School Update
Alhamdulillah, Kirklees cabinet have approved the
establishment of two single sex schools on the Batley Field
Hill site, but this is not the end. There are four issues that are
still causing concerns for the Muslims.

Separate School
——– For ———
Boys & Girls
Soothill community will have to send their children to
Earlsheaton, this will be their new catchment area.
The Head teachers of the schools still refuse to hear
the voice of the majority of the parents.
The sixth form provision has not yet finalised.
The details still need to be worked out.
1) Soothill
Soothill have always traditionally been with the rest of Batley
and have nothing in common with the Earlsheaton area.
Soothill Masjid and supplementary school is allied to IMWS
and has an affinity to this area. When they want to go
shopping they go to Batley Town. When they want to travel
they either use Batley Bus station or Batley Train Station. If
they become ill they travel to the Batley Health Centre. They
would not travel to Earlsheaton area, cross two dual carriage
ways and increase their carbon footprint. Parents Alliance is
in contact with the Soothill Parents. Indeed, they have
become part of the Batley Parents Alliance. They also
presented a petition at the cabinet meeting. Discussions are
still in progress. It is time for Parents from Soothill area to
wake up and become active. It‟s still not too late as we have
discussed. We need to contact our local councillors, Write to
them and other councillors.
2) Head Teachers
Based on what the School Head was saying at the cabinet
meeting, it seems he is still not happy. The council have
made it clear that the sensitivity of the local community will be
given due regards. We need to draw a line under every thing
and the Head needs to work with us to make this new
direction into a successful reality. If the heads cannot support
this then they should consider their positions. The Muslim
community do not want mixed classes. This was said by over
8000 signatures.
The community is not looking for trouble or a stand off with
the Head Teachers. All we want is they take forward the
parents wishes. The community have not come this far in their
struggles to be ignored now. Any attempt by the schools to
deviate from parent‟s choice will be met by fierce but peaceful
resistance.
one will not disobey one‟s lord anymore. Perform 2
Rak‟a Salat us Safr. It is advisable to recite Surah
Kafiroon in the first and Surah Ikhlas in the second
Rak‟a. Then humbly make dua to Allah:
“O Allah, make this journey easy for me, and shorten
its distance for us. Only you are our true companion on
this journey and the true protector of our home. I seek
your refuge from all hardships and the viewing of evil
sights and from all kinds of evil regarding my wealth
and relatives.
Dua whilst leaving one‟s home
Leave one‟s home, stepping out with one‟s right foot
and recite the following dua;
“With the name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah
and without the strength of Allah there is no power to
do good and no power to save one from evil.”
2
Leave anger and the luxuries of relaxation and eating
at home. Bring with you patience, determination and
generosity.
Polite talk is sweeter than a lump of sugar. Keep one‟s
lips moist with the remembrance of Allah. Stay in the
state of wudhu at all times. Constantly recite the
Tamjeed whilst in Makkah Mukarramah and Durood
Shareef whilst in Madinah Munawarrah. Take extra
care to follow the Sunnah throughout one‟s journey.
When one‟s companions needs are fulfilled then busy
oneself with dua, zikr, Tilawah, Salah, Durood Shareef,
istigfaar and Tawaaf. Be mindful of one‟s own health.
Do not needlessly pursue the issues of others.
“Anger overcomes you whilst patience and good
manners overcome others”
Serving the needs of the Hujjaj should be assumed to
be a source of reward and a means of salvation- never
believe it to be useless. Save oneself from pride.
During hardship beg and weep to Allah. Recite Surah
Alam Nashrah and Surah Li‟ eelafi Quraish.
Keep in one‟s mind that my Allah is watching me,
meditate upon this fact often. Do not waste one‟s
precious time. Do not roam the markets or waste one‟s
time in making countless phone calls and texting
others.
Do not criticize the inhabitants of the holy cities and
respect everything there. Observe patience during
hardship especially in the heat, stay content and do
not complain. Gaze upon the Kabah and Green dome
with humility, respect and love. Travel to Madinah with
the intention of visiting the Prophet (SAW) grave and
the Masjid. Do not doubt one‟s forgiveness in the plain
of Arafah. Believe whole heartedly that Allah has
forgiven you.
Leaving one‟s house for the house of Allah
First perform 2 Rak‟a Salatut-taubah and beg to be
Those leaving should say to those bidding farewell;
“I entrust you to Allah whom by which any trust is
never wasted or lost.”
When comfortably in one‟s vehicle of transport
I begin with the name of Allah, all praise is due to
Allah, pure is the one who has subjugated this for us;
we were not able to have control over it. And of course
to our lord we have to return.
In the plane
The motion and halting of the vessel with the name of
Allah. My lord is ever forgiving, merciful.
Meeqat
Meeqat is the name of the boundary where a person
puts on the ihram before entering Makkah
Mukarramah. Hajis are generally informed on the
plane before the crossing of the Meeqat Those
traveling by plane should wear the ihram from their
respective airports. It is impermissible to enter the
boundary of the Haram without the ihram.
Ihram
The ihram for a man consists of 2 sheets, a lower
garment and an upper garment. Wearing sewn/
stitched clothing is not permissible.
In regards to women, the hair must be covered in such
a way that the face and forehead are clearly visible.
The face must not be covered; however purdah
(concealing one self from non mahram men) is also
necessary. Purchasing a purposely built cap provides
a solution for both veiling one self and keeping the
face open.
When removing one‟s clothes at the time of wearing
the ihram, one should visualize separating oneself
from all things unrelated to Allah.
Ghusl should be made if possible, otherwise wudhu
will suffice, during which one should visualize and
make intention of cleansing one‟s outer as well as
one‟s inner „dirt‟.
VIRTUES IN GREETING A HAJI
The following is taken from the English translation of Fadhail-e-Haj by Shaykh Zakariyya Kandehlawi (R.A):
Ibn Umar (R.A) reports that Rasulullah (S.A.W) said, "When you meet a haji (on his way home) then greet
him, shake hands with him and ask him to beg forgiveness of Allah on your behalf before he enters his
home, for his prayer for forgiveness is accepted since he is forgiven by Allah for his sins."
In another Hadeeth it is mentioned that Rasulullah (S.A.W) once prayed, "Oh Allah, forgive the sins of the
Hajis and forgive the sins of him for whom the haji prays."
It is reported that Rasulullah (S.A.W) made this dua three times which emphasises its importance.
