TARAWEEH SALAH
EIGHT RAKATS OR TWENTY?
Islamic Teaching
The Sunnah Number of Rakats of Taraweeh
There is a growing misconception among
present-day Muslims (especially the younger
generation) that the Taraweeh Salah which is
performed during the month of Ramadhan
constitutes eight rakats only. This is however
incorrect because:
1. It is in conflict with the Sunnah.
2. It is in conflict with the Ijmah [consensus] of
the Sahabah (R.A.)
3. It is in conflict with the Ijmah (consensus) of
the four madhahib.
THE SUNNAH IN THIS REGARD
Although many,
Ulema (e.g. Hafiz Ibn
Taymiyyah, Allamah
Subki and Qadi
Shawkani) are of the
opinion that
Rasulullah Sallallahu
alaihi wasallam never
fixed the exact
number of rakats for
the Taraweeh salah,
we are convinced that the Sunnah is twenty
rakats because the twenty rakat Taraweeh was
introduced by Hadrat Umar R.A. and Rasulullah
Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallarn had commanded us
to follow the Khulafa-e-Rashdeen (especially
Hadrat Abu Bakr and Hadrat Umar R.A.).
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:
"Hold firmly on to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of
the Khulafa-e-Rashideen." "Follow the two after
me (i.e. Hadrat Abu Bakr and Hadrat Umar.
THE IJMA [CONSENSUS] OF THE SAHABAH
R.A.
The twenty rakat Taraweeh that was introduced
by Hadrat Umar R.A. was unanimously
accepted by all the Sahabah R.A. without any
objection. In other words, they had ijma
[consensus] in this regard. Many ayat of the
The twenty rakat Taraweeh
that was introduced by Hadrhat
Umar R.A. was unanimously
accepted by all the Sahabah
R.A. without any objection.
Qur'an and ahadith of Rasulullah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam indicate the Shari authority
(hujjiyyah) of Ijma'. Among those are:
"And whoever opposes the Rasul after the
guidance (of Allah) has been manifested unto
him, and follows other than the believers way.
We appoint for him that unto which he himself
has turned, and we expose him unto Jahannam
- a hopeless journey's end." "My Ummah will
never unite upon batil (falsehood, deception)”.
In addition to the above, it should also be borne
in mind that consensus of the Sahabah (R.A).
represents the highest and most authoritative
form of ijma’.
A CLOSER LOOK AT
THE FOUR MADHAHIB
While Imam Abu
Hanifah(R.A), Imam
Shafi'i (R.A)and Imam
Ahmed bin Hanbal
(R.A). agree that the
Taraweeh Salah
comprises of twenty
rakats, there are two
narrations from Imam Malik According to one
narration he too agrees that the Taraweeh
Salah comprises of twenty rakats. Ibn Qasim
(R.A)has however narrated from Imam
Malik(R.A), that he preferred thirty-six rakats
and three rakats witr thereafter. (Most Maliki
textbooks however mention the twenty rakat
narration only).
This however does not mean that Imam Malik
rejected the ijma’ of the Sahabah R.A. The
standard practice in Madinah at that time was
thirty-six rakats and the reason for performing
thirty-six rakats was that the people of Makkah
would perform tawaf after every four rakats of
Taraweeh. Because tawaf can only be
performed in Makkah, the people of Madinah
would perform an additional four rakats nafl
2
MY BELIEFS AND ACTION CONFORM TO HADITH!!
17. Rasulullah (S.A.W) would have prevented women from performing Salah in the
Masjid.
‘Aishah (R.A) says: "If Rasulullah saw the condition of the women today, he would have
prevented them from coming to the Masjid just as the women of Banu Israeel were prevented from
coming to the Masjid."
(SahihBukhari Vol.11 Pg.120)
AL-ISLAH - Issue: 19 September 2008 / Ramadhaan 1429
salah after every four rakats of Taraweeh.
Considering the above and the fact that these
additional sixteen rakats (4x4) were regarded as
nafl (and not Sunnah mu'akkadah as in
Taraweeh) and were performed individually. We
may conclude that Imam Malik and the other
Fuqaha of Madinah also agreed that the actual
Taraweeh comprises of twenty rakats only.
NOTE 1
According to Sheikh Atiyyah Muhammad Salim,
from the fourth Hijri century, only twenty rakats
Taraweeh were performed in Madinah.
Thereafter in the 8th century when Imam Zainud-Din
AI-Iraqi was appointed the Imam of
Masjid-un-Nabawi the people would return to the
Masjid later during the night to perform the
additional sixteen rakats. The famous historian
As-Sa'ud writes that this practice continued until
the late ninth and early tenth Hijri century.
NOTE 2
It is not permissible to oppose the consensus of
the four madhahib. This is understood from the
fact that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
had instructed us to follow the Sawad-al-A'zam
(vast majority). Since all the other true madhahib
do not any longer exist, these four madhahib the
Sawad-al-A'zam.
NOTE 3
Many Ulema (e.g. Abu Ja'far Tahawi, Abu Eesa
Tirmidhi, Ibn Rushd Qurtabi, Ibn Qudamah
Maqdisi, etc.) Have discussed the divergent
opinions of the Fuqaha [jurists] in various topics.
None of them have ever mentioned a single
Faqih [jurist] who held the opinion that the
Taraweeh salah had eight rakats only.
THE NARRATION OF HADHRAT AISHA R.A.
Imam Bukhari R.A. has recorded a narration
from Hadrat Aisha (R.A) in which she says:
"Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would
never read more than eleven rakats - neither in
Ramadhan nor in any other month. He would
perform four rakats and do not ask of their
beauty and length. He would thereafter perform
another four rakats and do not ask of their beauty
and length. He would thereafter perform three
rakats." Hadrat Aisha R.A. says that she (once)
asked Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam
whether he slept before performing the witr
salah. Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam
replied: "O Aisha! My eyes sleep but not my
heart."
This Hadith is often cited in support of the claim that
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam performed
only eight rakats in the Taraweeh Salah. It is
however incorrect to make such a deduction from
this Hadith because this Hadith is discussing the
Tahajjud Salah and 'nafal Salah and not the
Taraweeh The words "nor in any other month"
are a clear indication that this Hadith is not
regarding the Taraweeh Salah. (Taraweeh is not
Performed in any other month besides
Ramadhan.)
