GOING GREEN
Not many new presidents publish an
extensive website the day following their
election. President-elect Barack Obama
has just launched his administration’s
website, www.change.gov. It is very
informative and inspiring to see how he
plans to manifest his campaign promises.
I encourage you to take a look at it,
and to voice your opinion as well.
The section that most interests me
is the one called Revitalizing the
Economy. Obama and Biden put forth
a plan to create 5 million new green
jobs. Their plan includes an
Advanced Manufacturing Fund to
reward the most innovative strategies
to create new manufacturing products
and jobs. They also plan to
invest more than $150 million in
renewable energy in the next 10
years. This will help to accelerate the
development of plug-in hybrids, the
next generation of biofuels, and commercial
scale renewable energy.

Part of the mix includes the creation
of Renewable Portfolio
Standards (RPS) on a national scale.
Presently, 25 states plus the District
of Columbia have RPS, which require
them to produce a particular percentage
of their energy from renewable
sources. Most states standards range
from 10 percent to 25 percent.
Obama and Biden propose that the
entire nation produce 25 percent of
its energy from renewable sources by
the year 2025. This will require a
more unified national energy grid,
which we do not have at this time.
Another piece of the puzzle must
be to welcome U. S. business back to
America. Obama proposes a tax
credit to those businesses that keep
their corporate headquarters in
America and pay a fair wage and provide
health insurance. PJH