It is also reported that Umar (R.A) said, "The haji has the pardon of Allah and until the twentieth of Rabi al
Awwal Allah answers his prayers in which he begs forgiveness for anyone."
For these reasons it has always been the custom and habit of the learned predecessors to welcome the
pilgrims, to walk with them and to ask them to pray on ones behalf.
Halloween
An Evil Celebration
4
On 31 st October, millions of people will celebrate a very old festival. Many people from
respectable Muslim families say that Halloween is just an excuse for our children to have a
good time. A time for games, fun and fortune telling, for ghost stories and making
mischief.
For centuries people believed that Halloween was a night when witches walked or flew!
Halloween fires mean far more than ordinary bonfires. It spelt magic.
Islam recognizes a reality to some manifestations of magic. Allah in the Holy Qur‟aan
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102) explains that the Jews chose to follow magical formulas taught
to them by devils. The meaning of the following verse is a clear indication that the one
who follows, learns and teaches at are Kaafirs (disbelievers), “They follow what the
Shayaateen (devils) related concerning Sulayman‟s kingdom, But it was not Sulayman
who disbelieved, it was the devils who disbelieved by teaching the people magic…” These
devils already committed disbelief just by teaching it.
The two angels by the names Haaroot and Maaroot were sent as a test to the people of
Babylon. Allah further says, “…Although the two would not teach anyone anything until
after they warned them saying: „Verily we are only a test and a trial, so do not commit
disbelief‟.” In this verse Allah referred to magic as being Kufr (disbelief).
The Sharee‟ah (law) has set aside a very severe punishment for anyone practising it, who
does not repent and give it up is death. This law is based on the following Hadeeth
reported by Jundub Ibn Ka‟b. The Prophet (saw) said, “The prescribed punishment for the
magician is that he be executed by the sword.” (Tirmidhi)
We are risking our own salvation by emulating the behaviour of the Kuffaar in allowing our
children to disguise themselves wearing the Halloween masks, singing and knocking at
doors, playing pranks on people „Trick or treat‟, making it a „Mischief Night‟ not realising
that Allah says in the Holy Qur‟aan “Oh people follow what has been sent to you from your
lord and do not follow other patrons beside him…” (7:3).
Also take head of the following verse of the Qur‟an, “Leave those who take their religion to
be more play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of this world…” (6:70).
I conclude with a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Sa‟eed Al-Khudri, who said, “I heard the
Messenger (saw) say, Whoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hands;
and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with
his heart – and that is the weakest of faith.” (Muslim, Bukhari, Ibn Maajah, Musnad-e-
Ahmad)
The removal of this evil celebration is an important issue for the salvation and prosperity
of the Muslim community.
BONFIRE
NIGHT
WHAT IS BONFIRE NIGHT?
Guy Fawkes (1570- 1606) - English conspirator in the gunpowder plot to blow up King James I and the
members of both houses of parliament. Fawkes, a Roman Catholic convert, was arrested in the cellar
underneath the house on 4th November 1606 and later tortured and executed. The event is still commemorated
in Britain and elsewhere every 5th November with bonfires, fireworks and the burning of the „GUY‟; an effigy.
THE ISLAMIC VIEWPOINT
The Prophet (saw) has stated in one Hadeeth, “Whosoever imitates a nation is one of them.” (Abu Daawood)
The commentators of Ahadeeth have stated that the meaning of „he is one of them‟ is whatever reward or
punishment that nation is going to receive in the Hereafter (on that particular action) then the person who
imitates them will also receive the same reward or punishment. For example, if one adopts the lifestyle of the
pious then (in the Hereafter) he will be given the same reward as these pious people. Likewise, if one adopts
the lifestyle of those whom the Qur‟an and Ahadeeth have condemned, then he will receive the same
punishment that those condemned people will receive. From the above Hadeeth we can clearly see that
imitating those acts of a nation which are punishable in the Hereafter, are totally Haraam. The same is the case
with bonfire night. Whosoever participates in it, in whatever way, is eligible and worthy of punishment, as all non
-Islamic festivals have been proclaimed Haraam by our Prophet (saw). The Prophet (saw) has stated,
“Whosoever increases the crowd of a nation is one of them.” (Musnad Abu Ya‟laa)
This Hadeeth clearly expresses the prohibition of participating in non-islamic festivals. The same commentary
mentioned above will also apply here.
Maulana Yousuf Ludhyanwi, in his book „Your Questions & Answers‟ (Urdu version) states, “To participate in
non-islamic festival is Haraam and totally prohibited.” He has narrated the above Hadeeth as reference.
Allah states in the Qur‟aan “Spend not wastefully your wealth. Verily squanderers are the brothers of Satan.” In
this verse „spending wastefully‟ means to spend ones wealth in those courses that are in contradiction to the
obedience of Allah. (Tafseer Jalaalayn)
Those people who say that we do not participate in bonfire night, but on the other hand buy fireworks, sparklers
etc. to enjoy themselves should think twice before they spend their money on these things, as Allah has
proclaimed them the brothers of Shaytaan, i.e. they are the imitators of the devils, (Jalaalayn footnote 12), and
the consequences of imitating has already been mentioned above.
Celebrating bonfire night has hardly ever benefited the loyal British public. Besides sooty faces and smoky black
clothes, the participators receive no gain. If there is any financial gain then it is for those companies (usually
foreign controlled) who manufacture fireworks etc. They line up their pockets with money taken from the featherheaded
people.
Fiddling around with fireworks creates many accidents, many of which lead to fatal injuries. Many youths go
around begging „penny for a guy‟, and if gains are high enough, this easy money leads them to think of new
enterprises of easy money, which lead straight to crime.
One must not forget bonfire night contributes to the „Greenhouse Effect‟, a major world issue and on top of the
United Nations‟ environment program. Fossil fuel consumption and forest fires are the main causes of carbon
dioxide build up, thus preventing the trapping of solar radiation which leads to an increase in average world
temperatures with a consequent rise in see level.
Before celebrating and participating in bonfire night one should logically think what am I gaining, especially
Muslims, who are always the target to Non-Islamic festivals, customs etc. There is no worldly gain whatsoever
and in the Hereafter one will have to give account of one‟s actions, and each and every one of us will be
compensated accordingly.
Even Muslims as young as seven and eight waste their pocket money on fireworks. These children are
influenced by the elders of the family. Instead, we should try an stop them and not allow them to buy fireworks.
