VISION
A world where everyone has
a safe and decent place to live.

MISSION
To mobilize volunteers and
XXXX
community partners in building
affordable housing and promoting
Xxxx homeownership as a means to
Xxxx breaking the cycle of poverty.

A Message from our Leadership
Amazing things happen to people when they have a home. They become healthier, happier and better equipped to face life’s
challenges and seize its opportunities.
Habitat for Humanity – by helping people achieve the dream of homeownership – does more than provide them with a fixed
address, we give them a voice, a sense of stability, and a critical ‘hand up’ in their effort to break the vicious and disabling cycle
of poverty that may have been holding them back from realizing their full potential.
Addressing the issue of affordable housing and giving people a place to call home is not just an act of charity or generosity. It’s a
strategic investment in our society. For what we don’t spend on housing today, we will spend several times over in the future on
education, health care, correctional institutions, and in rebuilding the very fabric of our communities that are torn asunder when
people are without a safe and decent place to live.
Unfortunately, over 1.5 million Canadians and well over 1 billion families around the world are living today in substandard housing
and having to make unthinkable and unjust choices between food, electricity, education, childcare and medical care on the one
hand, and shelter on the other.
That’s why Habitat for Humanity Canada and our over 35,000 volunteers in over 70 communities across the country are working
tirelessly to build more homes for families in need. It’s also why we are going beyond our role as homebuilders and community
builders to build something just as imperative: a national movement for affordable housing. Through our “Leaders Building A
Nation” initiative, we are asking people from all walks of life to join us in building homes and hope for those who – for reasons
beyond their control – have fallen on difficult times.
In this report, you will learn how an ever-growing number of volunteers, donors and partners have helped us achieve
unprecedented successes this past year as we continue to expand our homebuilding efforts at home and abroad. You will read
how we are working to build better, faster, greener and safer. You will see how we are seeking out new ways of doing things,
and how we are holding ourselves accountable as stewards of the resources entrusted to us. Most importantly, you will see that
our work has just begun, and that we are putting out a call to action to the leaders who will help us in this important mission.
We encourage you to learn more about Habitat for Humanity. Come join us in our work and open the door to homeownership for
millions of people in Canada and around the world.
Building Homes. Building Hope.
OUR CORE VALUES
HOUSING FOR ALL
We believe that access to safe, decent and
affordable housing is a basic human right that
should be available to all.
HUMAN DIGNITY
We believe in the worth and dignity of every
human being. We respect the people we
serve and those who help us in this effort and
recognize them as our greatest resource.
PARTNERSHIP
We believe we can best achieve our mission
through meaningful and mutually-beneficial
partnerships with others.
FAITH IN ACTION
We believe that faith is lived through action.
Building on our Christian foundation, we serve
and work with people of all faiths and beliefs in a
spirit of justice and compassion.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS
We believe there is a role for everyone
committed to our vision, mission and values,
and we seek to enrich our organization through
diversity.
HELPING OTHERS
“Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating and its
members see the benefit of being part of Habitat
for Humanity and its mission of providing affordable,
safe housing for those who need a hand up within
our communities. People often take for granted what
they have and being part of Habitat allows us to see
the reward of doing something for those in need. Our
members’ products and services are a great fit with
building houses, and hats off to our members for their
continued support of our involvement with Habitat
over the year.”
Mr. Ken Webster
Chairman of the Board
The Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating
Building Homes. Building Hope.
HOME BUILDS PEOPLE
For years, our work has allowed us to see incredible things happen
when people build a home. But even more incredible is seeing how
home builds people. Because when people have access to affordable,
suitable, adequate housing in all its forms—from Habitat homes to
public housing units—their lives improve 100%.
People gain the stability they need to find and keep a job. Families can
plant roots and become proud, connected members of a community.
Seniors and people with special needs can live with a sense of wellbeing
and independence. New Canadians can pursue the brighter
future that first led them to this country. And lives of homelessness can
become lives of hope.
By building people, home is also building something else: our country.
