If you have any questions call Bonnie, (317) 838-9870; Audrey, (317) 786-
3016; or Betty, (317) 846-2800. We hope to see you on Thursday, October 25, for
the next meeting.
Band
This morning, as I opened my
big brown blood-shot eyes, my Shrine
“No Win” calendar told me, “Hey, it’s
Labor Day.” As a typical procrastinator,
I was happy – not just because of the
holiday (because I’m not in the workforce
anyway) but because I have an
extra four days to meet Cliff’s magazine
deadline.
Oh what a beautiful feeling as
the band approaches a downhill pull
to what has been a terrific 2007 with a
net gain in membership. What do you
Leonard Hull
Phil Thrasher, P.P., doing a fabulous job of
playing the calliope and directing the
band. Cheers to Phil.
think could cause such a triumph? The answer as always – teamwork. Let me count
our blessings. First, a grand showing of the greatest show in Shrinedom, the Murat
Circus. Just for starters: an average attendance of 37 for six performances, the reappearance
of the refurbished calliope at the capable hands of Doyt Cassel, the
five-foot biggest bass drum in Shrinedom and voted the best circus unit.
Second, determination of our leaders. Kerbela Fun Festival; after equipment
breakdown in route, our president, John, with capable chauffeur Paul Gartin,
maneuvered “Worden’s Wagon” some 400 miles to Pigeon Forge to take parade first
place with 14 aboard to the “oomph pha pha” of the calliope. Paul charging back
and forth from the cab of the prime mover to restart the generator some 60 feet
from the cockpit.
Third, a parade down the narrow streets of Batesville on borrowed equipment
celebrating the 100th anniversary of Batesville Masonic Lodge.
Of course, interim concerts at Altenheim Community Center, Indiana Masonic
Home, Keystone Masonic Lodge Fish Fry, Shelbyville Bears of Blue River parade
(another first place). We continually went through our list of numbers. These were
“Indiana Our Indiana” (this is the tune to Shelbyville fight song of the Shelbyville
High School. It was well received all along the way), “Hey Look Me Over,” “Back
Home Again in Indiana,” “Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies,” and the always bringing
rounds of applause, “Rocky Top.”
The most rewarding aspect of participating in any parade is to see the sheer
joy and happiness we bring to the children. To see an obviously “special” child
looking at us in utter amazement and to get his or her eye, wave and say, “hi” is
all the reward anybody would ever want for the sweat, sunburn, fatigue, sore lips
and maybe another small dent in an instrument.
Now on October 6, Worden’s Wagon will sojourn to Greenfield, IN, vying for
the fifth “first” place trophy of the year to The Riley Festival. The home of James
Whitcomb Riley, the theme this year is Riley’s poem: “The Mulberry Tree.”
Well, summer is almost gone and
by the time you read this article, our
2007 parade season will be a thing of
the past. But we will again be ready to
officers for their help – especially Russ
Butters for his parade marshal duties
this year. The Club would like to offer
Russ and his lady, Bobby, our condolences
and hope for their grandson’s
well-being in the coming year.
We are always looking for new
riders. Any Nobles who are interested
in riding with a great group of guys are
welcome to come to any of our Stated
Meetings and join for next year’s parade