My dear brothers and sisters, we do not gain anything from fireworks but sin. It is Shaytaan pushing us to buy
fireworks.
May Allah safeguard us from participating in all Non-Islamic festivals. Ameen.
Islam & Family
PART 5
Continued from last issue
Amongst the requirements of a good upbringing of our children, there also exists the need to keep an eye on
their habits and character. With regards to this aspect, it is absolutely essential that we save ourselves from
neglect. One of the reasons is that the only habits which are created will be the habits which are presented
and allowed to set in at childhood. It is very rare that the habits which developed as a result of their upbringing
will change when they become older. The qualities which are instilled into the child during his/her childhood
become firm in their personalities. If children are not saved from bad habits then it becomes very difficult to
stop them later in life. Habit is a thing which starts off as a Spider‟s web, but later, turns into a strong iron wire.
The Learned men have stated that it is compulsory for the parents to look after their children and prevent them
from going to places of amusements or needless sports. The child should be safeguarded from excessive
eating, excessive talking, excessive sleeping, and unnecessary meetings, as there is nothing but harm to be
gained from these things, and besides, excessiveness deprives the human from the goodness of this world
and the Hereafter. Listening to, or watching undesirable things, is extremely fatal for the child. When these
types of things are already being fed into an immature and still developing mind, then the child will begin to
develop a likeness for these particular things. This is why it is very important for the parents to oversee the
dealings, with regards to their children‟s moral education, so that they can be saved from dire gatherings,
undesired things, undesired listening, talking and seeing etc.
Turn your family, especially your children, punctual and habitual of undertaking various acts of worship; make
them accustomed to knowledge and skill. Make provision of good Islamic books and Magazines in the home
with the advice of a good Scholar; teach the family members Supplications and Azkaar for different occasions,
and then remind them of these supplications on those particular occasions whilst also mentioning the virtues
and benefits associated with them. For example, inform them that Rasulullah Sallallaahu „Alaihi wa Sallam
has informed to the nearest meaning; when the name of Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta‟aala is mentioned at the
time of entering the home and at the time of eating, shaytaan says to his companions, “There is no place for
you to sleep here, nor is there any provision of food.” (Muslim Shareef)
From childhood, the children should be taught to make a habit of eating and drinking whilst being seated, and
similarly they should be taught to eat with their right hand. They should also be taught to use their right hand
for taking or giving things from and to others. There are many people who reach a considerable age,
however, they will still drink water whilst standing and holding the vessel with their left hand, this is a most
undesirable act. If children are not prevented from using the wrong methods and if they are not taught to
develop the habit of undertaking good tasks, then they will retain the undesired habits and methods even
though they will grow to be of a considerable age.
Hence, these are just a few starting points of manners and morality within the Muslim household, which have
been mentioned. We can just deduct from these the amount of responsibilities which we have upon us for the
remainder of their lives. How can we nurture our children to become good and pious? These are
responsibilities which we have for the rest of our lives. We will have to endure it throughout life. We should
get the child to associate with a pious person, and should ourselves stay associated also so that we can seek
guidance as we go along. There is a lot of ease and simplicity when guidance is sought. Every person‟s
circumstance is different, their environment is different, therefore with regard to this matter, by seeking good
Islamic guidance we can ensure the provision of an Islamic environment within the home.
May Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta‟aala grant us the guidance to act upon what we have learnt. Aameen.
Science Of Tasawwuf
Continued from last issue
Explanation of Hazrat Maulana Rashid
Ahmed Gangohi Rahmatullahi Alai
The knowledge of the Sufis refers to a combination of
the knowledge of Deen (both Zahir and Batin) and the
power of Yaqeen (firm faith). This is the highest
knowledge. The state of the Sufiya is adornment of
character and the perpetual cognition of Allah. The
Haqeeqat of Tasawwuf is to become adorned with the
Akhlaq of Allah Ta‟ala, to annihilate one‟s Iradah (will)
and cultivate the Ridha of Allah. The character of the
Sufiya is identical to the character of Rasulullah
Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam, which is, in accordance
with the declaration of Almighty Allah: “Verily, you (O
Muhammad) are established on a great character.”
Also, whatever is mentioned in the Hadeeth is part of
the Akhlaq of the Sufis.
The description of their Akhlaq is as follows:
1. To regard oneself as the most inferior. This is the
opposite of Takabbur.
2. To deal kindly with the creation and to bear
patiently the difficulties others cause.
3. To have tenderness, good character and to refrain
from wrath and anger.
4. To sympathise with others and give them
preferential treatment. Also to give priority to the
Huqooq (rights) of others over and above one‟s
desires.
5. To be generous.
6. To overlook faults and to forgive.
7. To be cheerful and upright.
8. To adopt the path of easiness and to be lenient.
9. To shun pretence and formality.
10. To spend without being miserly. But, not in such a
free manner whereby one himself becomes afflicted
with need.
11. To have trust in Allah.
12. To be content.
13. To be fearful of Allah and to abstain from all kinds
of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden.
14. To refrain from quarrelling, fighting and wrath but
for the truth.
15. To abstain from malice, jealousy and hatred.
16. To abstain from the desire of honour and fame.
17. To fulfil promises.
18. To persevere.
19. To be in agreement with those brothers who have
a foresight and vision.
20. To have love and unity for brothers and be aloft
from strangers. (Strangers in this context refers to
those who are lost in worldly pursuits and have no
relationship with Tasawwuf.)
21. To be grateful to the benefactor.
22. To sacrifice personal fame for the sake of
Muslims.
A Sufi adorns his Zahir and Batin with Akhlaq.
Tasawwuf is, in fact, nothing but Adab (respect).
Respect for the Divine Court is to divert the attention
from everything besides Allah because of His shame,
splendour and dignity. The worst of sins is the
conversation of the Nafs, i.e. pursuit of ones desires,
which is the cause of spiritual darkness.
If the Head teacher and the Governors cannot
understand the wishes of over 8000 parents who
have signed the petition then they know what they
must do. The community is not for turning.
3) Sixth form provision
Howden Clough Girls School already has a sixth
form provision. We do not want to lose this. If this
provision is lost it will be nearly impossible to have it
reinstated. The education of our girls will suffer.
Conservative parents will not want to send their
daughters to a mixed sixth form. This will strongly
discriminate against our girls. The community is not
asking for anything new. All it is asking for is the
continuation of a provision that is already there.