A well-housed population is one that can create thriving communities,
forge new opportunities, and make Canada a home to everything it
stands for as a nation—a place where all people deserve a chance to
build a better life.
Habitat for Humanity believes that chance should be at every
Canadian’s doorstep.
LEADERS BUILDING A NATION
We believe that our role goes beyond that of
homebuilder, and that’s why we are building
something just as imperative: a national
movement for affordable housing.
More than 1.5 million Canadians need affordable
housing right now, and 1 billion people around
the world are without a safe, decent place to
live. In Canada, housing costs continue to rise
while 5 million Canadians earn salaries below
the low income cut-off. For many hard-working
Canadians, homeownership seems to be an
impossible goal.
But we can do something about it.
• Canada is facing a national emergency
on poverty, welfare, homelessness and
housing (United Nations, 2006)
• Housing costs are the worst in a decade
(Royal Bank of Canada, 2006)
• Over 1 million Canadian households spend
more than half of their household income
on shelter costs (CMHC, 2006)
In May 2006, Habitat for Humanity Canada and
its national affiliates committed to a bold 5-year
strategic plan, Leaders Building a Nation, that
challenges our association to engage more
partners, reach new levels of efficiency and
effectiveness, and ultimately provide more
homes for families in need of a brighter future.
Our donors play a vital role in achieving this plan.
They donate funds and products, lend their time,
expertise and passion, all because they share our
vision of a world where every man, woman and
child has a safe place to call home. We celebrate
how far we have come together, and challenge
other leaders to step up with us and address one
of the most pressing social issues of our time.
LEADING THE WAY
“Whether it’s seeing the look on a family’s face when
they receive the keys to their new home or watching
the sweat pour off the brow of one of our associates,
every encounter with this wonderful organization has
brought me great pleasure. As the Chair of Habitat
Canada’s National President’s Council, I also urge
other CEO’s and Presidents to join me and countless
other business leaders to help support the great cause
of affordable housing. Through Habitat, we can help
thousands of people every year, one family at a time.”
Habitat for Humanity Canada
Structure and Programs
ROLE OF OUR NATIONAL OFFICE
Habitat for Humanity Canada provides the
national profile and resources required to support
the vital work of our member affiliates in 71
Canadian communities. Working together, we
are engaging people across the country—in local
neighbourhoods, in boardrooms and on build
sites—to give a hand up to families in need.
AFFILIATE SHARED SERVICES AND
INFRASTRUCTURE
By enhancing the organizational capacity of our
affiliates across Canada, we are able to increase
our building rate and serve more families in need.
Habitat for Humanity Canada transfers donated
funds and gifts-in-kind to affiliates in Canada and
abroad in support of their building activities. Our
national office also helps affiliates by providing
training programs, annual conferences, leadership
development, shared employee services, and
guidance in the local implementation of national
policies and branded programs.
EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY
Habitat for Humanity Canada strives to
increase public and governmental awareness
about poverty and housing issues in order to
make affordable housing a matter of public
responsibility. We are actively involved in events
and programs across Canada to help mobilize
people to act, and motivate governments to
develop beneficial policies. We also collaborate
with international organizations that share our
vision for a world in which everyone has a
decent, affordable place to live.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
The work of Habitat for Humanity Canada is
made possible through a diverse resource base
which supports the stability and long-term
growth of the organization. We raise funds
through corporate partnership programs, direct
mail outreach and online giving. Through the
donation of funds, gifts-in-kind and volunteer
time from individuals, corporations, faith groups,
foundations and community organizations, we
are able to minimize our building costs and
provide our partner families with access to
affordable home mortgages.
GOVERNANCE
Habitat for Humanity Canada is governed by
a National Board of Directors that is elected
by, and representative of, our national affiliate
membership. This board oversees all national
policy and bylaw recommendations and
approvals. It governs the activities of our national
office through committees aligned with the
major activities and strategic priorities of the
organization. As stewards of national donor
funds, we fully recognize and deliver on our
responsibility for openness, transparency and
honesty in the management of all resources
entrusted to our care.
