We’ve heard of some bars and restaurants which have found alternative imaginative uses for their old ashtrays, such as selling them to customers as commemorative souvenirs with the donations going to charity. But, depending on their design and condition, they could be used as paperweights, or used for storing loose change and other items, such as paper clips and pins.” ANTIQUES OF THE FUTURE? The first is the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall, which flew in a trained cigar roller from Cuba to roll each diner at a special lunch their own unique cigar, which was served with fine cognacs and whisky. Even-handedly, it has also arranged for the club’s resident therapist, Samir Mustafa, to help smokers who want to give up, using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Paul Bielby, manager of London’s oldest cigar shop, James J Fox & Robert Lewis on St James’s Street, says fewer places will be selling cigars, so sales will be concentrated on specialist stores. Cigar shops have a special dispensation that allows customers to smoke on the premises. Edward Sahakian, proprietor of Davidoff on St James’s, points out that cigars are a pleasure to be enjoyed and lingered over after a nice meal with good wine. Cigar aficionados are unlikely to pop outside for a smoke. Desmond Sautter, owner of Sautters of Mayfair on Mount Street, agrees. If people can’t smoke inside and are unlikely to smoke outside, they’ll end up smoking less. 33