4) The detail
The real work starts now. The parents of Batley
community want to be actively involved through the
Batley Parents Alliance in designing this unique one
in a lifetime provision. It has great potential. It is
only by involving the Alliance will this new project be
successful and its full potential realised.
Finally. the Parents Alliance sincerely welcomes the
councils decision to have two single sex schools o
the Batley Field Hill site. We can understand how
the Heads, Chair of Governors and possible some of
the teachers may feel about this decision. This is the
wishes of the parents. Please don‟t go against them.
If you cannot support the council and the parents
then we can understand. You have the right to
disagree. But don‟t actively plot or go against us.
Islam teaches the upmost respect be shown to
teachers and we would wish to maintain that
respect.
as long as there is no fear of Fitnah (evil). If there exists
a fear of fitnah, it will not be permissible to do so.
The rulings of the Hanafi Fuqahaa regarding Niqab
being obligatory are many. We will suffice on
mentioning one such ruling. It is stated in Majma‟ Al-
Anhur that “in our times, it is not wajib, rather Fardh
(compulsory) for (young) women to conceal their faces
because of the many evils” (vol 1, pg 81, Dar Ihya Al-
Q. If someone has done this bad evil sin in the past
and now have made a sincere Tawbah and
resolution not to do the same act again will they be
forgiven by Allah Ta‟ala.
A. If sincere Tawbah is made then Insha Allah the sin
will be forgiven as long as you are not withholding a
right of an individual.
Q. Are men allowed to wear anything with the
colour red and pink, the whole garment or only a
few bits of that colour?
A. It is makrooh (not preferable) for men to wear a
garment that is fully red or the colour of which
resembles the females. Partially red or red lines are
permitted.
Q. Are men able to wear bracelets, necklaces &
chains as jewellery made of plated gold and silver?
A. It is prohibited for men to wear such jewellery.
Q. Can man and women bathe together naked in the
shower or bathtub together?
A. Modesty dictates that at least the private parts be
covered.
Q. Can both wife and Husband have sexual
relationship together completely naked under a
sheet or cover in bed?
A. If they are covered by a sheet then that will be fine
total nudity would be against ones modesty.
Q Can men wear only shorts or underwear in
daytime in the lounge, kitchen or outside in garden
in the company of the wife and small children under
the age of puberty?
A. Ones satar, parts of the body that need covering
should be covered in front of children also.
Q. Is it compulsory to wear a Hijab?
Q: I have an addiction of watching adult movies and
every time I watch it and afterwards I say I will not
do it again, but I do, what can I do to over come
this, please help?
A. You have to really make a conscious decision as to
whether you want to give up this addiction and why.
With any addiction, the person who is involved has to
make a conscious decision to give it up. You are
actively engaging in viewing porn. You have to make a
definite, conscious and full effort to give it up. Allah
Ta'ala does not misguide you. It is shaytaan who
misguides you and you give in to him. So decide, who
do you please? Allah Ta'ala or shaytaan? Allow me to
make some practical suggestions. Stop watching T.V.
completely, avoid watching news, sports, the works! Do
not read magazines and newspapers with nude or semi
-nude pics. Walk with your gaze lowered all the time. It
is not impossible. You will find it will become second
nature to you. You will find that what you do decide to
look at, will be most pleasing rather than running amok
with your heart, eyes and Imaan. Think of it this way.
Would you like non-mahram men to stare at and desire
your sister or mother? You most certainly won't. So you
stop this habit and Insha'Allah, shaytaan will have
difficulty in sending your desires into a spin. Secondly,
keep yourself in a state of wudhu all the time. That is,
as soon as your wudhu is broken, go and perform it at
the earliest convenience. Perform wudhu before you go
to bed, make lots of istigfaar, and make sure you fall off
to sleep with Allah Ta'ala's name on your lips and in
your heart. Perform your Salaah 5 times a day on time;
make lots of istigfaar, all day if possible. Make lots of
zikr and constantly ask Allah Ta'ala to guide you away
from your habit. Increase your knowledge of the Quran
and Hadeeth. Join a group through the Masjid which is
involved in teaching/learning the Tafsir of the Quran,
Arabic and Hadeeth. Change your company if you find
that your friends are into porn, movies and girls. You
basically have to change your orientation. Figure out
what is most important to you as a Muslim. Your nafs
and what pleases shaytaan? Try to develop an Islamic
lifestyle and move towards gaining the pleasure of Allah
Ta'ala and displeasing shaytaan. This is a test in your
youth. Rise up to the occasion by drawing yourself to all
that is good in you as a person. Seek knowledge of
Islam, practice it and teach it to others too Insha'Allah.
Learn about the Sahaba and how they lived. How they
gave up their deviant lifestyle before the message was
brought to them by our believed Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi
Wasallam). Learn how easy it was for them to give up
evil and immediately accept truth and Allah Ta'ala's
A. It is obligatory on women to wear Niqab (conceal
their faces) when leaving their homes (for a valid
Shar‟ee need) or in the presence of strange men.
However, it will be permissible for women to reveal their commandments. They developed taqwa and
was against Allah Ta'ala's commandments and they
adopted the Sunnah. By viewing porn, you are
committing zinc of the heart, eyes, limbs and ears. All
these organs will give evidence against you on the
day of Qiyaamah. I suggest that you approach your
local imam or an Alim for help on this matter. Ask him
to explain to you how this is eroding your Imaan. It is
totally up to you to make the correct choices for Allah
Ta'ala's pleasure. Make a determined and concerted
effort to learn about deen and how you are to live
your life as a pious Muslim. What makes you turn to
porn? What will turn you away from porn? What does
porn do to your heart? What does it do to your
Imaan? How does it add to your life and how much
does it take away from your life? The fact that you
have written in indicates that it is becoming a problem
for you. I get the impression that you want to give it
up. Avoid talking to non-mahram women. If you have
to talk to them let it be business like, firm, to the point
and no small talk nor lurid speech. If you are working
with women, avoid unnecessary contact with them.
Avoid being alone with them. Do not concern yourself
with comments or remarks that may be made about
your aloofness. Know that you are gaining the
pleasure of Allah Ta'ala and that should be
uppermost in your mind. That every action of yours is
done only for His pleasure. Get married as soon as
possible. Seek a suitable pious partner and channel
your sexual needs in an acceptable way where you
will actually earn rewards from Allah Ta'ala. Sex with
your wife is an act of worship. So safe yourself, your
heart, eyes, ears and limbs for that wife with whom
you will be able to please yourself and Allah Ta'ala.
