them and empowers them to complete the task he has called
Christ: Jesus’ Message 147
A Jewish Understanding of the Kingdom
Presence of god
The Jews held strongly to these two important ideas — God’s present, universal
reign over all now and God’s future reign on the earth. They longed for
the day when God would enter this world, defeat his enemies, and establish
his kingdom on the earth.
Knowing this, you can imagine why Jesus’ message is considered outrageous.
He has the courage and boldness to say that now, with his coming, the
kingdom of God has actually arrived! While the Jews believed that God would
intervene at the end of the age to defeat evil and set up his kingdom, Jesus is
declaring that he is establishing God’s kingdom on earth now! This is radical
stuff. Jesus proclaims the kingdom, heals the sick, drives out demons, feeds the
hungry, and forgives sinners — all signs that the kingdom of God has arrived.
In Jesus’ words and actions, the kingdom of God has become a present reality
(Matt. 11:11 – 12; 12:28; 18:1 – 5; Luke 17:20 – 21).
Jesus urges people to come under the personal reign of God or, in other
