Going Dutch
DUTCH PORTRAITURE from the Golden Age is being
celebrated in the National Gallery’s latest exhibition.
Dutch Portraits: The Age of Rembrandt and Frans Hals
explores the range and variety of painted portraiture in the
Netherlands between 1599 and 1683 and gives insight into
the fashion, occupants and ambitions of a group of newly
affluent 17th century individuals.
The show focuses on the works of the masters of Dutch
portraiture Rembrandt and Frans Hals, but works by 29 other
Dutch artists also feature, many little known in the UK.
Highlight of the show is the rare loan of two of
Rembrandt’s most famous works: The Anatomy Lesson of Dr
Nicolaes Tulp and The Syndics (pictured), as well as Thomas
de Keyser’s dashing Loef Vredericx from the Maurishuis.

REDFERN GALLERY is stepping back in time with a reprisal
of its definitive 1957 show, Metavisual Tachiste Abstract –
Painting in England Today.
The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1957
show and brings together works by all bar two of the 37
artists who participated in the original Redfern show.
Metavisual Tachiste Abstract – Painting in England Today
was one of the first to survey British post-war art and
explored the intriguing cross-currents that were prevalent in
the art of the early 1950s. Highlights of the 2007 re-run
include major works by Gillian Ayres, Robyn Denny, Paul
Feiler (his January – Yellow and Black 1957 pictured), Terry
Frost, Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton and Ben Nicholson as well
as a 1965 study of wrestlers by Francis Bacon, which has
been hidden away in a private collection for 50 years.