There is a Hadith in which Hadrat Aisha R.A.
narrates that during the last ten days of
Ramadhan. Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam
would stay awake throughout the night and he
would exert himself in ibadah. It is possible that
upon hearing this narration from Hadrat Aisha
R.A. some people would think that compared to
the rest of the Year, Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi
wasallam read more rakats of Tahajjud Salah in
Ramadhan. In. order to dispel such doubts,
Hadrat Aisha R.A. explained that Rasulullah
Sallallahu alaihi wasallam’s Tahajjud Salah
always comprised of eleven lengthy Rakats
irrespective of whether it was Ramadhan or any
other month.
CONCLUSION
In view of the preceding discussion we
conclude that:
The Sunnah Taraweeh consists of twenty
rakats and not eight.
Ramadhaan
The Blessed Month
Maulana Abdur Rauf (D.B)
The month of Ramadhaan is a very great
blessing of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’aala. Who
can there be amongst the Muslims who is not
acquainted with the greatness and the Barakah
of this month? Allah Ta’aala has created this
month for the purpose of His worship. It cannot
be possible to ascertain the amount of mercy
that Allah Ta’aala confers upon His servants
during this month. It is impossible for us to
imagine these blessings. Nevertheless, even on
a normal daily basis, we have been granted with
enormous gifts of His Bounty, Mercy and
Beneficence, His Kindness and Favours on
every single day are innumerable and infinite.
The Mercy of Allah Ta’aala is constantly
showered upon us 24 hours a day; however, we
are so useless and incompetent that these
special moments continue to pass by us whilst
we lay wrapped up in carelessness.
Nevertheless, He continues to shower His
Kindness and Favours, it is only our fault that we
do not attain these favours, whereas there is no
deficiency in His endowment.
In Ramadhaan al Mubarak, we do tend to be a
bit more cautious with regards to our deeds,
thus, what tends to happen is that all of the
available good deeds are put aside for taking up
in Ramadhaan al Mubarak, if we are to pray
Nafil Prayers then it will be in Ramadhaan, if we
are to do Tilaawat then it will be in Ramadhaan,
if we are to stay awake during the night then that
too shall only be in the month of Ramadhaan,
and if we are ever to pray the optional prayers of
Ishraaq and Chaast then we shall pray these
also in the month of Ramadhaan, likewise, we
have taken all of the good deeds and put them
aside for taking up in Ramadhaan al Mubarak,
And then just as Ramadhaan al Mubarak
finishes, all of the good deeds stop too. Now
there is no Tilaawat, no Dhikr, no Nawaafil, no
Remembrance of Allah Ta’aala, and no
cautiousness with regards to refraining from sin.
During Ramadhaan al Mubarak we tend to be
ashamed of committing any sins by thinking
look! It is the month of Ramadhaan, why not
protect the gaze a little, however, as soon as
Ramadhaan al Mubarak passes by, the
licence to sin has been acquired again,
now there is no caution to refrain from
sin, and no effort to continue the good
deeds which had been commenced in the
month of Ramadhaan.
Allah Ta’aala has made Ramadhaan al
Mubarak as a Training Course. Once we have
completed this course and Allah Ta’aala has
created the spark and spirit within us through
the endowment of different forms of worship
such as, Fasting, Taraaweeh, I'tikaaf, Dhikr,
Tasbih and Tilaawat, it is now our duty to
maintain this spirit which has been created
within us. Hence, when we re-enter our normal
lifestyle after Ramadhaan, it is our duty to
maintain this enthusiasm.
Take the example of a white piece of cloth
which has just been recently washed. Even if it
gets stained by the tiniest speck, it will stand out
very much. Likewise, during the course of
Ramadhaan al Mubarak, our hearts, having
been washed of all sins, have become
completely clean. Now we must try our best to
safeguard the heart from all sins so that this
clean heart does not get stained by any sin, we
must see that it is not tainted by the stains of
sins and disobedience, we must free our hearts
from all sins.
Allah Ta’aala had given us the guidance and
ability to perform various acts of worship during
Ramadhaan al Mubarak. Although we cannot
continue performing the same amount of deeds
to the same extent after the month has passed,
we must continue to perform at least a
substantial part of these deeds. During the
month of Ramadhaan, we had been granted the
guidance to recite the Noble Qur'an, but what is
the reason for it to remain unopened for the rest
of the year, this would only mean that the Noble
Qur'an has only been kept in wait for the month
of Ramadhaan. Hence, we must resolve to
ensure that even after Ramadhaan al Mubarak,
not a single day will pass without the recitation
of the Noble Qur'an. Otherwise, it does not
make sense that we have recited a lot from the
Noble Qur'an during the month of Ramadhaan
and then we have locked it up in the Bookcase,
in wait for the next year's new moon of
Ramadhaan al Mubarak, so that we can pick it
up once again. This would be a case of grave
deprivation. Hence, we must make the routine
of reciting the Noble Qur'an on a daily basis.
Alhamdulillah, in Ramadhaan al Mubarak, we
are also blessed with the fortune of praying
Namaaz with the Congregation (Jamaat),
however, this does not mean that we have been
granted leave from the Masjid until the next
year, instead, we should make an effort so that
Allah Ta’aala grants us the guidance to pray
Namaaz with the Congregation in the future too.
AL-ISLAH - Issue: 19 September 2008 / Ramadhaan 1429
The Faraa'iz and Waajibaat which Allah Ta’aala
has made compulsory upon us are not such that
they are difficult for us or that we are unable to
perform them, if that was the case then why
would Allah Ta’aala have made them
compulsory. Hence, whatever the deed, be it
undertaking a compulsory act or saving
ourselves from sin, all are within our capability.
Allah Ta’aala has not made anything compulsory
which is beyond our capability. It is only a case
of courage and determination, Allah Ta’aala has
created great strength within the human
willpower, and we must now use this courage to
live our future in accordance to the pleasure of
Allah Ta’aala and in accordance to the
Commandments of the Shari’ah.
May Allah Ta’aala, through His Mercy, grant us
the guidance to act upon what we have learnt.
May He grant us the guidance to appreciate this
Blessed month of Ramadhaan and the ability to
spend this time in an appropriate manner. May
Allah Ta’aala also grant us the courage and
guidance after Ramadhaan to be steadfast in
Namaaz, to recite the Noble Qur'an, to be
engaged in the remembrance of Allah Ta’aala,
and to safeguard ourselves from all sins.
Aameen.
