HOMEOWNERSHIP PROGRAM
Habitat for Humanity reduces the barriers to homeownership for individuals and families who are in
financially vulnerable situations. In Canada, these barriers include the escalating cost of housing, high
down-payments and unwieldy mortgage interest costs. To overcome these hurdles, we minimize
the cost of our homes by using donated materials and volunteer labour. We allocate all mortgage
payments we receive from homeowners back into our Homeownership Program. These measures
allow us to offer Habitat for Humanity houses to the owners for an affordable price, with no downpayment
and no-interest mortgages. The Homeownership Program helps participants reduce their
total housing costs and build equity for the future. Just as important, it allows people to experience,
for the first time, the feelings of homeownership: joy, pride, security and warmth.