HOUSING FOR ALL
“RBC is proud to be a long-term supporter of Habitat
for Humanity, an organization that promotes affordable
housing through homeownership with all people
regardless of race or religion. RBC is in the business of
helping people purchase their own homes,
so that is why our support of Habitat fits so nicely
with our commitment to encourage homeownership
for all Canadians.”
Executive Director, RBC Foundation
CANADIAN
AFFILIATES
OUR LOCAL PRESENCE
The mission of Habitat for Humanity Canada is delivered
by affiliates in 71 communities across the country.
Affiliates select and prepare partner families for
homeownership, manage the construction of homes, and
work with volunteers from corporations, faith groups and
community organizations. They play a vital role at the local
level, engaging community partners who are able to help
us by contributing valuable resources. Our affiliates also
coordinate events and activities designed to raise funds
and awareness in their cities and towns.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORES
Many of our affiliates operate Habitat for Humanity
ReStores—retail environments that generate muchneeded
funds for affiliate operations by accepting new and
used building supplies from donors, and reselling them to
the general public. ReStores divert over 12,000 tonnes of
material from landfills each year, supporting our vision of
sustainable communities. In 2006, there were 51 ReStores
in Canada.
AN EXEMPLARY VOLUNTEER
Where would Habitat for Humanity PEI
be without Jim Wicks? Jim has been
consistently advocating for affordable
housing and the elimination of poverty in
PEI since 1996. The most recognizable
spokesperson for Habitat PEI, he is also
its founder.
As President of Habitat PEI for five
years, Jim has showcased excellent
leadership at all levels within the affiliate
– from building homes, to fundraising,
to administrative responsibilities. And no
task is below him. Even as President,
Jim would personally make the wooden
plaques given out to volunteers, and
would drive to a neighbouring community
to take water samples.
Jim’s passion for Habitat for Humanity has
extended to his family. His wife Myrna has
committed years as a member of Habitat
PEI’s Family Committee, and so has his
son Matt, who serves on the Construction
Committee. Jim was awarded the
Volunteer of the Year Award at the 2006
Habitat for Humanity Canada Annual
General Meeting.
OUR GLOBAL REACH
As one of the largest and most respected charities in the
world, Habitat for Humanity consists of active affiliate
member organizations building in more than 3,000
communities, in 93 countries worldwide. A dynamic global
movement—the 200,000 th Habitat for Humanity house
was completed in August 2005. Astonishingly, a new
Habitat for Humanity house is dedicated somewhere in
the world every 21 minutes.
In 2006, Habitat for Humanity Canada supported the
construction of 100 homes in other countries—half of
them through the Global Village Canada program, the other
half with funds received from Habitat affiliates and private
donors. This was twice as many homes as we were able
to support in 2005. Looking forward, we expect to double
our impact again in 2007 by supporting 200 homes in
developing countries.
REBUILDING LIVES
“During a company-sponsored trip
to Louisiana last fall, our employees
witnessed the difference one life can
make in another, as they helped rebuild
homes destroyed by hurricanes Katrina
and Rita.These employees returned
passionate about the cause and with a
new appreciation for Tolko. Habitat for
Humanity is a cause we proudly support.”
Structure and Programs
HOMEOWNERSHIP PROGRAM
Habitat for Humanity reduces the barriers to homeownership for individuals and families who are in
financially vulnerable situations. In Canada, these barriers include the escalating cost of housing, high
down-payments and unwieldy mortgage interest costs. To overcome these hurdles, we minimize
the cost of our homes by using donated materials and volunteer labour. We allocate all mortgage
payments we receive from homeowners back into our Homeownership Program. These measures
allow us to offer Habitat for Humanity houses to the owners for an affordable price, with no downpayment
and no-interest mortgages. The Homeownership Program helps participants reduce their
total housing costs and build equity for the future. Just as important, it allows people to experience,
for the first time, the feelings of homeownership: joy, pride, security and warmth.
12

BECOMING A
PARTNER FAMILY
Habitat for Humanity could not succeed without the hard work, dedication
and courage of our partner families. People living below the poverty line
who are able to repay an interest-free mortgage may qualify to become
partner families with Habitat for Humanity. These future homeowners put
in hundreds of hours of sweat equity, share the labour of homebuilding, and
participate in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives
are often transformed by the positive experience of receiving a hand up,
and the many benefits that come from owning their own home.