TWO ACTIONS WHICH DEPRIVE ONE FROM THE BLESSINGS OF RAMADHAAN
Extracted from TAUFAH E MAAHE RAMADHAAN by HADHRAT ARIFBILLAH HAKEEM AKHTAR SAHIB
There are two actions which are detrimental whilst in the state of fasting because they deprive one from
the blessings of not only the fast itself but of the blessings of the entire holy month of Ramadhan.
The first action from the two is the evil glance. “The evil glance” means to look towards those things
which Allah has forbidden you to look at. Allah Subhaanahu Wa ta’aalaa states in the holy Qur’aan;
“say to the believing men that they lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts and say to the
believing women that they lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts”.
In the above mentioned verse of the Holy Qur’aan Allah has repeated the same command that he has
given to men for the women and the reason behind this is to show the importance of this command for
both the sexes. Just as it is fardh and necessary for the men to keep their gazes lowered it is also
necessary for the women to keep their gazes lowered. If you ponder deeper into the meaning of this
blessed ayah you will find that Allah has ordered us to keep our gazes lowered at all times, not just
when there is someone or something haraam in front of us and the wisdom behind this is to make it
easy for one not to look at haraam when suddenly confronted by it, whereas if one is looking around all
the time it will make it very hard for them to control their gaze when confronted by haraam so we must
try and make it a habit to always keep our gazes lowered. May Allah ta’aalaa give us all the courage
and strength to keep our gazes lowered at all times. Aameen.
The second action which deprives a person from the blessings of Ramadhaan is Geebah (backbiting).
Backbiting is to speak ill of a believer behind his back, including matters concerning his beliefs,
appearance, or personality. Not only is backbiting restricted to words, but it also includes every
behaviour and action, whether it is done by body language or direct. The Prophet (s) defined backbiting
by saying: “Do you know what backbiting is? … It is to mention things which you dislike about your
brother. To mention things that are really found in the personality of your brother is backbiting. To
mention things that are not found in the personality of your brother is slander.” Backbiting is however
one of the meanest crimes and sins because Allah does not forgive such a person unless and until the
person who he as been backbiting about doesn’t forgive him first. Allah states in the Glorious Qur’aan:
Do not spy on one another or backbite. Would any of you like to eat the disgusting dead flesh of your
brother? Have fear of Allah; Allah accepts repentance and is All-merciful (49:12).” This act is so evil
that Allah has compared it to eating the meat of a dead brother. Anyone who is right minded would
abstain from this vile act. May Allah safeguard all of us from this evil, Aameen. Another point to note is
that Allah in this ayah has mentioned “dead brother” and not just brother because when one backbites
another brother he is not present at the time to defend himself just as a dead person is unable to defend
himself. Let us not become from those who talk about defenceless people and learn to look at our own
faults and try to rectify them so that we are worthy of showing our faces in front of our beloved prophet
and to our creator the almighty Allah after we breath our last.
My dear brothers and sisters the holy month of Ramadhaan is coming let us not waste our precious
time in talking about others and other fruitless activities and try to indulge ourselves in performing
those actions which are going to make Allah happy and refrain from all those actions which are
going to make him angry with us. May Allah give us all the ability to take maximum benefit
from this holy month of Ramadhaan and may he give us the strength to save ourselves especially
from the two above mentioned evils and all other evils as well and may he make it a means of our
success in this world and the hereafter. Aameen.
THE RAMADAN OF
HAZRAT MAULANA ILYAS
(RAHMATULLAH ALAYH)
Extracted from the book
Ramadhan by Hazrat Sheikh
Zakariyya Kandhelvi
Hazrat Sheikh Zakariyya
mentions about the Ramadan
routine of Maulana llyas
(Rahmatullah Alayh) , it was the
general habit of this uncle of
mine that whatever he was to
eat at night, was eaten at iftar
time. He did not have a habit of
drinking tea. His meal was
indeed a very simple one, not
the "meal of your fathers" as
mentioned in the Hadeeth of
Abu Dawood Shareef.
The hadeeth says that if the
time for Esha is at hand and the
evening meal was ready, then
the evening meal should be
eaten first, it so happened that a
certain person in surprise said to
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas
(Radiallahu Anhu) that I have
heard the word of Rasulullah
Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, and
if we are going to get busy with
the evening meal, the
congregational prayer will be
lost, thereupon Sayedina ibn
Abbas (Radiallahu Anhu) said:
"How do you think was their
meals? Do you think it was like
the meal of your fathers?"
in other words: Do you think it
was such a multiple course
meal, which took long time to
eat like that which your fathers
are used to? Their meal merely
consists of a few dates and a
cup or two of sattu.
And so was the meal of my
uncle in its simplicity, it
sometimes consisted only of
piece of roti. in any case, after
Iftar he performed Maghrib
Salaah. After maghrib It had
always been his practice to
perform long raka-ahs of
nafal but in Ramadan it
used to be so long that
he finished very near to
the for Esha.
After these nafals, he used to
lie down for a while In the Masjid
while some of his attendants
pressed his legs to restore
strength. About half an hour
later, It would be time for Esha
and Taraweeh, which he himself
led. After Taraweeh he again lay
down for a while, without there
being any Majlis.
I have not seen any of my
elders so punctual about
loud Zikr as my late uncle.
Very often he used to tell me
that he feared that he would fall
asleep as soon as he gave the
salaam for Witr and before a
pillow could be placed for him to
put his head upon. But when I
visited there or if he happened
to be my guest, that time after
Taraweeh was my time for
eating my evening meal. At such
mealtime, there always used to
be some fruits brought along by
some friends. My uncle
generally joined in and in fact, I
insisted on his partaking of it
with us, He then used to spend
about fifteen minutes or so with
us.
At night it was his fixed routine
to wake up at 12 o'clock, at
which time his attendants would
give him two boiled eggs, still
warm. The eggs were boiled
while he was busy with his toilet
preparations. Having eaten the
eggs, he busied himself with
Tahajjud Salaah. This continued
for a long time till the last
moments of Sehri time and then
he ate Sehri. There are times
when I have seen him with
morsel of food in his right hand
asking for someone to bring
water, with which to rinse his
mouth while at the same time
telling someone to call the
azaan. When the muezzin will
ascend onto the roof, he will
finish that last morsel, finishing
just as the azaan is called.