Try to increase taleem in your home and slowly ask
your whole family to put the above suggestions into
practice. May Allah Ta'ala guide you away from
shaytaan and fully guide you onto the 'seeratul
mustaqeem. Ameen. (Mufti Ebrahim Desai)
Q. My wife passed away 1 year ago and my family
members are asking me to marry her younger
sister is this acceptable in Islam as I don‟t want to
do anything wrong?
A. You may marry her it is prohibited to marry two
sisters and have in ones marriage at the same time
not one after another.
Have you missed some of the precious time of
Ramadan? Do you feel you could have done more
in that blessed month? Are you disappointed?
Well, you have another chance!
It is out of Allah's mercy that He bestows upon us
blessed times in which rewards are multiplied.
These seasons of goodness recur time after time, so
that we can recharge our spiritual batteries and keep
our hearts alive. Nowadays, we are witnessing one
of them — the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah.
Now that these days have already started, it is time
for deeds, not words. The intelligent person is one
who takes full advantage of every minute and every
second, and this is not so difficult. There are many
ways to achieve goodness, and with little effort you
can get much reward.
recitation of the Qur'an. Who knows, this may be
your last journey to the Sacred House.
Reward of Hajj in Your Homeland
You may be unable to do Hajj this year, and you
may feel sad because you are deprived of the great
reward of Hajj. But you can also achieve this reward
at home. Just reflect on the following Hadeeth:
Whoever prays Fajr Prayer in congregation, and
then sits and remembers Allah until the sun rises,
then (after a while) prays two rak`ahs, he will gain a
reward equal to that of making perfect Hajj and
`Umrah. [The Prophet repeated the word "perfect"
thrice.] (At-Tirmidhi)
It's so easy, isn't it?
Back to the Qur'an
It is time also to dust off your copy of the Qur'an and
return to its refuge. Make these 10 days the
beginning of a systematic and strong relationship
with it. It's important to know that reading one letter
of the Qur'an earns you 10 rewards. In this way,
reading Surat Al-Fatihah — which doesn't take more
than two minutes — will give you more than one
thousand rewards. This is on ordinary days, so what
about these great days! Certainly the reward will be
far greater.
Furthermore, there are some surahs that have
special merits. Reading Surat Al-Ikhlas (surah 112),
for example, is equal to reading one third of the
Qur'an (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). Regular recitation
of Surat Al-Mulk (surah 67) intercedes for its reader
(Abu Dawud), and reading Ayat Al-Kursi (Al-
Baqarah 2:255) when going to sleep protects you
Hajj: The Fifth Pillar of Islam
The first and foremost act of worship in these days
is Hajj. If you are going to observe it this year, then
try your best to gain as much reward as possible.
This is your real chance to become wholly absolved
of your sins and have your record wiped clean. So
spare no effort in perfecting your rituals, and keep
away from anything that may blemish your Hajj.
During the journey, make use of your time through
from Satan for the whole night (Al-Bukhari).
Fasting: Evoking the Spirit of Ramadan
It is a good idea to evoke the spirituality of Ramadan
by fasting during these blessed days. Remember that
observing the voluntary fast for day keeps you away
from Hell. In a Hadeeth, the Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him) said,
Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah's pleasure,
Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a
distance covered by a journey of) seventy years. (Al-
Bukhari and Muslim)
This is during ordinary days. Of course there is even
more reward during these blessed days.
Day of `Arafah
On the day of `Arafah, Allah showers His mercy on the
pilgrims and forgives all their sins. If you are not a
pilgrim, you still can have a share of this forgiveness.
All you have to do is to fast on the Day of `Arafah, and
by doing that, Allah will forgive your sins for two whole
years — the past year and the coming one.
Night Vigil Prayer
You always hear about the virtues of spending night in
prayer, and you have actually tasted its sweetness in
Ramadan nights. Why not revive this beautiful act of
worship during these nights. You can add two or four
extra rak`ahs after finishing `Isha' Prayer and before
Witr Prayer.
In addition to that, there is another easy way to gain
the reward of the night vigil prayer. It is reported that
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
He who attends `Isha' Prayer in congregation is as if
he has performed Salah for half of the night; and he
who attends `Isha' and Fajr prayers in congregation, is
as if he has performed Salah for the whole night. (At-
Tirmidhi)
The Golden Words
This is one of the easiest ways to gain treasures of
reward. You can make dhikr wherever you are, at all
times. You can make dhikr at your home, school, or
workplace, and you can make it while you are driving,
walking, travelling, and commuting. In addition, the
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us
guidance for reciting certain formulas of dhikr that have
special reward. For example, Abu Hurairah (may Allah
be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace
and blessings be upon him) said
He who recites after every prayer: Subhan Allah (Allah
is free from imperfection) thirty-three times; Al-hamdu
lillah (praise be to Allah) thirty-three times; Allahu
Akbar (Allah is Greatest) thirty-three times; and
DID YOU KNOW - TakbeereTashreeq
It is compulsory on each Muslim to recite the following takbeer
from the ‘Fajr’ of the 9th Dhul -Hijjah up to the 'Asr’ prayer of
the 13th, after every Fardh Salah in the following words.
“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,
La Ilaha Illallahu, Wallahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar wa lillahilhamd”
(There is no god but Allah and Allah is the greatest, Allah
is the greatest and to Allah belongs all praise.)
completes the hundred with: La ilaha illallahu,
wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu,
wa Huwa `ala kulli shai'in qadir (there is no true god
except Allah. He is One and He has no partner. His is
the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is
Omnipotent), will have all his sins pardoned even if
they may be as large as the foam on the surface of the
sea. (Muslim)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) also
reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) said
He who says Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free
from imperfection and His is the praise) one hundred
times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are
equal to the extent of the foam of the sea. (Al-Bukhari
and Muslim)
Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him)
reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) said
He who utters ten times La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la
sharika lahu, lahulmulku wa lahulhamdu, wa Huwa `ala
kulli sha'in qadir (There is no true god except Allah. He
is One and He has no partner. His is the sovereignty
and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent), he will
have a reward equal to that for freeing four slaves from
the progeny of Prophet Isma`il. (Al-Bukhari and
Muslim)
The Precious hours
In a wonderful Hadeeth, the Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him) said that on the last third of
every night, Allah Almighty calls to His servants:
Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to
his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I
may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking
My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him? (Al-Bukhari
and Muslim)
Why do we miss this golden opportunity? Now is the
right time to expose yourself to His divine generosity
and mercy. If you are going to fast during these days,
you are most likely to wake up a little bit earlier than
usual to have your sahur. So, seize the opportunity
and pray two rak`ahs, and ask Allah to forgive your
sins and to grant you happiness in this world and in the
hereafter. Do not forget your brothers and sisters who
suffer around the world.