VOLUNTEERS ARE
ESSENTIAL
More than 35,000 people have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity
Canada, and thousands more have helped to build homes in other countries
through the Global Village program. We depend strongly on our volunteers.
They may be professional tradespeople donating a portion of their time and
expertise, or first-time builders who have never hammered a single nail.
Experienced builders gain the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed
something of real value to people who need it most. Newcomers have
the opportunity to learn construction skills in a supportive and safe
environment, and feel the pride of giving back to their community and their
society. Other volunteers work behind the scenes—on committees, raising
funds, creating advertising, supporting families and advocating in their own
communities. Through their combined efforts, volunteers enable us to
control the costs of homebuilding, and make housing affordable. They are
vital to our ongoing success.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HALTON’S
FOURTH HOME — ONE YEAR LATER
The Kettanah family has been living in their Habitat
Home in Burlington for about a year, and they happily
report an “enormous effect on their quality of life”.
Abraham, the youngest child in the family, is severely
handicapped. Living in an apartment posed several
difficulties. He suffered from many colds because the
environment could not be controlled. Access to the
outside was complex and risky. His behaviour upset
some of the other tenants.
But in the new Habitat Home, Abraham has been
much healthier. He started to go to school, and
is picked up by a bus in the driveway of his own
home. The house is designed to accommodate his
wheelchair, other utilities, and future requirements.
Abraham’s father, Tawfik Kettanah, says, “We thank
the Lord for all happenings and we believe that
thanking people is part of thanking God. Thank you
Habitat!”
(from Fall Edition of the Habitat for Humanity Halton newsletter)
PROVIDING COMFORT
“We have a vision to supply a quality product that will
provide comfort and security to every homeowner that
uses our windows and doors. By working with Habitat
for Humanity, we see many families realize their dreams
in partnership with the many volunteers who extend a
helping hand. It allows our people to truly be part of a
great cause in filling the great need for housing today.
Habitat for Humanity brings the credibility, marketing,
organizational skills, expertise, and experience that we
rely on to complement our vision.”
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
WOMEN BUILD PROGRAM
Our Women Build program encourages women
to experience hands-on participation at our build
sites. All volunteers receive basic training and
are mentored on-site by experienced home
builders. The program enables women to learn
and use construction skills in a safe, supportive
environment.
BUILDING ON FAITH PROGRAM
Habitat for Humanity lets faith groups put
their faith and love into action in a meaningful,
powerful way, by serving as instruments of
God’s love. Our homes serve as a visible and
lasting reminder of God’s grace. Participants
feel a strong sense of unity and purpose when
they join hands and reach out to neighbours in
need. Faith groups help by praying for the work,
sponsoring homes, donating funds, offering inkind
goods and services, becoming volunteers,
feeding workers, and supporting partner families.
Habitat for Humanity thankfully celebrates its
partnerships with the faith community through
an annual global event called Building on Faith.
NATIONAL YOUTH PROGRAM
Habitat for Humanity Canada encourages young
people to experience the rewards of giving back
to their communities. Students run 11 successful
Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapters, located
on university and college campuses, and in high
schools, across Canada. Chapter members help
build homes, become advocates for affordable
housing, and raise funds for local affiliates. The
National Youth Build program aims to engage
youth in the work of Habitat for Humanity to
help develop future community leaders. The
first National Youth Build was held in Winnipeg
in 2006, attracting youth from across Canada
for 10 days of building. In 2006, six groups of
students travelled outside Canada during Spring
Break to support the international work of
Habitat for Humanity.
SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
Protecting the environment and employing
sustainable building practices is of great
importance to Habitat for Humanity in Canada
and to the donors and volunteers who support
our work. We believe that an affordable home
can be a healthy and sustainable home, both
for the families who will live there and for
the communities in which they will reside.