There is a little story about wild
figs. Hazrat and myself had a
relative, who is an imam
somewhere in Delhi. He used to
think my brother is the spiritual
guide of everybody and that
many things are disclosed to
him in Ramadan in an unseen
manner. Once I spent the night
there. At the time of iftar my
uncle asked is there anything to
eat?" some people replied:
"Only some wild figs which had
been left over from last night."
My uncle replied: "How nice!
Bring it."
At the time for Sehri, he again
asked whether there was
something to eat mid again they
told him: "Only some of the
same wild figs which had been
left over from last night."
Four or five such figs were then
taken for Sehri.
Uncle performed his Salaah at
the earliest time, in Ramadan he
did not have the habit of giving a
lecture after Fajar Salaah. This
was started by Maulana Yusuf
Sahib. Hazrat used to remain
seated on his musalla until
Ishraq time, making Zikr and
reciting his Wazeefas. All the
attendants used to perform Fajr
then go to sleep to wake up
some time later at their own
times. Hazrat remained busy
and performed Ishraq Salaah.
Generally, he felt a bit tired at
that time and if he had time he
lay down to rest for a while,
otherwise, he would give words
of advice for the jamaats about
to leave for Mewat or conversed
with guests, in accordance with
their standing, he treated his
visitors, looked after them and
bore the expenses of hosting
them himself. And if anyone,
who was a Sayed happened to
arrive, gave them extra special
attention. He even emphasised
to me the importance of showing
honour and respect to such
people, if any of his mureeds or
student was a Sayed, he was
prepared to pardon and overlook
his faults.
Once I complained to him about
one of his mureeds and
students, who was also one of
his attendants. Hazrat replied: "I
know of his fault, but he is a
Sayed".
Maulana Ali Mia writes in his
book: Maulana llyas and his
Deeni dawat "Maulana
Mueenullah Nadwi reports: 'I
was once sick during Ramadan.
My food was being brought to
me in bed where I lay sick.
Maulana llyas was about to
per-form his nafal Salaah and
said to the boy responsible for
bringing the food: leave the food.
I will take it to him. The boy did
not understand properly and
brought the food to Maulana's
room. When he had finished
Salaah, he said: 'I said to the
boy, leave the food, I will take it
away.' Thereafter Maulana
himself brought the food and sat
down by my bedside. For a long
time he sat there talking to me in
sympathetic terms and to
comfort me'."
The fact that Maulana
Mueenullah was a Sayed had a
lot to do with this great respect
shown to him.
Hazrat also had the habit of
sleeping for two or three hours in
the afternoon, but for the period
after Zuhr to Asr he retired to his
private room to converse with
visitors until Asr time, if he had
arranged to teach any students
some kitaab, this was the time
set aside for that. After Asr, he
busied himself with loud Zikr
until Maghrib time, in the days
other than during Ramadan, this
Zikr was performed in the latter
part of the night, after Tahajjud
till Fajar time. This could be
done at that time because in
those times Fajar was performed
a bit late at the onset of the
greyness of dawn.
Hazrat was a man who at all
times talked about Tableegh
and the Tableeghi movement,
just like the late Maulana Yusuf.
I have not seen any of my elders
so punctual about loud Zikr as
my late uncle. Before the last
few years of his illness, he
regularly recited the twelve
Tasbeehs and Zikr of the Ismi
Zaat in the latter part of the
night, while in Ramadan he did
so from Asr till Maghrib."
My uncle's third Haj journey
commenced in Ramadan.
Maulana AM Mia writes: "in
1351 Hijri he went for his third
Haj. The new moon heralding in
the month of Ramadan was
sighted in Nizamuddin and
Taraweeh was performed at
Delhi station. After the Taraweeh
Salaah he left for Karachi."
DEENI DAWAT
I had also gone to Delhi to see
him off at Delhi station to bid him
farewell. After having placed all
the luggage on board the train,
he performed Taraweeh Salaah
on the station. Not only those
who were to accompany him on
the Haj journey, but also a large
number of the residents of Delhi
followed him in Salaah. Many of
them had already finished their
Taraweeh in the various
Mosques In the city, where
Salaah finished quite early. They
were able to Join in this
congregation because this
Salaah started quite late.
Hazrat commenced his reading
from Alif Laam Meem and
performed the Taraweeh in his
own easy and comfortable
manner as he was used to doing
in his own Mosque. The train left
late and he had about one and a
quarter hours for the Taraweeh.
Hazrat was a man who at all
times talked about Tableegh and
the Tableeghi movement, just
like the late Maulana Yusuf
Sahib. He always engaged his
listeners in such talks, even
while eating and even in the
compartments of a train or on a
station. Many are still around
who will be able to testify to this
great missionary spirit of
Maulana Yusuf."
Running late for Eid Salah...
Mufti Yusuf Sacha (D.B)
If a person joins the Eid salaat at such a time when the imam has already completed saying the takbeers,
- If he joined the jama'at while they were still in the standing posture: he should immediately make the
takbeers even if the imam is busy with his qira 'at.
- If he joins the salaat while the imam is in ruku, then he should make his takbeers only if he feels that he will
still be able to catch up with the imam in his ruku. But if he fears that he will not be able to catch up with the
imam, then he should go straight into ruku. Instead of reading the tasbeehs in the ruku, he should recite the
takbeers. However, when he makes the takbeers in his ruku, he should not raise his hands. If the imam stands
up from the ruku before he can complete his takbeers, then this person should not try to complete them.
Instead, he should stand up with the imam. Those takbeers that he missed will be forgiven.
- If a person misses the first rakaat of Eid salaat, then when he stands up to complete it: he should first
recite Surah Faatihah, another Surah and then make the takbeers. Although, according to the rule,
he ought to have made the takbeers first, he should not do this. Because if he does this, then the
takbeers of both the rakaats will come one after the other. And this is not the method of any Sahabi.
Therefore, the rule has been given contrary to this.
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Mufti Zakariya Akudi (D.B)
Questions & Answers
8
Q. Please can you tell me what 3 days during
the year it is forbidden to fast?
A. According to Shariah, it is forbidden to fast on
five days. They are: • Eid ul Fitr, • Eid ul Adha, •
Three days of Tashreeq (i.e. three days after Eid
ul Adha).
Rasulullah (Salalaahu Alayhi Wasalam) is
reported to have said "Do not fast in these days
(Eid) for they are days of eating, drinking and
rejoicing".
Q. Does internal check up and vaginal
ultrasounds done by gynaecologist during
pregnancy invalidate the fast?
