Success Stories TOGETHER, WE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN <strong>2006</strong> GROWING CANADIAN REACH In <strong>2006</strong>, the number of Canadian communities served by a Habitat for Humanity affiliate grew to 71, with the addition of the North Bay & Blue Sky Region Affiliate. NEW HOMEOWNERS WELCOMED Thanks to the efforts of our partners, affiliates, donors and volunteers, Habitat for Humanity Canada welcomed 131 new homeowner families during the year. WOMEN BUILD PROGRAM PROGRESSING As part of our growing Women Build program, affiliates in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and PEI completed seven Women Builds. 50 TH RESTORE CELEBRATED In October <strong>2006</strong>, we also celebrated the opening of the 50 th ReStore in Canada. This new ReStore, which is the first in the province of Quebec, is managed by Habitat for Humanity Montreal Southwest affiliate. ENGAGING YOUNG LEADERS In May <strong>2006</strong>, the first Canadian National Student Build launched in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For a two week period, students from across Canada worked together to build a home alongside the homeowner family, local volunteers and donors. The build was made possible through a partnership among Habitat for Humanity Canada, Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg, the National Youth Council, and generous donor The Richardson Foundation. CANADIAN LAUNCH OF THE GLOBAL VILLAGE PROGRAM The Global Village program launched successfully in Canada in <strong>2006</strong>. The program sent 588 people to join 51 Global Village teams that travelled to 13 countries to build homes. Participants had the opportunity to learn about other cultures by developing relationships with people in local communities. Working together, they built homes, built hope, and changed lives. WORLD URBAN FORUM III, VANCOUVER In <strong>2006</strong>, nearly 10,000 attendees from 160 nations gathered in Vancouver for the third session of the World Urban Forum, a biennial UN-HABITAT event focused on urban sustainability. Habitat for Humanity raised its international profile by hosting networking events that featured case studies of its activities from around the world. A special event showcased Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver’s ‘Burnaby Build’. During the Forum, in a highly visible location on-site, Habitat for Humanity volunteers constructed a house that was later partially disassembled and shipped to Louisiana as part of Operation Home Delivery. U.S.-CANADA SOFTWOOD LUMBER AGREEMENT In <strong>2006</strong>, Habitat for Humanity Canada, together with Habitat for Humanity International, led the way in securing a $100 million donation as a result of the U.S.-Canada softwood lumber dispute resolution. This significant donation, the largest contribution of its kind ever received by our organization, was made to Habitat for Humanity International for the purchase of lumber to support our homebuilding operations. HURRICANE RESPONSE IN LOUISIANA In 2005, hurricanes destroyed communities and ruined lives on the U.S. Gulf Coast. In response, Habitat for Humanity launched an emergency appeal for funds and volunteers to help families recover and rebuild. In <strong>2006</strong>, Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Louisiana received nearly $200,000 in contributions from Canadian donors. Nine Canadian Global Village teams comprising 83 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty in the rebuilding effort. Habitat for Humanity Canada also participated in Operation Home Delivery. Through its “House-in-a-Box” program, components for seven houses were prefabricated in Canada, then shipped to the Gulf Coast and assembled—with the help of Canadian volunteers. JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT IN INDIA The Habitat for Humanity IndiaBUILDS project is a five-year initiative that was launched in 2005 to provide new homes for 50,000 families in India by 2010. In <strong>2006</strong>, Habitat for Humanity Canada joined over 2,000 international volunteers—including 30 Canadians—at the Jimmy Carter Work Project in Lonavala, India. In only one week, numerous dedicated and hard-working teams helped to construct 100 new homes for families in need. A VALUABLE INTERNATIONAL BRAND Around the world, the Habitat for Humanity brand has gained significant awareness and influence. In <strong>2006</strong>, international brand consultancy Interbrand assessed the global brand value of Habitat for Humanity at U.S. $3.1 billion, 70% growth over the same assessment 17 conducted in 2002.