In support of this commitment, Habitat for
Humanity Canada is encouraging and training
our Canadian affiliates to increase the number
of energy efficient homes that are available to
our partner families. We are appealing to our
donors to support this movement by funding and
participating in the growing number of ‘green’
builds across the country.
SAFETY AND HEALTH
The Management and Board of Directors of
Habitat for Humanity Canada believes that the
safety and health of our employees, volunteers
and sub-contractors is of vital importance.
The well-being of Habitat for Humanity in
Canada depends on the safety and health
of our workforce and the protection of our
environment. With this commitment in mind,
Habitat for Humanity Canada has developed
support materials to assist affiliates in developing
a comprehensive Safety, Health and Environment
(SHE) orientation and management system to be
used in conjunction with local safety resources
14

and partnerships. Habitat for Humanity
Canada has expanded partnerships with likeminded
organizations, including the Industrial
Accident Prevention Association (IAPA) and
the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering
(CSSE). We encourage our donors to support
this critical initiative by funding
and participating in the strengthening of our
SHE program.
DISASTER RESPONSE –
OPERATION HOME DELIVERY
Months—or sometimes years—after a disaster
or conflict, many families still live in rundown
shelters. Habitat for Humanity Canada provides
housing assistance to those who have been
affected and displaced. Operation Home
Delivery is helping to rebuild the U.S. Gulf
Coast region in the wake of the devastation
caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Through
partnerships, donations, and volunteer labour,
the rebuilding is underway.
BUILDING HOPE IN HONDURAS
In 2006, Habitat for Humanity Honduras was one
of the largest recipients of Canadian international
funds. These resources were used to support the
Chamelecón project, which assisted residents of
San Pedro Sula. Habitat for Humanity Honduras
helped construct five houses there for families in
need. One little boy named Franklin Jose Garcia
Maldonado worked on a house with his family, and
every time he was asked which house he wanted,
Franklin proudly pointed to ‘his’ house. When the
houses were finished, the five house keys were
placed in a bag for a random draw. To everyone’s
delight, Franklin drew the key that fit ‘his’ front
door. Franklin and his family were elated.
GLOBAL VILLAGE PROGRAM
Habitat for Humanity Canada invites
Canadians to work hand-in-hand with
volunteers in other countries to provide
simple, decent housing—one house at a
time. Anyone with a sense of adventure,
good health and a willingness to pitch in can
join a Global Village team. Participants work
and laugh together, share stories and make
new friends. More importantly, they provide a
hand up to people in need, and leave a lasting
legacy in the communities in which they work.
Success Stories
TOGETHER, WE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN 2006
GROWING CANADIAN REACH
In 2006, the number of Canadian communities
served by a Habitat for Humanity affiliate grew to
71, with the addition of the North Bay & Blue Sky
Region Affiliate.
NEW HOMEOWNERS WELCOMED
Thanks to the efforts of our partners, affiliates,
donors and volunteers, Habitat for Humanity
Canada welcomed 131 new homeowner families
during the year.
WOMEN BUILD PROGRAM PROGRESSING
As part of our growing Women Build program,
affiliates in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba,
Ontario and PEI completed seven Women Builds.
50 TH RESTORE CELEBRATED
In October 2006, we also celebrated the opening
of the 50 th ReStore in Canada. This new ReStore,
which is the first in the province of Quebec,
is managed by Habitat for Humanity Montreal
Southwest affiliate.
ENGAGING YOUNG LEADERS
In May 2006, the first Canadian National Student
Build launched in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For a
two week period, students from across Canada
worked together to build a home alongside the
homeowner family, local volunteers and donors.
The build was made possible through a partnership
among Habitat for Humanity Canada, Habitat for
Humanity Winnipeg, the National Youth Council,
and generous donor The Richardson Foundation.
CANADIAN LAUNCH OF THE
GLOBAL VILLAGE PROGRAM
The Global Village program launched successfully
in Canada in 2006. The program sent 588 people
to join 51 Global Village teams that travelled to
13 countries to build homes. Participants had
the opportunity to learn about other cultures
by developing relationships with people in local
communities. Working together, they built homes,
built hope, and changed lives.