A. If no medication has been inserted into the
vagina, the fast will not be broken. If any gel or
other substance was inserted into the vagina, the
fast will break.
Ultrasound scanning does not invalidate the fast.
Q. Is it Makruh to fast on Fridays? Why?
A. It is Makrooh to single out Friday for fasting
because the Hadith prohibits it. Rasulullah
[Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] said? Do not
specify the day of Jumu’ah for fasting from
amongst the other days. (Muslim)
Q. If a woman has an infant child of around 2
months who is totally dependant on mother's
milk and if she fasts, it would be difficult for
her as well as milk would be insufficient for
the child which might be dangerous. In this
case, I have heard that there is "Rukhsat" for
the women from Fasting. Is it true? Is there
any Kaffara for the month of Ramadhaan if
she is unable to fast for some days or for the
whole month?
A. Yes, she is given this concession to abstain
from fasting if fasting is detrimental to her or to
the baby.
No, there is no Kaffaarah in this case. She only
has to observe Qadhaa for the missed fasts after
Ramadhaan whenever she is able to.
Q. Please could you tell me if the six days of
fasting in shawal, is to be done on the first six
days after eid or any days of shawwal?
A. The six days of fasting in Shawwal may be
kept anytime in Shawwal.
Q. Is it permissible for me to donate
blood while fasting?
A. Donating blood does not invalidate the fast.
However, one should consider one’s health if one
wishes to do so.
Q. One of my friends has a problem with his
kidneys he only has the one kidney, so this
means he has to drink lots of water, which
was advised for his condition by the doctors.
Please could you tell me if he has to still keep
his fasts during Ramadhaan?
A. This depends on the seriousness of your
friend’s condition. If it is possible for him to fast
without adversely affecting his health, then he
should fast. However, if fasting will aggravate his
condition and there is fear of his condition
deteriorating, then he should not fast. He will
compulsorily be obliged to make Qadhaa of the
missed fasts. It will be advisable for him to wait
until such a time of the year when the days are
short, thus, facilitating easiness in keeping the
Qadhaa. However, if this is also not possible and
he has no hope of recovering his health, then he
should pay the Fidya for every missed fast.
Q. Is it permissible for me to use the inhaler
during fasting? The inhaler contains
salbutamol (liquid medication). If it is not
permissible, what should I do when I get an
asthma attack during fasting?
A. Since the inhaler contains a medication
(salbutamol), the use of it in the state of fasting
will invalidate the fast. We advise you take
medication at the time of Sahri to avoid an
asthma attack. However, should you get the
attack during fasting, if there is no adequate
alternative which does not break the fast, you
may use the inhaler and make-up for that fast
later (make Qadhaa).
Q. Is it permissible to brush teeth while
fasting?
A. It is makrooh to use toothpaste during fasting.
One may use the miswaak
during fasting.
Q. Is it permissible to take an injection while
fasting and does that nullify the fast?
A. It is permissible to take an injection during
fasting. The injection does not nullify the fast.
(Ahsanul Fataawa vol.4 pg.432)
Q. A female starts menstruating while fasting
how should she conduct herself? What if she
stops menstruating during fasting?
A. If her menses commenced while fasting, she
can eat (not in public). If her menses stopped
AL-ISLAH - Issue: 19 September 2008 / Ramadhaan 1429
while fasting, she should abstain from eating,
drinking, etc. but (in both instances) make up
for the day by keeping a Qadhaa fast after
Ramadaan. (Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.214;
Rashidiyya)
Q. Whilst fasting is it necessary to avoid the
inhalation of talcum powder and spray
emanating from an aerosol e.g. a
deodorant?
A. In principle, anything going down the throat
while fasting nullifies the fast.
If the talcum powder or aerosol does not go
down the throat, it will not nullify the fast.
Islamic perspective on any issue you have come across in the media or in any other literature then,
SCIENCE OF TASAWWUF: NISBAT & IHSAAN
continued from issue 18
True definition of Ihsaan
Ihsaan has two meanings:
1. To show generosity and favour upon others.
please write to:
Al-Islah Q & A, P.O. Box 7861, Batley,
Mufti Moosa Badat (D.B)
2. To improve Aamaal (actions) and to carry them out with utmost concentration. This latter
meaning is applicable here. This has been clearly explained in the famous Hadith of Hazrat
Jibraeel Alayhis salaam in which after explaining the definition of Imaan (faith) and Islam he
enquired from the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam,
Spiritual Guidance
"What is Ihsaan?' The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam replied, "...to worship Allah in such a
manner that you are looking at him, and if this is not achievable then in such a manner that he is
looking at you.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thaanvi Rahmatullahi a/a/ says, that in this Hadith Ihsaan is mentioned
after Imaan and Islam, which indicates that besides the fundamental beliefs and physical actions there
is another thing called Ihsaan. Furthermore, by the explanation given in the Hadith it can be
understood that Ihsaan is a path of internal actions because without Ihsaan such complete and total
attentiveness is unachievable. Thousands of reliable people have given oath to its presence, which
can in no way be refuted. (Shariat & Tareeqat)
Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani Rahmatullahi Alai’s explanation
Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani Rahmatullahi Alai says, the fundamental thing is Imaan, which
resides in the depths of the heart. When this Imaan increases the effect becomes apparent upon the
body. By constantly adhering to the advice of the Prophets alaihimus salaam relating to Imaan and
Islam strength is gained. This strength, which is built up through good actions and constant
adherence, is known as Ihsaan. The Prophets alaihimus salaam were the greatest tutors of this art. In
conclusion, Imaan increases to become Islam, then Islam increases to become Ihsaan.
Further, he says, by systematically adhering to and constantly practicing upon the Shariat, which is a
combination of Imaan and Islam, Ihsaan begins to develop. This is also known as Tareeqat (path of
spirituality) by which one receives spiritual favour in this world. This is at times translated as Man
fat (true knowledge of Allah) and Irfaan (recognition of Allah).
Temptations at
University,
What should I do?
I am in
university and
there is a serious
problem, which a lot of
people turn a blind eye to, is
the environment on the
campus. The temptation to
get involved in a host of evils
is almost overwhelming.
Everything around one
incites one’s passions. One
is repeatedly confronted with
the scene of young people
becoming highly intimate in
public. A large number of
Muslim girls and boys,
perhaps the majority of
Muslims on campus, also
become entrapped in illicit
activities. To top it all, one
has to often contend with the
blatant flirting and advances
of Muslim and non-Muslim
girls.
