Glasney College Penryn.
Although by no means the oldest Christian community in Cornwall, Penryn can justly regard itself as having been one of the most
colourful due to the founding in 1264 by Bishop Bronescombe of Glasney College. Designed to train men for the priesthood, the
college charter laid down that the students should live within the religious style and duties of men attached to a Cathedral; that they
should be present at all services and that they should dedicate their time at Glasney to worship, learning and teaching.
Unfortunately it seems that these commendably high ideals rather went by the board, for a succession of investigations, commissions
and inquiries into Glasney revealed a story of womanising; neglected duties; and the disappearance of college property. Therefore
when it went into decline in the sixteenth century at the time of Henry viii, the authorities breathed a sigh of relief and did little to try
to nurse it back into active life as it gradually crumbled away, many of its stones and doorways being used in the construction of new
homes in Penryn.