WORLD URBAN FORUM III, VANCOUVER
In 2006, nearly 10,000 attendees from 160 nations
gathered in Vancouver for the third session of
the World Urban Forum, a biennial UN-HABITAT
event focused on urban sustainability. Habitat for
Humanity raised its international profile by hosting
networking events that featured case studies
of its activities from around the world. A special
event showcased Habitat for Humanity Greater
Vancouver’s ‘Burnaby Build’. During the Forum, in a
highly visible location on-site, Habitat for Humanity
volunteers constructed a house that was later
partially disassembled and shipped to Louisiana as
part of Operation Home Delivery.
U.S.-CANADA SOFTWOOD LUMBER
AGREEMENT
In 2006, Habitat for Humanity Canada, together with
Habitat for Humanity International, led the way in
securing a $100 million donation as a result of the
U.S.-Canada softwood lumber dispute resolution.
This significant donation, the largest contribution of
its kind ever received by our organization, was made
to Habitat for Humanity International for the purchase
of lumber to support our homebuilding operations.
HURRICANE RESPONSE IN LOUISIANA
In 2005, hurricanes destroyed communities and
ruined lives on the U.S. Gulf Coast. In response,
Habitat for Humanity launched an emergency
appeal for funds and volunteers to help families
recover and rebuild. In 2006, Habitat for Humanity
affiliates in Louisiana received nearly $200,000 in
contributions from Canadian donors. Nine Canadian
Global Village teams comprising 83 volunteers
rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty
in the rebuilding effort. Habitat for Humanity
Canada also participated in Operation Home
Delivery. Through its “House-in-a-Box” program,
components for seven houses were prefabricated
in Canada, then shipped to the Gulf Coast and
assembled—with the help of Canadian volunteers.
JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT
IN INDIA
The Habitat for Humanity IndiaBUILDS project is
a five-year initiative that was launched in 2005 to
provide new homes for 50,000 families in India by
2010. In 2006, Habitat for Humanity Canada joined
over 2,000 international volunteers—including 30
Canadians—at the Jimmy Carter Work Project
in Lonavala, India. In only one week, numerous
dedicated and hard-working teams helped to
construct 100 new homes for families in need.
A VALUABLE INTERNATIONAL BRAND
Around the world, the Habitat for Humanity brand
has gained significant awareness and influence.
In 2006, international brand consultancy
Interbrand assessed the global brand value of
Habitat for Humanity at U.S. $3.1 billion,
70% growth over the same assessment 17
conducted in 2002.

OUR PARTNERS SHARE OUR VISION
Our partners provide us with the strength and support
we require to achieve our mission. Without them,
we could not build homes—or build hope—for families
in need. Our partners not only raise walls on build sites,
they help us raise the resources we need to do the work
we do. Most of all, they help us get the word out about
the critical need for affordable housing in Canada and around
the world. Their generosity and commitment are clear signs
that they share our vision of a future in which everyone has
a simple, decent and affordable place to live.
AUDITOR’S REPORT
To the Directors of Habitat for Humanity Canada
Habitat pour l’humanité Canada
We have audited the statement of financial position of Habitat for Humanity Canada Habitat pour l’humanite Canada as at December 31,
2006 and the statements of changes in fund balances, operations and cash flows for the year then ended. These financial statements are
the responsibility of the organization’s management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on
our audit.
Except as explained in the following paragraph, we conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing
standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements
are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the
financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management,
as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation.
In common with many charitable organizations, the organization derives revenue from donations and donated gifts-in-kind, the
completeness of which is not susceptible to satisfactory audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited
to the amounts recorded in the records of the organization and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be
necessary to revenue, excess of revenue over expenditures, assets and fund balances.
In our opinion, except for the effect of adjustments, if any, which we might have determined to be necessary had we been able to satisfy
ourselves concerning the completeness of donations referred to in the preceding paragraph, these financial statements present fairly, in
all material respects, the financial position of the organization as at December 31, 2006 and the results of its operations and its cash flows
for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles.