Some apparently pious boys
(and girls) eventually
succumb to the temptations
around them. How then can I
be regarded as immune?
Please guide me in this
matter?
(The above is a summary of
numerous questions received
on this issue)
A. Muslim society requires
people in every field. However,
this need can never be pursued
at the expense of Imaan and
one’s Islamic values. Let alone
acquiring a university degree, if
one will have to break some
command of Deen in the
process of performing a nafil
ibadah, even the nafil
ibadah will be left out in
such an instance. For
example, a Muslim woman
wishes to raise funds for the
orphans and widows.
This is a very noble
deed. However, if this
will necessitate her
intermingling with nonmahram
men and
breaking the laws of
hijaab, she will not be
allowed to undertake the
charitable work.
Nevertheless, some interim
means that you must adopt to
save your Imaan and chastity
are mentioned hereunder. Do
remember though that adopting
these means in an environment
where immorality and
shamelessness are pouring is
like opening up an umbrella
when walking in heavy rain.
While the umbrella will help to
keep one dry to some extent,
one is bound to get wet .
Some of the means to adopt
are:
- Firstly, seek out a senior,
pious personality whom you
can easily relate to. Form a
strong bond with him and
discuss all your conditions with
him. Follow his advice strictly..
- Constantly engage in
Da’wah. Invite towards good
and forbid the evil — with
wisdom. Talk to the Muslims on
campus about the harms of sin.
Explain to them the reward for
perseverance. The more you
invite towards good and forbid
evil, the greater the chances
that you will be saved from the
fitna around you..
- Always
dress in
Sunnah attire.
Wear a
turban and
carry a tasbih
in your hand
(do not be
concerned
about what
others may
say). Fix your
gaze to the
ground when walking outside
or anywhere where you will
encounter women.
- Keep your tongue and heart
occupied as much as possible
in the recitation of istigfaar
(seeking forgiveness). Also set
aside some time daily to sit in
solitude and make zikr.
- Restrict yourself to the Musjid
on campus unless you are
attending any lecture. Do not
join friends who are not inclined
to Deen. While you should
invite all in a pleasant manner
towards righteousness, always
remain in pious company.
- Daily perform two rakaats of
salaatul haajah (need). Then
spend at least five minutes in
Dua, begging Allah Ta’ala to
protect you and others from all
the fitna.
In short, the main priority is to
save one’s Imaan and
completely refrain from the
disobedience of Allah Ta`ala. If
this is not possible due to the
environment, do not go there.
Study via correspondence or
seek some other avenue of
Halaal earning. Allah Ta`ala
alone is the Provider. If you
sacrifice for Him, He will
provide from unimaginable
sources.
May Allah Ta’ala guide you and
us towards His pleasure at all
times. Aameen.
TRUE LOVE
Our Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu `Alayhi Wasallam came to mankind with a heavenly message. He
was not driven by worldly ambition, had no treasure from which to spend, no splendid gardens from which
to eat and no castle in which to live. Despite all this, his beloved followers pledged allegiance to him and
remained steadfast, enduring a hard life full of difficulties. Although, they were few, weak, and always in
fear of being uprooted by those surrounding them, yet they loved the Prophet Sallallahu `Alaihe Wasallam
wholly and completely.
They were besieged in a mountain pass, and during that time, they had little or no food. Their reputation
was attacked, their own relatives waged war against them and yet their love for him was perfect.
Some of them were dragged over the hot sands of the desert, some were imprisoned, and others were
subjected to inventive and innovative ways of punishment - all of which the disbelievers inflicted upon
them. Despite enduring all of that, their heart and soul demonstrated unreserved love for him.
They were deprived of home, country, family and wealth. They were driven out from the playing fields of
their childhood and from the motherland. Despite all this suffering, they loved him unequivocally.
Seerah
The believers faced trials because of Prophet Sallallahu Alaih’s message. The very ground under their
feet was shaken violently, and yet their love for him continued to grow.
One of them was appointed with the duty of carrying the Prophet's message to a king in a foreign land,
and despite knowing that it was a mission from which he would not return, Yet he went and fulfilled his
duty for he loved the Prophet Sallallahu `Alaihe Wasallam with unmitigated love.
But why did they love him and why were they so happy and exuberant with his message and content with
his example? Why did they forget the pain, the suffering and the hardship that resulted from following
him?
To put it simply, Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu `Alayhi Wasallam epitomised benevolence and
righteousness. They perceived in him with all the signs of truth and purity. He was a symbol for those who
sought out higher meaning. With his tenderness, he cooled the rancour from the hearts of the people, with
words of truth he soothed their chests and with his message, he filled their souls with peace.
He poured happiness into their hearts until the pain that they endured from being in his company to seem
insignificant. He instilled into their souls a belief that made them forget every injury and every adversity
they had to endure.
He polished their spirits with his guidance and he illuminated their eyes with his brilliance. He removed
from them the burdens of ignorance, the depravities of idolatry. He extinguished the fires of malice and
animosity from their souls and he poured the water of faith into their hearts. Thus, their minds and bodies
became tranquil and their hearts found peace.
They tasted the beauty of life with him and they experienced delight in his company. They found
happiness at his side, safety and salvation in following him and inner-richness and emulating him:
"And we have sent you [O Muhammad] not but as a mercy for all that exists." (Al-Ambiyaa' 21:107)
"And He brings them out of darkness [by Allah's will] unto light..." (Al-Maa'idah 5:16)
"He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the fetters [bindings] that were upon them."
(Al-`Araaf 7:157)
They were truly happy with their leader and they so rightly deserved to be.
O’ Allah, send prayers and peace upon Muhammad, the liberator of minds from the shackles of
deviation, the rescuer of souls from the curses of falsehood, and be pleased with his noble
Companions as a recompense for their striving and their efforts.
ZAKAAT
IMPORTANCE OF ZAKAAT
Zakaat is a monetary devotion and an Ibaadat that
has been ordained in the Shariats of all the prophets.
The laws of Nisaab were different but the giving of
Zakaat in the way of Allah was common to all the
prophets.
Zakaat is one of the five pillars of Islam and has been
mentioned many times alongside Salah in the
Qur'aan. Allah's words commanding ".....and establish
regular Salah, and give regular Zakaat....." are
referred to in many places in the Qur'aan and from
this we can derive that after Salah, Zakaat is most
important. Zakaat is in fact mentioned no fewer than
82 times in the Qur'aan.