The doors of goodness are numerous and wide open.
There are many ways to Paradise, and the more time
and effort you give, the more reward and blessings you
will get.
DID YOU KNOW – Fasting can be HARAM
Fasting on the two days of `Eid is Haraam (forbidden), as indicated
by the Hadeeth of Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with
Him) who said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting
on the day of Al-Fitr and [the day of] An-Nahr [Sacrifice]” (Al-
Bukhari and Muslim).
It is also Haraam to fast on the Days of Tashreeq, which are the
three days after `Eid Al-Adha (11, 12 and 13 Dhul-Hijjah) because
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The Days of
Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking, and remembering
Men should say it in louder wise while women should keep
their AL-ISLAH voice low.
Allah” (Muslim).
Islamic History
Maulana Raasheed Pakwashi
“Indeed the first house designated for man (as a
direction to worship Allah) was the one at Bakkah which
is blessed and a guidance for the universe.”
(Al Imran, Verse 96)
As a Muslim there is no need to elaborate on the
importance and the sacredness of “Al Kabah”. A house
so blessed that merely gazing at its 4 walls earns one
20 blessings, and so revered that an identical house
parallel to it exists in the very heavens.
The Prophet (SAW) said about his ascension to the
seventh heaven that I was taken to “Al Bait Ul ma‟moor”
it is visited everyday by seventy thousand angels who
will not come back to visit it again” (Bukhari/Muslim)
Not only is the house it self sacred but that very plot is
the origin of land on earth
Ka‟ab Ah‟bar states, “There were foams and bubbles on
water before the formation of land, at
the place where there is „Baitullah‟
today. The land was spread from
here.” (Ibn Katheer)
Though Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is known
as the founder and craftsman of the
Kabah, the sacred house existed well
before the advent of mankind, erected
by the angels and was then
reconstructed by none other than
Hazrat Adam (AS). Allah raised his beloved house at
the time of Nuh‟s (AS) Deluge and nothing but the
Heavenly inspired foundations remained, cloaked by the
sands of time before Allah ordered Ibrahim (AS) and his
son Ismaeel (AS) to raise the Kabah on those very
foundations.
It was this very structure which was preserved
throughout the centuries by the Amaaliqa, Jurhum and
early Qurashi tribes who had become the inhabitants of
the desolate desert in the vicinity of the Kabah.
It was only 18 years prior to the Hijrah when the leaders
of the Quraish found a need to entirely reconstruct the
sacred house. The new design had to address the
prevailing security issues (treasures had been stolen
from inside the Kabah), and structural issues (Rain and
flood water would accumulate in and around the Kabah
causing serious wall damage) and when all things
considered according to historians the sacred house
had been standing for over 3000 years.
The Quraish began by raising funds for the proposal. It
was universally agreed that only pure and lawful money
would be used for the construction. This is how Allah
ensured that his beloved house would only be erected
through pure means.
When the time finally came to demolish the existing
structure, their hearts betrayed them and they stood
transfixed. Who would have the nerve to tear down their
most beloved and sacred monument. Finally Waleed
bin Mugairah stepped forward saying “O Allah, we have
nothing but good intentions” and began the process.
The Quraish watched in awe and total fear. They
decided to see whether Waleed would be struck down
by some heavenly calamity. When Waleed returned the
next morning safe and sound there doubts were swept
away and they collectively joined in the work.
The new Kabah was distinctively dissimilar to the Kabah
of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Firstly the walls of the
Kabah were raised twofold, a roof was included, the
second door on the western side was sealed off and the
eastern door was raised in order to allow the Quraish to
control access into the Kabah. And the most important
change was due to a lack of funds an area of 3 meters
could not be included in the construction and was
marked out by a low semi-circular wall known to us as
the Hateem.
Abdullah Ibn Zubayr (RA) said, "I heard Aisha (RA) say,
The Prophet (SAW) said: "If your people had not quite
recently abandoned the Ignorance (Unbelief), and if I
had sufficient provisions to rebuild it [the Kabah], I
would have added five cubits to it from the Hijr
(Hateem). Also, I would make two doors; one for people
to enter therein and the other to exit." (Bukhari).
In 64 Hijri Ibn Zubayr decided to
construct the Kabah the way Prophet
Muhammad (SAW) wanted it, on the
foundation and model of the Prophet
Ibrahim (AS).
Ibn Zubayr said, "Today, I can afford
to do so and I do not fear the people.
Ibn Zubayr built the Kabah on Prophet
Ibrahim's (AS) foundation and
therefore the Hateem area was
included. He also included two doors, one facing the
east the other facing the west, both at ground level
allowing through access.
During the reign of Abdul Malik bin Marwan, Al-Hajjaj
bin Yusuf al-Thaqafi, besieged Makkah and ultimately
martyred Ibn Zubayr. Then with the Caliph‟s approval
demolished what Ibn Zubayr had added to it from the
older foundation of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and restored
its old structure as the Quraish had built it.
It was only whilst on Umra when the Caliph heard the
Hadeeth of Aisha (RA) that he deeply regretted his
actions.
Caliph Harun al Rasheed wanted to rebuild the Kabah
the way Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wanted and the
way Abdullah Ibn Zubayr built it. But when he consulted
Imam Malik, the Imam implored the Caliph to reconsider
in order that the Kabah does not become a plaything for
the future leaders (each one constructing it to his own
preference).
The Caliph agreed and though the Kabah has been
reconstructed twice since, the Kabah designed by the
Quraish has remained and will remain so through divine
protection on this earth as long as there are those to
face it.
Just For Women
her husband. When he looks at her, she pleases
him." (BAIHAQI).
It is the habit of certain women as soon as the
husband steps into the house after a tiring day
at work, they start complaining that such and
such a thing is not in the house or begin to shout
at the children. A pious wife does not have such
a bad habit as she welcomes him cheerfully and
pleases him with her company, inquires about
his work, welfare and tries to amuse him.
