7. TRANSLATORS
• Locations, place names - it is
often preferable to keep place names
and locations in original English.
A transliteration may not be
intelligible because it is foreign
to the reader's language and s/he
may have only read it in English,
eg. the name of the suburb in her
documents and letters. Alternatively
a good compromise would be to
have the English name followed by
the transliteration. For example the
suburb name of Coogee would also
be phonetically translated as "Kugi"
in Macedonian Roman script.
• Good practice - it is the
requesting agency's responsibility
to check that the information
provided is correct such as telephone
numbers and addresses.
• number the pages (if not a leaflet or
single page)
• the target audience. This guides the
translator to use the appropriate
register, the level of language and
the way in which it is presented.
After receipt of the translated document:
• the document will need to be
checked by at least one bilingual
professional who works in your
related field, and/or a supervisor
• any changes to the original will need
to be sent back within a prescribed
period, and the changes re-translated
• ensure that the final translation is
returned on both hard copy and on
a computer disk.
When submitting a text for translation,
provide the translating service with the
following:
• departmental title on the front page
• date of publication
• the subject or title of the translation
and the language which it is to be
translated in. State this information
in English on the front page