Just as Salah is the most important act of worship
which has to be performed bodily, so is Zakaat the
main act of worship which is to be performed
monetarily. Those who fulfil this duty have been
promised abundant reward in this world and in the
Hereafter. Whosoever evades Zakaat has been
sternly warned in the Qur'aan and Hadeeth of the
consequences. Even the mere thought of the severe
warnings should make mindful Muslims tremble with
fear.
DEFINITION OF ZAKAAT
Zakaat literally means to increase. Technically it
means to purify one's possession of wealth by
distributing 2½% of it to the poor as a fundamental
Ibaadat,
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GIVING ZAKAAT?
It is stated in the Ahaadith that by giving Zakaat the
following benefits are gained:
1. The pleasure of Allah;
2. Increase in wealth;
3. Protection from losses;
4. Safety from calamities;
5. Protection from the wrath of Allah and from a bad
death;
6. The Zakaat will provide a shelter on the Day of
Judgement;
7. Security from seventy misfortunes;
8. It will serve as a shield from the fire of Jahannam;
9. It contributes to longevity (a long life);
10. It prevents fear and grief.
WHAT IS THE PUNISHMENT FOR NOT GIVING
ZAKAAT?
Allah says in the Qur'aan, "And there are those who
hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the
way of Allah, announce to them a most grievous
penalty (when) on the Day of Qiyaamah heat will
be produced out of that wealth in the fire of
Jahannam, then with it they will be branded on
their foreheads and their flanks and backs. (It will
be said to them) This is the treasure which you
hoarded for yourselves, taste then the treasure
that you had been hoarding." (9:34-35)
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Salâm has said, "The
person on whom Allah has bestowed wealth, and he
does not give Zakaat, on the Day of Qiyaamah, his
wealth will be turned into a venomous bald serpent
which will wind around his neck and bite his jaws and
say: I am your wealth, I am your treasure." (Bukhari)
IS ZAKAAT A TAX OR AN ACT OF IBAADAT?
Allah says in the Qur'aan, "Take from their wealth
Zakaat so that you may cleanse them and purify
them therewith." (9:103)
This verse points to the fact that Zakaat is not a
governmental tax, but its main purpose is to keep
those who are wealthy clean from sins monetarily.
WHO SHOULD PAY ZAKAAT?
Zakaat is Fardh upon a sane Muslim adult owning
wealth to the value of Nisaab. The wealth should be in
excess of his/her personal needs (clothing, household
furniture, utensils and cars etc. are termed as articles
of personal need). It should also be of a productive
nature from which he/she can derive profit or benefit
such as merchandise for business, gold, silver, cash,
livestock, shares etc.
WHAT IS NISAAB?
The amount of wealth which makes one liable for
Zakaat is called Nisaab. The Nisaab of gold and
silver fixed by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa
Salâm is as follows:
During the time of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wa
Sallam the value of 200 Dirham (silver coins) was
equivalent to that of 20 Dinaars (gold coins). The
weight of these was later converted into Tolas (old
Indian weight) equal to the total weight 0f the 20 gold
and 200silvercoins respectively. But since the time of
the prophet Sallalalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam the rates of
gold and silver have fluctuated so much so that the
price so that the price of silver has drastically fallen
and the price of gold has risen. Hence the drastic
difference between the current figures for the Nisaab
The principal of انفع للفقراء is applied whereby that which
is most beneficial to the recipients of Zakaat is taken
into account. Hence the Nisaab of silver is applied as
the standard Nisaab.
Therefore if the total value of your excess wealth
is £186.39 or more then you are liable to pay
WHAT IS THE RATE OF ZAKAAT?
The rate of Zakaat is 2½% (1 /40th) of the total value
of your excess wealth, i.e. £2.50 from every £100.
ON WHAT IS ZAKAAT FARDH?
Zakaat must be paid on the following items:
1. Gold and silver, be it in the form of bullion,
jewellery, utensils, cash on hand, money in
bank/building society or shares (at current market
2. Fixtures & fittings of a shop, vehicles used in
JUST FOR WOMEN
DESIGNER
EYEBROWS
In a world which has been illuminated by the light of technology, we find our everyday en-vironment
speeding up in the race to keep up with the times. But amidst this cloak of mod-ernism, can be found
the ancient traits of the age of Jaahiliyyah (ignorance) that have been cleverly disguised into society.
The essence of which affects all, especially our sisters in the Islamic world.
Allah, the All-knowing, has given the Muslim nation a guide to which they can refer to and has also
provided a commentary (Tafseer) to this guide. The guidebook is the Qur'aan and the commentary to
this is the Ahaadith of the final Messenger Muhammad (S.A.W).
Allah has mentioned in the Glorious Qur'aan: ("Shaytaan had said)... And indeed I will order them
to change the nature created by Allah. (Allah says) And whoever takes Shaytaan as a
Protector (or helper) instead of Allah, has surely suffered, an open loss." (4:119)
Women of the modern age are accustomed to wearing make-up and other cosmetics. Beauti-fying
themselves with methods that change the very nature of their creation has become the norm of the
day even for Muslim females. The above verse states that those people who change the Creation of
Allah are, as it were, helping Shaytaan to fulfill what he had promised Allah of his evil intentions. It is
them who are taking Shaytaan a protector other than Allah.
14
Muslim sisters are in the strange habit of shaping out their eyebrows. This is done by
vari-ous means, such as shaving, trimming or even plucking. Other means are also used
which result in the removal of eyebrows until a thin 'designer' line above the eye remains.
This habit of designing the eyebrows is totally forbidden in Islam. The aforementioned verse
re-fers to this fact that we are not to change the nature of Allah's Creation.
In a Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood (R.A) the Prophet (S.A.W) has stated: "Allah
has cursed the ladies who tattoo others and those who have themselves tattooed and the women
who remove the eyebrows and the women who have the eyebrows removed. And the women who
artificially partition between their teeth for the sake of beautification are the ones who change the
Creation of Allah." (Muslim)
Imaam Nawawi Rahmatullahi alayh has written in his commentary of 'Muslim' that to
re-move the hair of the face is haraam except for a lady wising to remove facial hair besides
her eyebrows, for that is permissible. 'Fataawa Raheemiyyah' states that it is Mustahab
(desirable) for a lady to remove the facial hair other than those of the eyebrows.