Divorce was, a rare occurrence within the British
Muslims, but lately it has become more common
due to the fact that the husband and wife are
both ignorant of Islam and the guidelines that
Islam has set. These guidelines if followed and
acted upon, will lead to a successful and happy
marriage. This article deals with the ideal pious
Muslim wife and the characteristics she should
have and, the do's and don'ts which acted upon
will bring her happiness in this life, her husband
will never divorce her (Inshallah) and Jannah will
be waiting for her in the hereafter.
4. One who guards and preserves her house
and her husbands wealth in his absence.
"The best woman is when he absents himself
(goes away on a journey etc.) she protects his
wealth and honour." (BAIHAQI)
5. One who assists her husband in the matters
of Deen
"The world is a commodity and the best
commodity is a pious woman who assists her
husband in matters concerning the
hereafter." (RAZEEN).
1. A pious wife is one who is obedient to Allah
and her husband.
"The woman who performs her five daily prayers
and keeps the fast of Ramadan and protects
herself from evil acts i.e. adultery and obeys her
husband, has a choice to enter heaven from
whichever door she pleases."
The wife should leave no stone unturned in
obeying, respecting, serving and pleasing her
husband. She should be obedient and loyal with
a willing heart and obey him without hesitation
and negligence in all matters which would, in the
cases of disobedience, put the husband to
trouble or deprive him of some service. No one
holds any right over anybody greater than the
right of the husband over his wife and to
emphasise the high status of the husband and
that the wife should have a great regard for him.
6. One who, if her husband is angry with her,
keeps on politely asking for forgiveness until he
forgives her and is pleased with her again.
“Shall I inform you which woman will enter
heaven?" "the Sahaba (R.A) replied "yes most
certainly." Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi
Wasallam said "the woman, who has children, is
loveable, when she becomes angry the husband
consoles her and when the husband becomes
angry she says that as long as you do not
become pleased with me, I will not even apply
surmah (antimony) to my eyes." (TABRANI)
7. One who manages the household affairs
wisely, decorates and furnishes the house.
Keeps it clean and tidy, renders personal
services such as cooking etc., and doesn't over
incur expenditure of which the husband
disapproves.
12
2. A pious wife is one who doesn't permit
strangers to enter her house and anyone else
who's entering her house displeases her
husband, even though it maybe her friends.
"O men! It is your right over your wives that they
do not seat strangers on your bed and do not
allow those men whose coming to your house
you do not like, without your
permission." (TIRMIDHI).
3. One who pleases her husband when he looks
at her.
“That the best woman is the one that pleases
8. One who doesn't ask her husband for more
than he can afford.
9. One who doesn't engage herself in optional
worship (nafl ibaadat) without his permission. As
this optional worship may hinder the discharge
of the husband's rights.
"It is not permissible for any woman to fast
optionally without her husband's permission, and
it is not permissible for her to allow anyone into
his house without permission." (BUKHARI).
10. One who doesn't disclose one's sexual
relationship with her husband to others. It is
immodest and shameless to describe the act of
love-making before friends. The newly-married
don't hesitate to reveal their experiences to their
friends, this is HARAM.
"The worst person on the Day of QIY AMAH will
be the one who reveals the private life of his wife
to others." (MUSLIMS).
"Among abuse of trust, the greatest abuse of
trust in the court of Allah on the Day of
Judgement is that the husband may go to his
wife or the wife may go to the husband (referring
to the act of love-making) and thereafter they
reveal this secret to others." (ABU DAUD).
11. One when her husband desires and calls
her, she comes happily.
"When a husband calls his wife at night to have
relations with her and she refuses without a valid
reason, she is cursed through the night by the
angles." (IBUKHARI)
12. One who doesn't leave her house without her
husband's consent.
"When a woman leaves the house without her
husband's consent, all the angles of the skies
and the entire universe curse her, for this act
until she returns home." (TABRANI)
13. One who after sitting with her friends or a
gathering doesn't describe any woman to her
husband, as this may incline the husband
towards this woman.
"O woman. After sitting in a gathering of women,
do not go home and explicitly describe any
woman to your husband." (MUSLIM)
14. One who doesn't offend the husband by
being harsh to his relations especially the inlaws.
If the wife has the above mentioned
characteristics, she will be the most precious
treasure to her husband and he will never
divorce her (Inshallah) as she will be a source of
joy and comfort for him.
The whole world is a provision and the best
object of benefit of the world is the virtuous wife.
Stories Of Pious Women
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh)
Âsiyah
She is the wife of Firaun, the king of Egypt who had claimed to be god. Look at the power of Allah that
the husband was a Shaytaan while the wife was so pious that the Quran praises her and our Rasul
Sallallaahu „Alaihi wa Sallam has spoken about her in the following terms: "There are many men who
have reached stages of excellence. However, from among the women, no one reached a stage of
excellence except Maryam and Âsiyah. It was Âsiyah who had saved the life of Mûsâ from the tyrant,
Pharaoh."
As mentioned in the story of Mûsâ's „Alayhis Salam sister's story, it was already written in her
(Âsiyah's) favour that she will bring Imaan on Mûsâ „alayhis salâm. She had a natural love for him
since his infancy. When Mûsâ „alayhis salâm received prophethood, Pharaoh did not bring Imaan on
him. However, she brought Imaan on him. When Pharaoh heard about this, he became extremely
harsh to her and imposed many punishments on her. However, she did not relinquish her Imaan and
left the world in this state.
Lesson: Look at how firm she was on her Imaan. Despite her kâfir husband imposing severe
difficulties on her, she did not succumb to him. Today, when one experiences minor difficulties, one
begins uttering words of kufr. O women! imam is a very great gift. Irrespective of the nature of
difficulty, never ever do anything contrary to the Dîn. If the husband does anything irreligious, don't
ever support or join him. In those days, marriage with a kâfir husband was valid. However, the rule in
our Shari'ah is that if the husband is a kâfir, the marriage is not valid. And if he becomes a kâfir after
marriage, the marriage will be annulled.
The Ka’bah
The Ka'bah is the house of Allah. It was built by prophet Ibrahim (as) and
his son Ismail (as), thousands of years ago. Allah had told Ibrahim (as) to
build the Ka'bah at this spot so that people will come here and worship
Allah.
Ibrahim (as) and Ismail (as) used big stones to build the Ka'bah. The Ka'bah
was so big that Ibrahim (as) could not reach the higher part of it to put the
stones there. He never had a ladder so he stood on a rock. Allah made the
rock rise of the ground so he could reach higher up.
This rock still has Ibrahim's (as) footprints on it and is called the Maqaam-i-
Ibrahim.