This Hadith refers to the Arabian women at the time of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) who used to trim
their eyebrows in order to look more attractive. The ladies of those times also used to HAVE a small
gap artificially placed between their two front teeth, which was also regarded as an attractive feature
for a lady at the time. The Prophet (S.A.W) saw this habit in the women of Arabia and forbade the
Muslim ladies from doing the same. He mentioned that such practices invited the Anger and Wrath of
Allah. Our Muslim sisters too should take heed from such advices and warnings. But alas, it is all too
sad to see this evil habit prevailing even in the Muslim societies today. From University students to
housewives and mothers, we see numerous Muslim females spending vast amounts of time and
money in making themselves up to look more beautiful. However if the woman wishes to beautify
herself (remaining within the boundaries) for the sake of her husband (and totally conceals herself
from non-mahram males) then it would be permissible, or rather desirable.
It is also worth mentioning that for a lady to cut or remove the hair of the head is also haraam.
And that for men to remove or trim, their beards or eyebrows is haraam as well. The only
time when it is permissible for a lady to remove the hair of her head is in Hajj or Umrah, the
limit of which has been prescribed as well. May Allah give us all the ability to abstain from such
evil habits and follow the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (S.A.W). Aameen. (Courtesy Riyadul Jannah)
Menstruation during Ramadhaan
Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh)
1. During menses, it is not permissible to offer salaat or
to fast. The only difference is that she is completely
excused from salaat. After the menses, it is not wajib on
her to make qada of her salaat. However, she is not
excused from fasting. After her menses she will have to
keep her missed fasts.
2. If a woman stopped bleeding in Ramadaan during the
day, it will not be proper for her to eat or drink for the
rest of the day. It will be wajib on her to behave like all
other fasting persons until sunset. However, this day will
not be counted as a fast. She will have to make qada of it.
3. If a woman stopped bleeding in Ramadaan at night and
if such a little time of the night is left that she cannot
even say Allahu Akbar once, it will still be wajib on her to
keep fast the next day.
4. If a woman had menses for less than ten days, then if
she has so much time of the night whereby she could
have a quick bath but after bathing she does not have the
time to say even one Allahu Akbar; even then she will
have to keep fast the next day. If she had the time, but
did not have a bath, she should not break her fast.
Instead, she should make her intention (for fasting) and
have a bath in the morning. If she has even less time than
this, that is she does not have the time to have a bath,
then it will not be permissible for her to fast the next day.
However, it will not be proper for her to eat or drink
anything. She will have to spend the entire day like all
other fasting persons and even make qada of that fast.
Her name is Yûkhând. When the priests had informed Pharaoh that a boy will be born from among the
Banû Isrâ'îl and will fight against his kingdom, Pharaoh issued an order whereby he instructed that all
boys who are born to the tribe of Banû Isrâ'îl should be killed. Thousands of such boys were killed. Mûsâ
‘Alayhis Salâm was born in this volatile situation. Allah informed his mother by way of inspiration that she
should continue breast-feeding him and that when she fears over his life, she should place him in a box
and set him afloat in the river. And when We decide, We will send him back to you. Eventually, this is
what she did and Allah also fulfilled all His promises.
blessings of this trust manifested themselves.
Natural Toothbrush
We call it Miswaak
Many ancient and alternative medicinal techniques
are based on the belief that health begins in the
mouth. In fact, in TCM, doctors start their diagnosis
by looking at the tongue. However, until recently in
Western civilizations we have not been as in tune
with our teeth and tongue as we should have.....
The Natural Toothbrush
The Natural Toothbrush can remedy the situation.
There has been much press recently as to how we
should change our toothbrush at least once a
month to escape all the germs that form on the
bristles. With the Natural Toothbrush you are
changing it literally every day!
The Natural Toothbrush is taken from the root of
the Araak (Salvadora Persica) tree which is very
widespread in Middle Eastern countries. It is similar
to the pomegranate tree and its twigs are big,
thorny, tangled and twisted in such a way that they
stretch very far. The Natural Toothbrush is made
from the root of the tree and in the root are all kinds
of natural nutrients: a great quantity of fluorine and
silicon, vitamin C, sulphur, salvadorine,
trimethylamine and several minerals like potassium,
sodium, chloride, sodium bicarbonate and calcium
oxides (all of which greatly whiten and strengthen
tooth enamel).
Best news of all about the Natural Toothbrush is it
is inexpensive! which lasts at least 4 - 6 weeks,
you'll save a fortune in toothpaste!
Easy to use...
The Natural Toothbrush is so much more than a
traditional toothbrush. It's twig-like form means that
the 'brush' massages the teeth and gums. After use
each day, just peel back another layer at the point
(removing any germs that came from the mouth)
and start again. Recent scientific research (and use
of the Natural Toothbrush over the past millennia)
shows that the Natural Toothbrush , can be
considered as the best tool to promote good oral
hygiene. It prevents the formation of cavities and
plaque and makes teeth whiter and enamel
stronger. If used regularly it can even
remove smoking stains, tea and coffee
stains and stains formed by the pollutants in a
bad diet.
What do we know about Ramadhaan?
Ramadhaan is the ninth month of the Islamic
Calendar. The Islamic calendar, like the solar
calendar has twelve months. The Islamic calendar
is based on the moon (Lunar), while the solar
calendar is based on the sun (Solar.)
The solar calendar months are made of 30 or 31
days except for February. The Lunar calendar
months are made of 29 or 30 days. Ramadhaan is
sometimes 29 days and sometimes 30 days.
Ramadhaan is a very important months for the
Muslims. Its name is mentioned in the Qur’an in
Surah 2, verse 185.
Ramadhaan is the month of fasting during which
the Muslims (Submitters) do their fasting as
ordered by God in the Qur’an.
Ramadhaan is also the month during which the
Qur’an was given (revealed) to the prophet
Muhammad (S.A.W).
a hungry needy person feels when he or she does
not have any food to eat.
The believers can understand the importance of
giving to charity and helping the hungry and needy
people
Fasting is also a healthy practice because it gives
the body a chance to rest and get rid of some
unwanted weight or materials in our body system.
Fasting means to stop eating and drinking during
the time of the fast. Fasting begins at Dawn and
ends at sunset.”
What are the benefits of Fasting?
Fasting has many benefits to the believers. Like
all the religious practices in Islam, fasting will
make the believer stronger as a believer, closer
to Allah, more blessed and happier to be with
Allah and to obey Him.
Fasting teaches the believer self control
because the fasting Muslim controls his