A gift from Allah
Ibrahim (as) was a great prophet of Allah. He was given the title of Khalil-
Allah which means the friend of Allah. He was commanded to take his son
Ismail and wife Hajra to a distant land and leave them there. This was in a
barren valley between the Hills of Safa and Marwa in a place that we know
as Makkah today.
The family made the long journey together and Ibrahim (as) left them,
just as Allah had commanded him. He left them with some dates and
water. Ibrahim (as) said farewell and made the long journey back.
The food and water ran out and Hajra was panicking. As baby Ismail began to cry she
panicked and ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search for water. She was hopeful
she might see some travellers and get water or food from them.
After running between the two hills seven times, she returned to baby
Ismail. She found that where Ismail was kicking his feet in the sand, a
spring had sprung from the ground. The water was sweet and both
mother and baby drank from it.
14
This spring is still there today and is know as Zam Zam. When the Hajjis return to their
families they bring a special gift of Zam Zam. When you drink this water think back to
baby Ismail and the great favour Allah had given to him. This is the same water that Allah
caused to come from the ground many thousands of years ago.
Hajj & Qurbani
The Cobbler's Hajj
'Verily in their stories are lessons for men of
understanding.'
Abdullah-e Mubarak and Ali ibn al-Mowaffaq
Abdullah was living at Makkah. One year, having
completed the rites of the pilgrimage, he fell asleep. In
a dream he saw two angels descend from heaven.
“How many have come this year?” one asked the
other.
“Six hundred thousand,” the other replied.
“How many have had their pilgrimage accepted?”
“Not one.”
“When I heard this,” Abdullah reports, “I was filled with
trembling. „What?‟ I cried. „All these people have come
from afar out of the distant ends of the earth and with
great pain and weariness from every deep ravine,
traversing wide deserts, and all their labour is in vain?‟
„There is a cobbler in Damascus called Ali ibn
Mowaffaq,‟ said the angel. „He has not come on the
pilgrimage , but his pilgrimage is accepted and all his
sins have been forgiven.‟
“When I heard this,” Abdullah continued, “I awoke
saying, „I must go to Damascus and visit that person.‟
So I went to Damascus and looked for where he lived. I
shouted, and someone came out. „What is your name?‟
I asked. „Ali ibn Mowaffaq,‟ he replied. „I wish to speak
with you,‟ I said. „Say on,‟ he replied. „What work do
you do?‟ „I cobble.‟ I then told him of my dream. „What
is your name?‟ he enquired when I had done. „Abdullah
-e Mubarak,‟ I replied. He uttered a cry and fell in a
faint. When he recovered I said to him, „Tell me your
story.‟
“The man told me, „For thirty years now I have longed
to make the pilgrimage. I had saved up three hundred
and fifty dirhams from my cobbling. This year I had
resolved to go to Makkah. One day the good lady
within becoming pregnant, she smelt the smell of food
coming from next door. “Go and fetch me a bit of that
food,” she begged me. I went and knocked on the
neighbour‟s door and explained the situation. My
neighbour burst into tears. “My children have eaten
nothing for three days together,” she said. “Today I
saw a donkey lying dead, so I hacked off a piece and
cooked it. It would not be lawful food for you.” My heart
burned within me when I heard her tale. I took out the
three hundred and fifty dirhams and gave them to her.
“Spend these on the children,” I said. “This is my
pilgrimage.” „
“The angel spoke truly in my dream,” Abdullah
declared, “and the Heavenly King was true in His
judgment.”
connects us to our creator and the greater compassion
of humanity.
Offering Qurbani (sacrifice) during `Eid Al-Adha is
regarded as wajib (mandatory) according to Imam Abu
Hanifah and a as Sunnah Mu'akkadah (stressed Sunnah)
according to other jurists.
All those people who have the Nisab (payable amount) of
Zakah should offer a sacrifice. The time for offering a
sacrifice begins after the `Eid Al-Adha prayer. According
to a Hadeeth, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon
him) said that whosoever offered a sacrifice before the
`Eid prayer, he or she just slaughtered an animal for meat,
but whosoever made sacrifice after the `Eid Al-Adha
prayer, he or she has offered a sacrifice. (Reported by Al-
Bukhari)
Qurbani (sacrifice) is an act of worship Ibadah). As we
have the times of prayers so we also have time for making
a sacrifice during `Eid Al-Adha. The time of sacrifice
remains until sunset on the 12th day Dhul-Hijjah. It is not
required for the head of the household to offer a separate
Qurbani (sacrifice) for every member of the house, rather
one sacrifice would be sufficient for the whole family.
However, if other members of family own the Nisab of
Zakah, then they must offer their own sacrifice. One goat,
lamb or sheep is on behalf of one person, but seven
people can share in offering one cow or camel.
The Qurbani is the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim, Prophet
Isma`il and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them all)
It has a meaning and significance. It reminds us of the
great act of sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim and Isma`il were
willing to do for the sake of Almighty Allah. Allah spared
the life of Prophet Isma`il, but He told us that [And We
ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice.] (As-Saffaat
37:107). The "momentous sacrifice (dhibhin azhim) is the
sacrifice of the billions of people who have been
remembering this tradition for the last four thousand years.
Other people who claim to follow Prophet Ibrahim have
forgotten this tradition, but we Muslims have kept it alive
without any interruption. We must keep this Sunnah and
should not forget it.
There is no substitute for Qurbani. However, if one wants
to offer a nafl (non-obligatory) sacrifice on behalf of
oneself or one's deceased parents or some other
relatives, one has a choice either to make Qurbani or give
the price of the animal in charity.
16
God is merciful and shows mercy to those who do
likewise to his creatures. This act of compassion on the
part of the cobbler was so pleasing to God that it not
only earned him the reward of Hajj but was extended to
all the people who came for Hajj.
The meat of the Qurbani should be divided in three equal
portions: one for oneself and the family, one for friends,
and one for the poor and needy. If there are more poor
people, then it is good to give all of it in charity to the poor
and needy. Here in the UK we may not need the meat that
much, but there are many other places where people do
not get meat. It is also recommended for us here in UK to
do one Qurbani at home, so that our children are aware of
this blessed Sunnah, and also to give the money to some
dependable relief organizations in order to make Qurbani
on our behalf; and to distribute the meat among the poor
and needy in poor countries and in countries where
Hajj is a journey that can ignite the soul to be reminded
of the time it was created and takes it beyond the
dimensions of this life to the time it will meet the
creator.
